Castlevania - 2D or not 2D? That is the question!

3D incarnations of the series make me puke! Anyone else agree that the Castlevania series should ALWAYS stay 2D?

3D Castlevania just doesn't fly. 3D lacks the beauty of 2D, and in Castlevania, beauty is everything.

I find it odd that either companies think that the entire public has grown to hate things 2D, or that the mass market thinks that 2D means something bad.

When did this misconception start? Why can we not have both. Actually, I know for a fact that this whole thing was pretty much started by Sony America with their wholle anti 2D, RPG stance. If it were not for them, we would have had alot more 2D game greatness.

Think about it. if Sony America does not want 2D games, Japanese companies are forced to comply so thay will be able to release games in the profitable American market. It is really unfortunate that Sony did this to us. Sure, we got a few 2D games out of Sony's difficult approval process, but they were very few and far between.

This attitude gave us shit like Contra: legacy of War.

And sinse Nintendo made sure that 2D was a pain on the N64, we got Castlevania 64.

Castlevania should always be done with 2D sprites. Beautiful, crisp, high res, well animated sprites. I have not purchased the 64 Castlevanias and others should follow the same suit. Make sure anything that deviates from the proven success of 2D Castlevania be shunned.

I sound like a fucking Nazi. Oh well.

Yeah. Castlevania. 2D.

2D is tradition, 3D is renovation.
I admit that I love 2D Castlevania games and 3D is pale comparing it. I have no objection to 3D game even Castlevania except bad camera angles.
3D Castlevania isn't that bad.....I have no problem dealing with it or have migrain. One thing that any company should know is that you have to keep your quality if you go for 3D.

Contra is a bad example.

I think 3D disaster starts when Doom, Quake, and Hexen showing up on the store shelves.....

The 3D Castlevanias both rocked. I mean they were pretty much Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest done in 3D with MORE items. The misconeption that 2D is bad sucks, but the misconceptoin that 3D is bad is far worse amont hardcore gamers IMO. Even The Contra Adventure was a good, fun shooter, but it was dead before it was even released JUST because it was in 3D.

I would have liked the n64 castlevania more if it wasnt called castlevania. The game was decent but it cant compare with the 2d titles.

Haven't played much of the 3D castlevania, but what I did play I wasn't impressed with.

I think castlevania should stay 2D. If someone can come up with a decent 3D incarnation, I would gladly play it. Not all 3D games are bad. Game Designers and programmers just need to put gameplay and quality over graphics. They've had enough time by now to get it right, why don't they?

As far as Sony and the conspiracy of 3D goes.. Think about it -- Sony's hardware is 3D, the newest technology. Of course they are going to push 3D games. Making 2D games for their system(s) is a step "backwards" technologically. They basically forced the public into it.

Such is the case with technology. Progress is always confused with evolution. What ever happened to minimalism?! Whatever happened the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?"

Yeah, but Sony really forced it down peoples necks. From what I rememeber reading in magazines, it was quite the struggle to get games like MegaMan X4 and Castlevania out on the PSX. If it causes alot of hardship, companies are not going to want to risk wasting money on 2d development, and then finding out that they cannot release it because its not 3D like an Army Men game.

I think Sony changes its policy few years ago.
Otherwise we'll not see MegaMan series, Metal Slug X, Striker 1945, Klona and other games on PS platform.

Remember Sony was against RPG but now PS has most RPG market ........

3D Simon's Quest huh? That might explain a lot. Most people in my neck of the woods didn't like Simon's Quest because it strayed away from the original game play wise; though I love it. Maybe I'll give those 3D ones a try, if I feel like renting or purchasing a N64.

Definitely give them a chance. They're nice and difficult too. People bitched about some of the jumps being too difficult, but I didn't see the problem, I mean why do you think Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse was so difficult? People loved that one though.

If you're a huge fan of Castlevania I'd get both N64 games, if not I'd just get the newer one (Legacy of Darkness) even though I think it has less voice (which the original had an impressive amount of IMO). Legacy gives you two new characters to play as, after you beat the game with them you unlock the original two quests from the first game, they also changed around the locations of a LOT of the objectives and such in Legacy of Darkness.
