Why does everyone hate AOL?

I've had AOL for almost four years now and I just can't see why everyone seems to despise it. I used just about every other dial-up ISP such as MSN, AT&T, EarthLink, and CompuServe before getting AOL and neither one was faster or slower than the other. I decided to stick with AOL because of it's sheer number of options and great interface. So can anyone give me their honest opinion on why AOL is so damn hated? Or is it one of those "it's more mainstream so I hate it" kind of thing? Any intelligent responses would be greatly appreciated!

BTW: For any AOL users, the new 8.0 seems to be a lot smoother than the last version.

The basic answer is that due to AOL's extreme proliferation and "user-friendliness," everyone and his sister who owns a computer (and also happens to know absolutely nothing about it, technically) is using it to get online.

Consequently, it's pretty safe odds that any idiot you run across online (who happens to be from the US) will be using AOL. A good 50% chance, at least. By and large, AOL users, their chatrooms and everything else do little (if anything) to dispel the rumor that it's populated by semi-literate idiots and twistoids looking for cybersex.

"ne1 want 2 cyber? a/s/l?"

Most people who are well-versed in any technical aspects of their computer prefer to use an ISP that is less idiot-friendly and more idiot-proof. Not that that means much these days.

Working at a bank, I know that more people seem to have trouble with AOL's automated billing service than any other company.

You wouldn't believe the number of people we get calling because AOL never cancelled their service when requested, takes out 2 to 3 months worth of payments in advance, etc.

Also, they tried some kind of tactic of adding their service to our local phone bill, even though we never (and would never), sign up with them for any reason. We had to call one of their C/S reps to find out just what was going on. They never did give us a reason as to why we were suddenly billed for a service we don't even have; they just said that they would "take care of it", and that we could just ignore it.

We'll see...

AOL makes you more stupider.

Seriously though, whenever you see some half thought out ill expressed bad idea on a board you can bet the attached email address will be of the @aol.com variety. Its just becomes handy shorthand for idiocy, which isn't to say all aol users are sub normal, just enough to build a stereotype around.

most AOL users you spot are generally technical dipshits, and when you pay for AOL, you're not proving otherwise.

When I was in highschool, up until junior year when I started learning more about the internet and computers, I was quite satisfied with compuserve. But then you see that for substantailly less money you get everything those "isps" offer (I don't like to think of AOL as an ISP) and then without the mind numbing adds and UI. The worst are people that pay for AOL and then also pay for DSL from Verizon/BellSouth/PacBell. That's double penetration there.

Whatever. As long as you like the internet, eh. No more ghey bashing.

I still have AOL as a secondary ISP.(FREE)

AOL was my start up interface into the Internet, but it was "really" slow on my old computer.
AOL was so easy to use but was a pain when you needed to do anything that required speed.
Downloading music would take forever.

I would get kicked off a site because of AOL having problems.
And the phone line was always busy..
I just couldn't do anything with AOL.

Then I bought a top of line new computer and hooked up the AOL to it.
It was faster but still stunk...
Then I saw the offer for the Free Cable modem from Optimum Online but I was so used to AOL that I was a little weary about changing the ISP.

My mom and sister both have new computers and are using Cable or DSL.
The stuff they can do using those ISP's made me want a cable modem so bad..(It's so fast)

I asked AOL about the High Speed service they offer and they said that It's not offered in my area yet.(I live in the city)??
I don't understand why,so I said Fk them.

(But I haven't stopped the AOL service yet they let me use it for free for awhile).

Now I can do so,so much more with the Cable Modem.
Pictures load/sent so fast.
Music downloads real quick.

My sister in law and my Mother in law just switched over to cable from AOL and they are amazed over how fast the cable is.
I only pay $20.00 more a month but it's worth every penny.
I also work on this computer most of the day so I need speed..
To sum it up...
Cable or DSL is way FASTER than AOL..

I agree with this and Deuce's statements completely. Most of the reasons I hate AOL are that it attracts an incredibly stupid class of internet user (due to their "dumbing down" everything to do with the internet), their use of shitty proprietary software (why should I have to install some stupid retarded program to access the internet, like AOL 8.0? I should be able to just set up the dialup connection and then use IE to browse, or whatever I want for email and not AOL's crappy SW), their sending of MILLIONS of STUPID JUNK FREE AOL CDs in the mail, their intrusive pop-up advertising, the billing issues (which I've heard from many people), and their ridiculous retarded ads on TV. They're a ripoff, lousy service, they don't even give you a REAL connection to the internet, eveything is filtered through their lame servers. In short, they're the worst trash service out there, the lowest of the low, and if they were the last ones available I'd just forget using the internet at all. Yes, I hate them THAT much . . .

What got on my nerves was the fact that once I got rid of AOL they called me up like 123456789 times asking em to use their interface with my cable modem...I was like...Fuck no.

Damn AOL\Time Warner merger.

the devil is in corporations.

I second Chimp's statements, and would like to add that their customer service sucks as well. We were WAY overcharged, and it took absolutely forever (like several months, I believe)to fix the problem. Lots of personal time was invested to correct their stupidity. I hate AOL. Plus, Dion uses it.

Ever see their gay ass commericals with some white dude bobbing his head up and down trying to be hip, listening to MP3s? Ever see how GAY all these ppl look acting like AOL is the best thing since sliced bread? People generally HATE AOL because it's associated with mainstream ballyhoo and gayness of the highest order. While that might sound dumb, AOL is just too fuckin' politically correct for me and I only used them once during a time I had no other choice to get online with all the crap I get in the mail from time to time... I figured fuck it, let's see what's so good about em'. Well I found out, They suck donkey balls. And to top it off even though I'm on an indie ISP (Surfbest) I can no longer record my track CD information on REAL Jukebox using the online feature because now my computer wants to reload the AOL browser, but to do that I'd have to have my password activated to use my previous account with AOL. Fuckin' bullshit, so that's why I hate AOL... They're cock smoking, grab asstic, politcally correct, shit grinnin' sons of mother-less goats with gringos falling out of the sky!

i heard that AOL shut down the chat-rooms that people were using to talk about videogame piracy (which is good), but wouldn't shut down the chat rooms people were using to talk about child pornography. what the fuck is up with that?

AOL molested me when I was a young man.

I will never forgive him.

Plus he kills baby piglets and doesn't even cry about it.

Where to begin. OK, I had the misfortune of using AOL over the Christmas break. My parents still use that godawful service and I was stuck.

OK, I don't mind if it is slow, really, yeah it is annoying, but as long as it is steady and slow, it is ok. So why did I spend 12 hours downloading updates on her computer!?!

FREQUENT and CONSTANT DISCONNECTS. AOL would just drop me, sometimes I would be on for an hour, sometimes 2 mins. No reason. OK, so disconnects are part of the whole dial up world, they happen and it was Christmas, I knew the servers were busy and overloaded with people...

Problem number two arose, it usually took atleast 4 connection attempts to connect during busier parts of the day. I would dial in, handshake then hang at setting up the connection. Minute or two later, the modem tried again. This is rediculous, why is the modems failing authentication and network setup?

Also, when I say things were slow, I mean slow... Really slow, 800bps slow, which is rediculous. Half the time AOL would just give up trying to download pictures due to timeouts, or only download half of pages.

I worked for years in Internet Support, I actually have line tested kits at my parents house, I did some readings and found excellent quality lines, there were no spikes or excessive noise that would cause these problems. I worked at IBM Global Service for years and still know some back door accounts, sure enough I was in on a solid v.90 connection with no disconnects and a solid 3.2k/s transfer speed.

So what is happening with AOL? Just a guess, they are running horrible modems, ones that are not truly compatible with my parents modem, and probably built off of old rockwell standard FLEX technology that was flashed to v.90. Where as most providers use 3com (USR) v.everything modems which make much more reliable connections.

So there are the technical problems, on a user interface side, their program is a memory and resource hog, 8.0 takes up to much memory and is to intensive on weaker or low ram systems. Also, they have horrid browsing support, I guess they still believe their members stay inside the AOL bulletin board service mostly, which is a joke. Disconnecting is based on server calls, instead of a simple close modem command in DUN. They use their own TCP/IP stack that is not compatible with all software (including many updating products, like LiveUpdate which can have problems with AOL, though not always). They have generally poor email support, no advanced features like ad blocking, spam filtering, etc which would be epected of such a service. Parental controls are nice for families, but need to be setup, they are hardly effective on their own and in no way should be used as a way for unsupervised protection on the net.... I could go on and on, but why bother, they are a piss poor provider that could really care less about the consumer and are all about turning a buck ($23 or whatever they charage is a joke!)

If you have had good luck with them, good for you, you are in the minority and that is the reason they are so hated.

Oh and I must say, on non-weekend days at off hours, and at like 3 or 4 in the morning, they were perfectly fine. I could dial right in and be surfing right along. But peak hours, forget it. I could barely browse Neo-Geo.com.

That's the best thing you ever posted! Keep that stuff up!

Anyway, yeah AOL dial-up, like any dial-up, is a piece of shit. You're not getting anything special with it, either, as they pretend in their ads.

I think the main reasons people hate them are that they are way too mainstream, and their ads are ridiculous. "YOU GET EMAIL! EASY TO USE!" And they send you elborate CDs every now and then. It's really nothing special at all! Just another service! The ads are about as close to lying as they could be....
