Just bored, so I thought I'd put this up...
I would like to hear about your favorite picks for movies/directors. I just wanted to see if anyone here was familiar with some directors or movies that I have seen, and find out about other people's tastes in movies. It can be any kind of movie, from mainstream to cult to animation, its your pick.

My favorite bunch of movies/directors would have to be: (warning: this could be long!)

"El Topo", "The Holy Mountain", "Santa Sangre" and others by Alejandro Jodorowsky...
"Naked Lunch", "Scanners", "Videodrome", "Dead Ringers" by David Cronenberg...
"Wild at Heart", "Dune", "Blue Velvet", "Eraserhead", "Lost Highway", "Mulholland Drive" by David Lynch...
"Stalker", "Solaris", "Mirror" by Andrei Tarkovsky...
"8&1/2" and others by Frederico Fellini...
"Full Metal Jacket", "The Shining", "a Clockwork Orange", "2001: A Space Odyssey" and others by Stanley Kubrick...
"Repo Man", "Straight to Hell" by Alex Cox...
"Taxi Driver" by Scorcese...
"Happiness", "Storytelling" by Todd Solondez...
"PeeWee's Adventure", "Nightmare before Christmas", "Ed Wood", "Edward Scissorhands", "Batman", "Batman Returns" by Tim Burton...
"One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest"

& some random titles I've seen: "GhostDog", "Chronos", "The Hunger", "L'Humanite", "Funny Games", that movie by Luis Bunuel with the eye scene, "The Seventh Seal", "Dancer in the Dark", "Man Bites Dog", "Shallow Grave", "Mishima"...

Japanese animated films: "Grave of the Fireflies", "Jin-Roh", "Twilight of the Dark Master", "Kite", "Kimera", "Akira", "Perfect Blue", "Roujin-Z", "BlackJack", "Golgo 13:Queen Bee", "Ninja Scroll", "Darkside Blues"...

Whew! That's all I can think of right now, excluding television shows/series. That'll be for a different post... Btw, half of these titles are foreign movies. I like films from everywhere in the world!

And now...

Must...get...sleep... ARRRGH eek!

So I'll add favorite directors and my favorite selections by them, as I follow directors pretty religously as well;

Kubrick: Dr. Strangelove, Shining, EWS, Full Metal Jacket
Hitchcock: Rear Window, Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, Notorious
Coen Bros.: O'Brother, Fargo, Big Lebowski, Miller's Crossing
Kurosawa: Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, High and Low, Ran, Dreams
Gilliam: 12 Monkeys, Brazil, Fear&Loathing, MP & the Holy Grail
Burton: Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Vincent wink

I'd include James Cameron because I love T1, T2, and Aliens like nobody's buisness, but there's that Titanic thing in there. I've never seen it to this day, but he loses major cred just for wasting so much time and money on it.

For now, I'll just reply to what you listed.

David Cronenberg: Loved Existenz, Really Liked The Fly and Videodromes, didn't like Scanners and Naked Lunch, and Hated Dead Ringers.

David Lynch: Loved Blue Velvet, Liked Wild at Heart, didn't like Dune, Lost Highway was ehhh but had it moments, and no comment on Eraserhead...

Stanley Kubrick: Well pretty much loved everything so I wont list them.

Alex Cox: Liked Repo Man, didn't like Straight to Hell.

Todd Solondez: Love Happiness, really like Story telling.

Tim Burton: Also love every movie he makes.

And out of the random movies you've seen: Both One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Ghost Dog Rule. And I didn't really like Man Bites Dog, but that doesn't count because I didnt see the whole thing.

I'll post more of my Favorites later when I'm bored, but it'll include John Carpenter, Spike Jonze, ect..

Go here for a damn good site. It should start up again and get totally revamped any week now. Depending on the laziness of my friend. It even has an Interview with Joe Carnahan before he became famous.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Terry Gilliam..."Brazil","Baron Von Munchasen" and "Monty Python" movies are what I liked. He's somewhat obsessed with the British, I think? I just know he went ex-Pat... But a cool director nonetheless.

I totally agree with you on Cameron, he used to make really great movies like "Abyss", the "Predator" series and "Alien" until he went into box office smash mode. Its the same with Spielberg, his debut movies didn't rake in the huge $$$ like nowadays, but they were a helluva lot more darker and provocative than, say "ET" or "Jurassic Park". But I did like his war movies, they were good.

And lets not forget about Ridley Scott... :(

I guess because of this I tend to gravitate towards the more obscure and less conventional movies, the "cult" or whatever its called.

H A C K E R S

That's pretty much all I watch. It's always playing in my DVD player (on 24 hours a day) I just turn on the TV when I want to watch it.

Other than that I like pretty much all Tom Cruise flicks:

Top Gun
Mission Impossible (2 was better than 1 no matter what anyone says)
Jerry McGuire
Vanilla Sky
Pretty much all the others

Then I like the usual stuff:

Good Will Hunting
Pulp Fiction
H A C K E R S
BLOW
Cruel Intentions
Office Space
Zoolander (<----Pimp Shit)
H A C K E R S
Braveheart
The Matrix
H A C K E R S

And classics such as Caddyshack and Christmas Story r cool. :D

I actually watched Naked Lunch after I finished the novel by William S. Burroughs. It was pretty scary stuff... But I still like the movie, because I never expected it to be made in the first place. eek! Whenever they make movies based on novels they always summarize the story and omit details, which I hate. Just look at "American Psycho" or "Forest Gump".

Heh, and Spike Jonze... Who knew the Beastie Boy video director could make such funny movies? :D

And thanks for the link, will be sure to check it out! Heres one of mine: www.mrcranky.com
Its probably well known but it is funny as hell, I go there to check about new movies all the time.

Jeebus, look how long this post goes... eek! Please, no more replying with quotes, ok?
No, I don't dislike those movies... I think they're really great, its just the detail omission I don't like. Of course, the movies would be twice as long with all the details put in, but I wouldn't mind. I guess its coz I'm used to reading novels. I'm a story purist. That's all... :)
