Woken up after sleeping the wrong way, and had their necks in head splitting pain?

It happened to me today...If i turn my head to the right, it feels like death. Sort of like something inside, in the center of my neck is being stabbed.

Does anyone know a cure for this?!!??! or even some tips? It's happened to me before, but not this bad...

try stretching it a bit.... it will take 1-2 days to wear off lol.... I hate that.

I hate even more when I sleep on my arm wrong.. and I wake up and cannot move it. I have to move the arm with my other hand so the blood starts circulating again lol...

Usually it's my back I have problems with but I've had the exact same problem. It's not too bad until you're backing out of a parking space and turn your head around to check your blind spot (ouch).

Unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do. If you have a heating pad try using that on your neck for about 20 minutes every few hours. In addition aspirin at least helps the pain, or if you're not allergic to it I've used Vioxx (medicine specifically for muscle pains). It's not going to go away for about a week, particularly if it REALLY hurts right now... :(

It happens to me often because I toss and turn so much when I sleep. I've literally woken up the next morning to find that my comforter, bedspread and bedsheets are all on the floor and my head is resting sideways against the wall... oh_no

My father has Vioxx I think...I'll probly grab some from him sometime tonite. I remember taking it before, now that you mention it....but don't remember if it helped any :(

Regardless, I just did 10 pushups...and when I come up from them, the pain is completely gone. It comes back in under a minute....but at least I found a temp. cure...

I'm sure you can relate, that ANY PROGRESS in getting rid of the pain is worth it lol

I used to wake up with it every morning until the point i had enough.

The cure? I sleep on one pillow instead of two...and it worked!

all the time. I wind up sleeping in some odd posistion. Even if my neck is killing me, I crack the vertebrae by turning my head sharply left and right. Helps loosen my neck up.

I'm with Pilskin. I used to get that a lot too but then I started sleeping with one or no pillow.

That arm thing happens to me a bit too, pretty scary for the first half second.

I've only ever had it on my arms. I once woke where I'd done it to them BOTH, lying on top them. I had to roll off using my legs and kind of rub them with my head to try and get the blood to go back round them. It took about ten minutes to get out of bed and I missed my breakfast.

I woke up one morning and I couldn't straighten my neck out, and it hurt like hell on top of that. I spent the whole day with my head bent towards my right shoulder. I think I used an entire tube of Icy hot just to straighten it out.

one time I woke up with my arms asleep.

I know that a sketch comedy parodied this, but it did happen to me.

Hmm, thats probably not something you want to keep doing, at least not snapping your head so quickly. I used to do it that way, but then after awhile my fingers would tingle and I figured I should probably ease off before I do some kind of nerve damage to my spinal cord. I usually turn my head rather slowly until it simply won't go any farther, it still works just as well.

The cracking is actually just gas escaping from between the bones (at least that is what happens when you crack you knuckles). I have never heard of nerve damage occuring. My cousin has been cracking his neck and back for years. He has not run into any problems.

The noise caused by cracking your knuckles is actually the ligaments snapping in and out of the grooves of your knuckles [or other bones that you just happen to be cracking]

edit- never mind, you're right. i guess those kids shows were lying to me when i was little; or since then we've made significant advances in the field. that being, the field of knuckle-cracking.

the ligaments are stretched, but it is the gas escaping that makes the noise.

On the positive side, there is evidence of increased mobility in joints right after popping. When joints are manipulated, the Golgi tendon organs (a set of nerve endings involved in humans' motion sense) are stimulated and the muscles surrounding the joint are relaxed. This is part of the reason why people can feel "loose" and invigorated after leaving the chiropractor's office, where cavitation is induced as part of the treatment. Backs, knees, elbows and all other movable joints are subject to the same kind manipulation as knuckles are.

that explains why your neck feels more relaxed after you crack it.

Wow, finally I know that I'm right. Everybody always tells me I'll have back/neck/finger problems when I'm older. I've always said my back always feels BETTER after I crack it, they always see fit to tell me otherwise.

This one time when I was about 5...
I woke up after sleeping on my arm all night and I couldn't move my right hand at all, nor could I feel it. That had never happened to me before so what I thought had happened was that my arm had died.
I ran downstairs crying to my dad because I thought they were going to have to amputate my hand crying

once I woke up with my penis asleep, I couldn't move it at all! Also I've woken up several times with fuzzy hands. you know when you wake up with them under the pillow and can't move them for about 20 minutes.
