I just got a dreamcast today and I was wondering does the system always start on that screen that has the four options? even when you put a game in there before you turn it on? because when I try alpha3 it always goes to that screen to start up, even when I had it in there.

That means it's not reading the disc properly, as usually when you put a game inside, it will start straight away,

I don't think it's the game because the game only has a few scratches on it.

Then it could be the system itself, i.e. the lens.

First of all, you're sure you're not playing Jap games on US machine and vice versa right?

Look in the options menu at the start-up screen. The one where it asks you to input the time and such. There should be an option along the lines of quick start or something that skips the screen and goes straight to the game.

PS: The game is working right? It's just that you are sent to the menu first?

I'm pretty sure it's a us machine, and I know it's a us game. I don't want to go back where I got it because 1: it's too far
and 2: this dreamcast is mint, the best one I've ever seen and the best I could ever hope to get for what I paid. The menus are in english so I think it's a us machine. The date on the start-up screen said 1998, does it need an internal battery or something?

edit: but the game works fine I'm sure of that!

actualy I just tried it and auto-start was on. The sega logo appeared as in the beginning of the game, then it went to the menu. It seems as if it makes odd noises when it starts up such as chirping and stuff. Now I'm not sure if it's the game or not, but it's the only game I've got..

Turn your Dreamcast upside down.

Always works for me when a game gives me a hard time.

PS: About the clock...if you set the time and date now it shouldn't reset UNLESS you don't play on your Dreamcast for an extended period of time. I think the manual says it only needs to be on like 1 hour every 1-2 weeks or something? But I don't know, I've never really let my DC sit around long enough for it to reset except for a few exceptions. So in other words, don't worry about an internet battery or anything like that for this problem.

Dude, the very same thing happened to me. I sent my DC to sega for repairs. But, since sega isn't repairing them anymore...you might just wanna look for a new one. I know that seems kinda rash, but mine would go to the setup screen almost regularly and then sometimes it would actually get to the DC startup screen but it wouldn't read the disk all the way and I could hear the system having a hard time loading it.

Sorry to hear that man...it must from the first run of DCs.

=(

It plays after the start-up screen flawlessly, just it always goes up to the start-up screen first. Should that be a problem? also how do you tell if it's from the first run or not? It's used but it has not one speck of dirt or scratch on it.

edit: IT stopped reading after I tried turning it upside-down to play.

On the bottom on the DC is a label with the serial number and the date it was manufactured, unless it's been removed.

Sounds like the DC isn't doing too well. Maybe pick up another game and see if you have the same problem.

Sounds to me like the internal battery is dead.

There is a CR-2032 battery inside, like in the VMUs. Its right above the controller ports. It recharges while you play, and keeps the system BIOS settings constant while the unit is not powered on.

If you're not playing it very long, the batery wont get much of a charge. If you're unplugging it when you're done, you're losing your settings when the battery loses its charge.

Any system like this (PS2, Xbox, etc.) that has an OS will operate this way.

Leave it plugged in, and let it sit for an hour or two. Play it, and see where it goes from there.

if its the clock and date setup it goes directly to theres no problems with the lazer or game. its the internal memory

otherwise..i donno what the problem would be...but i guess if it works after that..it cant be that big of a problem :)

If you bought used like everybody else said it's the battery. It could be either dead or have been removed. I know of a import shop who did mods by takeing the battery out to imports. If the games play fine I wouldn't worry about it because you can still save to a VMU while the system is turned on.

is sega in california? because I just looked at the bottom of the dreamcast and it said april 2000. April is the month I was born in and it's the cleanest dreamcast I've ever seen so I'll probably keep it plugged in until I get out of school and take it from there. I got it for 30 dollars. And I could exchange it, but the other one looked like shit and I don't think if I did he would let me take the other one for like 10 more or something. I think they would have to return it so I wouldn't be able to swap cases.

Edit: Is is easy the screw together tightly? Because I was sondering if it would be difficult to work with like a gamegear. I want to check it out before I return it. I mean it's 30 dollars I can't even get most gba games I want for that, and I never owned a dc before

They are piss-easy to take to bits.
They're modular, so you can swap bits easy.

I'd take Jigen's advice. I had the same problem with my saturn when I first got it. The internal battery was dead and it really didn't matter how much I played on it - after like 3 years they need replacement. So just open it up, see what size battery you need, and go to the drug store and get a new one.

the battery has no binding on wether or not the game loads.

the problem is the lense is out of focus. it happens all the time.

and theres no such thing as a 'first run dreamcast' like with ps2's. sure there is a first run, but theyre no shittier or better than any other runs.

what you have to do is take apart your dc, and on the little thing that the lense is in, theres a little orange screw like thing, and thats the laser adjust. just tweak it till you find the 'sweet spot' and your games will boot like a charm.

i took pics for NeoGML a while ago, and they helped him fix the same problem.

Its not the battery that will loose its charge if its not pluged in for long. Keep it pluged in and it will recharge it self.
As far as start up goes. You have to turn the option on so it will automatically load the GDrom when the system is turned on rather than just showing the splash screen then going into the menu.

Goto Settings
then down to other
turn Auto Start "on"

I tried the auto-start up and it still went to the main screen. It even did when it actually loaded. I had my hand spread out over the lid on pushed down just a little and it seemed to work. I'm gonna try to adjust the laser right now.

EDIT:I can't figure out which knob to turn, or how I know when it's done...

before you start ripping apart your dc, let me ask you a question... it won't autoboot with EVERY game, or just SF03? did you try any other discs, like another game or the enclosed web browser?
