Wully here - with a topic that is guaranteed to start some shit.
I am an agnostic, I don't believe in the Christian God, but I don't believe that there isn't a god of some sort.
In short: I don't know.
What do you guys think?

I'm agnostic, myself.
I also don't believe that man should be so vain as to try to understand God (assuming there is one) or to tell other people what God wants or doesn't want them to do.
I dunno, I try to live my life being grateful for what I have, and...well..to me...a "sin" is when you do something wrong, and you know it's wrong...but you do it anyway. ;)

Catholic, but not practising. I goto a catholic school, we have masses and stuff, every 9th or so class is Religion. (aka a big fat waste of time. if that lesson was spent studying, we'd all get A's and be geniuses.)

i kinda became an athiest after i heard about a little thing called the spanish inquisition. that and dinosaurs. (yes, the bones were really put there by the DEVIL. whose the bright spark who thought up that?)

still i don't attend any particular religious functions outside of school. so i guess im not a practising catholic.

you don't strike me as a devout person yourself. :p

saa, let's drink pepsi, build an altar out of the empties, and worship the gawds of caffiene and PEPSI!
(domo arigatou, BioMotor_Unitron! you're a hell of an inspiration.) :)

if i don't go to hell for worshipping a non-alcoholic beverage, then fan-smegging-tastic.

I cannot believe you remembered that, Bufa! Yes, I will undoubtedly burn in Hell for building an altar to the Gawd Of Caffeine. I pay homage to him daily, hourly, heck, as long as there is some Pepsi or a suitable alternative within reach.

I was thinking about starting a topic like this myself. I have run the gamut of religions, and have been everything from a Wiccan to a hard core Bible-thumper. I have studied even more religions that I have practiced, and learned many interesting things in the process. Right now I probably qualify as a Christian.

Very good topic and thought provoking. As for me, I'm a Jesus Christ Christian. That's not anything really established (at least not to my knowledge), it's more of how I feel in my heart about God and religion. I was raised Baptist, but I haven't been to church in a little over 15 years, because I don't need somebody giving me their spin on the Bible when I'm perfectly capable of reading it myself.

When I say "Jesus Christ Christian", that is sort of saying that I prioritize what Christ taught above anything else in the Bible. For example, if the apostle Paul said "Judge your brothers" and Jesus said "Before you see the splinter in another man's eye, remove the beam from your own", I think I'll believe Christ first. Not only was Christ God in the flesh (I believe this anyway), but when you compare things He taught to other teachers, His makes the most sense.

I've run a pretty good gambit of studying other religions, and I don't think there's anything wrong in wanting to feed your mind on what's out there. You wouldn't believe some of the things I've read myself, and it would be enough to have some WWJD bracelet wearing person to tell me I'm going straight to hell. But you know what? I don't think it should be a matter of fear and retribution to worship God. If you hang out with somebody, you do it because you like them and/or respect them, not because you're afraid of them kicking your ass if you don't. So why should it be any different with God? If you love Him and respect the fact that He gave you life, and you love the fact that Jesus came to Earth to be the final sacrifice for your sins (thus ending the Jewish way of blood sacrifice), then and only then should you (in my opinion) worship God. Not because you got some Bible thumper convincing you that you'll go to hell if you don't believe the Bible the way he does.

Sorry if I sound like I'm preaching here. I love to talk religion though. Again, nice topic!

I'd consider myself christian, but not the type that believes you have to go to church to be a christian.

To me, religion is all about faith, honesty, piety, mercy, compassion, humility, nonjudgementalism and similar virtures. It is also a belief in a power greater than yourself.

It is not dogmatic.
It is not about how many people below to your church.
It is not about dressing up to go to church every sunday.
It is not about 1 religion is better than another.

I find value in all religions.

Probably the most interesting religions of all are cults, existentialists, and agnostics.

I don't put my beliefs fully in any of these "fringe" religions, but I believe they have a grain of truth to each of them.

All religions were a cult at one period or another.

Maybe God is dead? Who knows? Maybe humanity, past, present, and future, is collectively what we know as "God".

Maybe the agnostics are right... There is no way to empirically prove that God exists, so we don't know.

And then there are the satanists. According to a group of people who call them selves this in LA, "Satanists" are not devil worshippers, but worshippers of humanity. They essentially believe that people are animals. They believe we should live by instinct and give in to our desires, not deny them.
These guys interpret the stigma of satanism and give it a new meaning.

The point is: It is important to believe in something.

I am an Atheist.

I beleive in logic and human understanding.

Every logical part of my brain says that all of the worlds religions are pretty much the same:

They all base their beliefs on some sort of 'made up' spirit world.

They all derive from the basic human need to worship something greater than we are, and to give us purpose in our lives.

They all strive to answer existential questions that are more or less un-answerable.

They are all designed to control human behavior (This WAS needed for the advancement of human society, though..)

I don't reject spirituality out of hand or anything, but I DO reject the spiritual dogma of culturaly and technologically inferior human thinking.
