(Not sure if this should be WarRoom material as its a bit 'ranty'. But here goers anyway)

Everyone I know with a PS2 has had it chipped to play pirated games
Everyone I know with an Xbox has had it chipped to play pirated games
Everyone I know who plays PC games downloads Warez by the shedload.

Except me.
The most I have is a switched GCN for imports, all my other consoles are as they were when I bought them. I never buy/use pirated games unless there is no other way to play them (IE out of stock wherever I look), and I never Download DivX movies - always buy the DVD when it comes out.
I'm assuming that everyone here also hates piracy as we know how it affects SNK, but I was wondering how many of your friends/workmates use pirated stuff and what they think of you for spending the extra cash on the real thing. And are you ever tempted to stop buying official products and go for the pirate stuff, as it seems so easy nowardays to aquire it?

It just seems that lately, people who actually believe in supporting the entertainment industry are becoming rarer and rarer.
Or am I just unlucky to know so many thieving w&nkers?

Your thoughts?

I don't even talk about the provenenance of my work collegues games and films any more as I know they are largely stolen. Happily none of my friends steal games, I don't think I have any pirated games at all.

Thankfully all my friends buy the original music cd's/games/ and dvd's.

It's not like i have anything better to spend my money on, and i can always sell it on if i don't like it - which brings to the question - what DO your friends spend their money on?

I actually ddin't want to risk modding my Xbox, so i sold my uk model, and bought a USA xbox from ebay just to play imports.

The only modded consoles i have is a chipped PSX to play jap and american games , and a 50/60hz switched saturn so i can play all region games full screen.

Plisken, most of my friends are more PC gamers than console gamers. The money they save on not buying games/films/music they spend on.......

Buying more PC's!?!

One friend has 3 PC's, and another is going to buy a second one. Not that there is anything wrong with the ones they have (2ghz Geforce 4's), I think they just like PC's.... a lot.

Frankly I think its wierder than me having 2 GameCubes (one PAL, one NTSC switched). I never did 'get' PC-only gamers.

Well it took some convincing but none of my friends play pirated mainstream PC or console games anymore. Unfortunately most of them are now afflicted with another disease...

Actually, I've often felt like one of an 'immoral minority'.

But not in the matters of game, nope.

Never bought nor played an unoriginal game. Not even one, really.

i also have a Jap 'switched' Gamecube but i also own a chipped Xbox (no ps2 here)

i got a chipped xbox for the following reasons

1/ to play import games
2/ the watch dvd's without the extra xost of the controller
3/ to watch multi-region dvds
4/ for teh romzzzzzzzzzzzz

number 4 is probably the main reason - the snes emu is fantastic and the genesis one is just around the corner

i can get copied games if i wanted @ the glasgow barrowlands and to be brutally honest i did have a couple - to try out all the functions on the chip)

and to be brutally honest i spend all my money on my AES / CD stuff - so i wanted to see what halo looked like and a couple of others

but as one member can state i also buy originals

(this is were plisken chips in and says yes he does he bought an Xbox game from me)

i played Shenmue years ago - so i didnt get it for the Xbox, so i have plenty of time on my hands

how do you know how many koffins you have left???? - maybe missng something here

i have all characters except 1 and i reckon i know where he is (6600 platinum kredits)

i have mainly been playing the konquest and i have done around 130 of them

btw Cyrax's konquest kombo is a fucking pain - you need the dexterity of dhalsim to complete it and it would be totally impossible in an actual game

checked out kenshi's fatality yet??????

still makes me laugh

its a very good game and i am glad they released another Mk - this game is actually pretty good and the fatalities wont sell teh game like the others

:) :) :) :)

I've got Shenmue II on the dreamcast and xbox- it's one of my fave games of all time so i don;t mind playing it through again (this is my 4th time through, though it will be the first time i will see fangmei's birthday event) love taking photo's ont he box version too.

kenshi's fatality is tops yeah, the exploding eyes is a great touch. unlocked raiden yesterday and am well pleased with him - he looks just like his lords of death counterpart, lightning and all :D

about knowing how many koffins left, there 26 x26 rows - total of 676. you'll notice when you buy a coffin the gold letters turn gray: just keep a note of how many are gray. there's even a space int he manual for you to cross out the koffins you've bought, though i don;t use it as i don;t want to deface it. You'd know this, if you were playing the ORIGINAL game, right? RIGHT??? !!

feck counting

i think i have unlocked around half of them

play the konquest as you get tons of kredits and its actually pretty easy

apart from mission 9/10 - its always a kombo fest of un-precidented proportions

and i thought aof2 was difficult

Cyrax's fatality is pretty golden as well

On this note I'm always in a catch 22. I don't buy boots of NEO games or any video game for that matter... but on the music front I sometimes do just have someone burn a copy, not often however since I'm not that much into music and I still prefer the real thing. My confliction isn't with whether I should or not, because 9 times out of 10 the answer is REAL DEAL ONLY... my dilemma is with why I'd want to not support something real. To me when it comes to non-gaming related issues, I just feel that with everything the corporations do today, they don't give a flying fuck about anyone really... do you really think SONY cares that your brand loyal? NOPE! Thus sometimes I'm tempted to be more *Guerrilla* and do thinks with all the gusto of Flavor Flav shouting "FIGHT THE POWER!" but in the end I almost always do end up supporting the goddamned corporate overlords because I hate a second rate product. On gaming however, I will never buy anything but the real thing. Emulation like MAME however I see as justified since I use it to test out games, then track down the PCBs of the one's I like.

Ditto, the only thing is that I dislike
anything unoriginal.

That includes:
Napster
warez
romz
all kinds of illegal stuff.

Well, I paid for my copies of windows and outdated version of photoshop, and I own no pirated games/applications. I used to do that shit all the time when I was a kid, but now it's more a matter of time than money. If a product isn't worth my money is sure as fuck isn't worth my time. Thankfully most of my friends agree for the most part, and we admonish the couple that walk around with their divx "collection" binders. They need to stop spending two hours trying to track down half-broken movies on kazaa, get a job and work so that they can legitimately own the things they enjoy. However, I think I'm the only one in my circle that actually owns the cd for every mp3 on my pc (I rip my cds after buying them, portable mp3 players rock) and I do give my friends shit over that and they attempt to rationalize it in some manner. "Oh, the money won't go to the original creator anyway." "I don't like it that much." "They should have had better copy protection." "I just want to share my love of it with others." Those are totally invalid points. It's flat out theft. Just recognize that you are a thieving whore and cut the crap. :D

I work for a living, and I like to support others that do the same.

Only difference is they work - same job as me - so they CAN afford the originals.

Heh, as you can tell, knowing so many people who are into piracy really gets on my nerves.
