I was at a protest today in Glasgow Scotland about the whole war on Iraq thing, I heard that many places in the world had them today, something in the region of 400 cities and towns.
In Glasgow it was said that 90,000 people turned up all in one cause, quite amazing for me to think about, I was just wondering if any of you's had anti-campains near you or if you have any feeling about the war on Iraq in general?

I'm always glad to hear that people who are getting involved in politics (no matter what side of the board), but I'm going to move this one to Unrelated (where more people will pick up on it).

I didn't expect him to address the crowd, he'd have been shouted down. I did expect him to allow PA systems so the speakers could address the crowd and to make his speech to the conference at the advertised time and not flee the city before the march even started.

Fun though, yeah.

Now that it's moved, I've heard that millions worldwide have gather to protest the threat of war.

I'm actually wishy-washy on the actual need for war (I'll probably make a separate post about my position); but outside of the actual issue, it's great to see people actually giving a damn about something again.

But I'm definitely checking the paper (NY Times) tommorrow (Sunday). There will be great coverage. I was listening to the radio on this afternoon and they were saying its the biggest mass protest since Nam...

I know what you mean Bobak. I'm hugely anti Sadam, but I don't think enough things have been tried yet or enough of the post conquest scenario defined to risk so many thousands of lives in a war, so I march.

2 million in London they reckon. Biggest protest in British history. I don't think any government can ignore that.

Yeah, but Mr Blair leaving before the protest was fully underway seemed to make him look a bit bid bad on his behalf.
As for protests it's been a mad day everywhere worldwide, it's amazing to think that so many people could get up and give a toss about something in this world.

Yes I was in london with 1.2 million others.Every strata of society was represented from England up to wales, ireland and scotland. Its what makes the UK a home of free thinkers. We arent so easily manipulated as a people, even though in Tony Blair we have a vain, and scheming actor for a prime minister

In contrast people in a country like Egypt or Turkey have their voices suppressed whatever their creed be it islam or anarchy or socialism.

The corrupt and unislamic regimes of those countries wont allow any voice of demonstation thats why true islam is repressed. Its to do with the governments in those countries and how they control people with violence.

Thats why today while Europe spoke, the middle east remained silent.

Why are you against the war?

I guess I just don't understand it...The war isn't about oil...We've already promised the french and germans that they will still have their contracts w/ the iraqi companys...it isn't about power, as the USA is already powerful...So to me it's about protecting the world's best interests. Saddam kills his own people...if you watched the thing on 20/20 last night about his son, you'd see that he is as crazy as saddam...

Iraq is the only country that has a jail for it's Olympic members that do poor...They are the only country that tortures poorly performing atheletes...

The people live in fear of saddams son, who is a madman, murderer, and rapist...

I guess, when I look at Iraq, I see a country that can only be improved. Yes, some people will die in the war, but there are some things that are worth fighting for - namely the defense of human rights.

Saddam = fanatical dictator that brutalizes and kills his own people.

I don't see how it could get any worse.

Please don't confuse being against the war with being pro Saddam. Its possible to be against both.

Some people are just against war till every other possible thing has failed, and they don't believe that we are at that point. There are still things to try.

There are tens or hundreds of thousands that will die if there is a war. Real people, real widows, real orphans. War should never be used because its expedient.

Anyway, can we leave this as a discussion of the marches rather than a pro/anti war discussion?

umm..okay fine. I was just trying to understand your side. And btw, tens of thousands won't die - we could go in, and be done in two days - the iraqi citizens don't support saddam, and that place would fold up like a cardboard box.

Yeah, great to see many people into protesting for the people of my country. I have to say, from my heart, I have been deeply moved today, and would like to give a shout out to EVERYONE who sacrificed the day for the cause, with much thanks!

What a day, great speakers, can be seen on sky active it keeps repeating if you have that feature on your tv.
Moving stuff. Who was your favourite speaker? I have to say, Ken Livingstone gets my medal.

"Ohhh Mr.Bush who had to get DADDY to get him out of the National Service because he didnt want to serve in the army himself, a man whose in it for the oil....and the country which has the most mass destructive weapons in the world, and its not fair to protest for one country, what about palestine? the isrealis have weapons of mass destruction too, they are using DOUBLE STANDARDS"

That summed it all up. Im gonna go check out this other thread regarding that human version of pinoccio....the isreali...lol

Believe me, all the bad is true and i could guarantee NO ONE on this board would have saddam over for tea, unless it was spiked!
You see, america has snipers. if it really wanted to kill him, it would have done yesterday. Theres no need for the whole theatrical war. I have family and buildings there that would be destroyed and killed if this was commenced. In the name of a quick buck.

We all agree, he's a looney, but the people are of the smartest ON EARTH. Any educated man can tell you that. The country is rich in resources, rich in brains (at least the pre-saddam generation) and just need good a ruler. Like a home cart without the power adaptor. wink

I'd be delighted to tell you why I'm against the war in detail, pm me your email and I'll fire you a couple of hundred words in a nice friendly way. I really don't want to get involved in another flame thread though, sorry.

Who needs war?In 1990,there was a more valid reason to wage war against Iraq, because they invaded neighboring Kuwait. This time around,I think it's just for the sake of oil interest.

And why shouldn't I believe my president? If you think it's about oil, you're simply misguided-we have more oil in texas, alaska, and california than all the middle east combined. The reason we HAVEN'T gone in yet IS because of oil - the french and germans get too much of their oil from iraq, and are afraid the stream of illegal gasoline will be turned off.

they wouldn't...its called appeasement, something the europeans should know all about (see:hitler). we were also guilty of looking the other way, but we can't let it happen again.
