Taken from IGN.com:
"First up, the similarities. Aoki revealed that FF: CC features enemies, spells and story themes used in the Final Fantasy universe, along with a few characters such as Moogles and the same monsters. Aside from that, Square is taking the series in a new direction which strikes us as a bit of Phantasy Star Online and Secret of Mana.
As with PSO, FF: CC emphasizes multiplayer gameplay, although in this case gameplay is Offline with four players controlling the game through their individual controllers or Game Boy Advance units. You create a character from a set of character types, each with a number of variations. The game progresses with players defeating enemies and collecting keys to continue through locked areas.
From Aoki's comments, it seems that multiplayer is indeed being emphasized in this title. Attacking an enemy by yourself is fine and all, but it's better to team up against an enemy, and with proper timing you and your comrades can deal great damage. One example is in the use of an ice spell to freeze an enemy. Upon being frozen, another player comes in and strikes the enemy.
We're not sure at this point if the storyline of FF: CC will be as intricate as games in the main Final Fantasy series or as limited as in PSO. It has been revealed that town and event scenes will be in the game, although they weren't shown at the event, so we can't judge how robust they are.
Whatever the case, the background story that has been thus far revealed for the game works cleverly into actual gameplay. A party will always have an item called a "Crystal Cage" in its position. This item repels the effects of the death-inducing vapor that's covering the land, but its effects extend only so far. As you play, the border of a green-colored circle flashes off and on to make you aware of where the Crystal Cage loses effectiveness. Someone in your party must carry the Crystal Cage (carried over the character's head) as you advance through an area. Of course, when fighting enemies, the Crystal Cage can be placed on the ground so that all four players can do battle.
"
So its a multiplayer RPG...without online capabilities?
FUCK THAT
