I know there are plenty of gamers out there besides me that LOVE the shooter genre. The problem is, do they Neo-Geo shooters generate enough interest to warrant their own Topic area? How about shooters in general?

Basically, I am proposing that we start this thread, and keep it on-topic to shooters only. I see lots of individual threads devoted to shooters that I would like to keep track of, but they get so scattered, it is impossible.

So, if you have shooter-related news, discussion, etc., post it here. I will put the link to this Thread in my Signature, so if you want to find it, just find a post by me.

For a starting discussion, why does GigaWing get dumped on so much? I hear people complain about there being no patterns inherent in the game, making it nearly impossible to dodge fire. I have found patterns, they are just not as obvious as you might find fighting a boss in RaiDen II.

People also complain about the graphics. True, CAPCOM could have done better, but was this not their first shmup on the DC? Give them a break! The gameplay is decent, and I like the game overall, from what I have played of it.

Discuss!

I enjoy the Giga Wing series. The graphics on GW1 were so-so, but damn nice compared to the Turbo-Duo shooters I still play. To me, graphics on a shooter is not key, game play and originality is. I love the bullet reflect capability in GW1.

GW2 is a tad bit too easy IMO. Its pretty as hell and the reflect lazer rocks, but too damn easy.

I think both are damn fun shooters, definately worth playing every now and then.

I have not yet had a chance to try GigaWing 2, yet. Chimpmeister says that the American version actually has BETTER cover art than the Japanese release, which is kind of a rarity.

I wanted to get the Japanese version for the character voices. The first time I heard "Reflector Laaaazer!!" with a female Japanese accent, I knew I had to get it. Unfortunately they took the voices out of the US one. I may try and find the Japanese version somewhere NCSX has been sold out forever...

I think that a shooter section would be cool, however, the problem with that is shooters seem to come out all near the same time and then don't see the light of day for like 4 months, this might cause problems in a forumn setting.

Shooter section is a good idea.
Shooting game is my all time favorite. GW1 is no good (I spent $60 on it and sold it for $3) but GW 2 truely shows that Capcom has redeem itself

Giga Wing 2 too easy? I found it to be a decent challenge.

Have you finished it on one credit with the standard amount of ships? If you can do that, then yes I'd say it's too easy.

I'm not that good, but I do jack the difficulty all the way up It's easier than I expected. Maybe it's because at the time I was playing Mars Matrix too and I just found it a lot easier. Maybe I should replace easy with short. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but I wanted more levels.

I wanted to check out GW2 and Mars Matrix; but I'm still playing the hell out of Gradius Gaiden. Maybe in the future...

I really don't understand why people dog the Giga series so much! Both of the games offer fast-paced arcade fun. Both games can be purchased for 20 bucks each. Both games are helping keep a dying game genre alive, the vertical scrolling shooter. Both of these games represent a time when arcade games only cost a quarter and were still fun. And as our good moderator pointed out, there are patterns. You just have to known have to use the reflect barrier or laser and drop a bomb from time to time. I can beat both games without having to continue once. Now granted, these games aren't hard but I don't think they were ever meant to be. They were designed as simple quarter munchers and fullfil their purpose quite well. I think that the main reason why people dog the Giga Wing series is that they have been spoiled. With games such as Pulstar, Blazing Star, Radiant Silvergun, Mars Matix, Lords of Thunder, and Silpheed (yah I know how you fucks feel about that game but piss off because I love it!) we've all gotten used to playing shooting masterpieces. Because of these great games every shooter that fails to meet their high standards is immediately discarded as trash. IMHO people should look at these shooters like the NFL to the XFL. The XFL was never meant to be something great, just simple junk food for the brain. I think it's the same way with these shooters. They weren't designed to be shooting legends. They're just simple video game junk food!

These are just the simple opinions of a simple idiot. Do not take them seriously!

No doubt that Capcom still support old school shooters but first GW isn't met the standard. If you have played shooters for years then you'll be really picky to gameplay, renovate idea, re-play value and other things. Only word I can say about GW is "sux". I lose my interest playing in first 5 min....

Well needless to say I love shooters!! Neo Geo shooters, while very good, are not the best out there mainly because they are all horizontal orientation, and IMHO the best shooters on the market are verticals. Stuff like Battle Garegga, Shienryu, Raiden Fighters/2/Jet, Battle Bakraid, Batsugun, Radiant Silvergun.

The DC seems to be the last refuge for old-style 2D shooters. Capcom should be given a HUGE amount of credit for this, we got 4 great shooters on the DC before the end.

Giga Wing is an excellent shooter, sure a bit pixelly and low-res, but the music rocks, the reflect force is cool, and the explosion sounds will blow you OUT OF YOUR CHAIR!!!

Giga Wing 2 is graphically much prettier than GW1, and is another really nice shooter. And yes, as Biomotor mentioned, the cover of GW2 for the U.S. release is MUCH better, IMO, than the Japanese version!! Don't believe me? Take a look:

Jap cover for GW2:
http://www.videogamedepot.com/pics/dc/gigawing2.jpg

U.S. Cover for GW2: http://www.videogamedepot.com/pics/dc/gigawing2us.gif

Now IMHO, I think the U.S. cover blows away the Jap one . . . who cares about characters on the cover, I'd rather see ships or explosions, something like that! Character "development" in a shooter is just a waste of time . . .

Also don't forget Mars Matrix (only $20 like GW2, brand new!) and Gunbird 2, both are great shooters for the DC as well.

As for the Neo, I still like quite a few of the shooters, like Last Resort, Alpha Mission 2 (great music!), Blazing Star, Strikers 1945 Plus, Viewpoint, Pulstar (too hard!!). I never cared much for the Aero Fighters games, the backgrounds are washed out and dull and the enemy ships are pretty dull as well. Neo shooters will never be vertical, because the system is exclusively a horizontal-based platform and doesn't run vertical games. Shame really, because the vertical shooters are the best ones out there . . . .

I have a question:

What do you guys think of Prehistoric Isle 2? I found it in a local arcade and play it every once and a while when I go to lunch. I am not too fond of it, although it's a decent lunch time waster(no other shooters available). I have only played 2 levels until I stop, how are the others? Does it get more interesting/difficult? I dont know, it's ok, maybe I'm missing something.

Thoughts?

Actually, I can do that every time! Is it too easy? No. You have to work at it, but once you get the hang of it, it is possible!

Man...shooters...man. I have played a lot of them as of late and the best two, in my opinion, in the last few years have been R Type Delta and Radiant Silvergun. Great games. That is all.

I think this is a great idea for a thread. Unfortunately, I can't join in on a lot of what you folks are talking about right now as I haven't played none of the Giga Wing games or anything else mentioned in detail so far. I'm just enjoying the shooters I have on the Turbo Duo and Neo Geo for the time being. However, I did pick up the game Wings of Wor for the Genesis about a week ago. I think it was called Gynoug in Japan. Anybody else get to play this? It's kinda' like a toned down version of Lords of Thunder with some nifty effects thrown in for good measure.

I dont understand that either.
I really like that game.

I love games that I can turn on, be into the action instantly. then flip off 20 minutes later.

I do not usually like "thinking" games.
So arcade games are my preference.
Gigawings is great, its fast action, good graphics, just top notch fun imo.

Holy shit! Did you hear that?! He said Lords of Thunder{/I] !!!!!

I was visiting one of my gamer buddies this weekend, and we found the Sega CD version of LoT at a nearby local game store. All I can say is DAMN!!! We took turns every other level passing the controller, trying to beat the game. Played it half the afternoon (the other half was wasted playing Project Justice). Didn't beat it, but came close! Too bad the gaming session ended with my friend (yes, you guessed it) throwing the controller...

Tough game, but man, it is fun.. Awesome music too !

Hell, those are fodder for discussion, Lou! I wanted to make this a mobile mini-forum for discussing all shooters, not just those on the Neo. We would run out of material too quick. I have a TurboGrafX-16, just no shooters for it yet.
