Saw the Daredevil preview yesterday.
Kingpin is black in the movie.
Kingpin is not black in the comic.
If this isn't freaking racist, i don't know what is.

I don't think it's meant to be racist. If the best person for the part was black, then why should it matter? It's only a part in a movie, it's not like they're trying to tell us all black people are the heads of organized crime.

It is a big deal. They changed an aspect of the main villain. It would be just as bad as if they had made Magneto chinese in Xmen. Kingpin is a fat bald white guy. He was like that in the comics. And he was like that in the spiderman cartoon that ran a few years ago. They really fucked up this movie.

Meh, this is old news to me.

I think Michael Clarke Duncan (I think I got that right, hehe) would be a pretty good Kingpin.

Hey, let them complain about racism, all these little "insert group here" Power organizations are annoying as FUCK. Hell, if the Kingpin was white like in the comics, they'd say the movie isn't racially diverse, and would scream "RACISM!" at that too.

Fucking get over it.

It just pisses me off when these comic to movie translations don't even follow the original comic strip. Like in X Men, as far as I know, Wolverine never met rogue in canada. When she joined the Xmen she already had the power of flight and super strength. Yet, for the movie, they fucked with the story line. And Ice Man in the movie was a student. Ice Man was one of the members of the original Xmen team. He was a member long before wolverine.

They couldn't possibly make a movie exactly like a comic book. If you love the original to that degree, then just don't bother with the movie. Maybe they could make the movie more like the comics in some ways, but overall it's going to be different anyway, so they just change things to make it a better movie I guess.

Also, I don't see how this is racist... Could you explain? I thought the stereotype for organized crime was Italians, for one... I know that it might be annoying if he's not supposed to be black, but how is that RACIST?

Deal with it okay.
If you can turn The Green Lantern black why not the King Pin. You tell me who you think would be a better person than Michael Clarke Duncan, how about John Reese Davies wink

I just dont know why they would cast a black actor for the part of a criminal who was white.
Whether they know it or not, it affects peoples ideas, especially younger people.

Turning Green Lantern black is stupid, not racist.

There was a black Green Lantern years before the whole PC bullshit became stupidly rampant. Also, the (cookie cutter stereotype) persona they cast on him in the JLA cartoon is NOT AT ALL what the comic book version is like.

Also, there's this misconception about the Kingpin. He's NOT this big fatass in the comics. He's big and burly for sure but the guy is strong as a fucking bear and pretty agile for a man of his size. The odds of you finding a guy like this in real life to fill the role who has that look AND can act would be pretty damn slim. Sooo..instead of staying true to 30 some odd years of history which they can't do, they cast Michael Clarke Duncan in the role. I'm sure he'll do just fine as the Bling-Blingpin...err I mean the Kingpin :D .

Actually, Michael Clarke Duncan is prolly the biggest saving grace about the movie 'cuz the guy is a decent actor. I'm not the biggest Ben Affleck fan, but I don't despise as much as some do. Bullseye looks totally ass and Elektra doesn't look anything like her comic self (though I'm sure there'd be a ton of outcries from women's groups if she did look like the comic version :p ).

If they had gotten anybody else to play this guy, they could have probably gone with Vader. He's big, agile for a man his size, almost bald, and if you've ever seen him without his jockstrap... I mean mask, he just has the kind of look in his eyes that says "don't fuck with me." (He was in a couple of episodes of Boy Meets World--fuck me, Topanga was hotter than hell in the last few seasons drool_2 )

As for the whole controversy, it sort of reminds me of Wild Wild West, where they had Jim West played by Will Smith. I didn't think much about it then, and I don't think much about Michael Clarke Duncan now. The guy kicks ass anyway--he can play a gentle innocent or a cold-hearted general seamlessly, so he's aces in my book in any case.

duncan is a perfect kingpin, he's just not white. I really don't care, he looks just like the comic book kingpin, he's just black. He also sounds like I always thought he would.

There really isn't any good white people out right now to play kingpin.

I think its easier to construe your displeasure at the actor being black as racist. Its unreasonble to have a literal translation of ANYTHING to a movie. Regardless of that, Daredevil generally looks boring to me anyway.

the biggest shame is Ben Affleck playing Daredevil. nuff said.
lol

THANK YOU. I'm glad someone said it.

I know you can't make a movie like the comic 100% but damn, at least try. Elektra looks hot, but fucked up at the same time. They should've at least made an attempt to follow her original costume.

And for the Kingpin... I don't mind that he's now black, but isn't he supposed to be like huge?

Its not racist its just dumb. They changed a character. However Michael Clark Duncan does look like a Black Kingpin. You know who coulda played the part? Telly Savalas. That guy looks just like Kingpin, however he's dead :(

I hate when hollywood gets ahold of shit cuz they always gotta change it.

When KOF the movie comes out expect Iori to be Colombian and Kyo to be Moroccan.

It never occured to me until I read this post that Michael Clark Duncan playing the part of the King Pin would be racially motivated. In fact I don't think it occured to the casting agents either. Michael Clark Duncan is a perfect fit for King Pin who cares if he's black he's the best man for the job. spock Who would you rather have play King Pin Butter Bean??

Gee and here I thouht the trailer for that movie looked pretty good considering. Daredevil is one comic that wuold be hard to make into a movie but the trailers I have seen are ok by and large. We will just have to see how it is when it opens in the theatre.

This isn't anything new, Hollywood is always worried about leaving out minorities. Hell, Lucas had James Earl Jones voice over Vader because he was afraid of how the movie would be recieved with no black characters. Once Lando came in with Empire Strikes Back, we find out Vader is white. I would have prefered they keep things as close to the comics as they can as well, but I do understand that you can't tell a comic story in Hollywood with accuracy and interest. X-men may have got butchered up some, but the idea and theme of the comic was transfered over. Personally, I think Spider-man has been the best one yet, even though Parker didn't start with organic web slingers. They had Flash, Uncle Ben's "With great power.." line, all that jazz, and in the end he doesn't go for the girl, which I thought fit really well. But of course, Sam Raimi kicks ass.

You really suck if Kingpin being black is what you are letting put you off from this movie, as pretty much everything else but MCD look pretty bad. He is a good actor, and he was perfect for the part. It shouldn't really bother you too much, but people are going to continue bitching about it and hiding behind the "it's not true to the comics" shield... Who gives a shit, the movie is not going to be good anyway.

Besides, Kingpin is an old ass comic character. If he were made any time in the past decade or so you can bet dollars to donuts he'd be black, simply because he'd fit the "pimp" stereotype a lot better which didn't exist as much when he was created.

On the other hand if Kingpin was black in the original comics and was changed to a decent white actor who fit the part, I have the feeling that a lot less people would be bitching about it...

Who knows though, and who really gives a fuck?
