N. Korean Rocket Reportedly Can Hit U.S.
By JOHN J. LUMPKIN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - North Korea (news - web sites) has an untested ballistic missile capable of reaching the western United States, intelligence officials said Wednesday.

The North Korean missile is a three-stage version of the Taepo Dong 2, said Vice Adm. Lowell Jacoby, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

It has not been flight-tested, Jacoby said, leaving some questions about the North Korea's capability to successfully launch the missile.

CIA Director George J. Tenet, who joined Jacoby in briefing the Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites), also acknowledged the North Koreans have the capability to reach the western United States with a long-range missile.

Previous U.S. intelligence reports have said such a missile probably could carry a nuclear weapon-sized payload across the Pacific Ocean.

Why not put a warhead in a 747 and fly it over, and crash it in LAX?

Seems like the most logical approach to delivering a nuclear threat to the US.

Where would they take off from? Seoul. Seoul is, to a large entent, an ally of the US, but I wouldn't put it past the people in that area to allow something like this to begin from their own side fo the fence.

How long would such a missle take to arrive?

I'm sure the US Army has the technology to shoot it in the air should it ever (read: never) be launched.

Though launching a missle with nuclear innards would cause damage no matter what you do with it after its launched.

Obviously they will aim for San Francisco since it's the largest metropolitan area on the West Coast within their reach. sigh...

If not SF, then definitely Seattle.

As for shooting it down, patriots aren't as accurate as they seem.

1.) I'd never get launched at us, they be signing their own death warrant if they did.

2.) Ever wonder why Bush wants a Missile Defense system? And yes initial tests of the prototype systems have been very successful.

They can get as many warheads as they want, they're not gonna touch us so long as we stay the soul Super Power in the world. The only real major threat we have to worry about is Terrorism, they can attack us and we won't have an area to justifiably wipe off the map.

lets just say this.. the fallout would be nasty for the whole world if it was shot in the air...
it would be rather terrible... unless we got it before it re-entered the earth's atmosphere (considering that it does leave the atmosphere).

There are people who just don't care. You push them to the brink, and they will push back. Pyongyang has already described US military escalation as an attempt "to crush us to death." Nuclear weapons are no longer tools of deterrence.

To get himself out of the mess he's made? smirk

People didn't think 9/11 could happen. Unfortunately, this is the most dangerous time since the Cuban Missile Crisis and the only thing Bush can do is allow Saudi Arabia and the rest of the middle east to control their oil flow without restriction. As long as US interests in other countries lie on the basis of economic well-being of US companies, we're the prime target.

Agreed.

I sat down for a short lecture/Q&A with a British diplomat yesterday evening (he espoused nearly the same line as Pres. Bush), and an audience member asked "Why Iraq instead of NK?"

The response was interesting:
[roughly summarized] Some (i.e. US/UK) realize the immediate danger posed by Saddam; from his willingness to use chemicial weapons in the past to his desire to the plain fact that the US/UK are the #1 and 2 targets for any Iraqi terrorist strike.

I thought it was solid reasoning, however, he downplayed NK based on its inability to attack anyone. Now this seems to be moot (as of this afternoon) and I wish I could get his opinion with that in mind.

He also noted that Saddam appears to be crazier and more desperate. I dunno about that one.

The North Koreans would be foolish to strike at us with Nuclear weapons.

They could never bring themselves to destroy a population that owns so very many delicious dogs.

Terriers, golden retreivers, basset hounds, labs....

Nah- they're too hungry for that :)

I just think it's really weird how Bush is going for Iraq when North Korea has all but fired a weapon....I meen, lets see...

How many times has iraq said the've had weapons of mass destruction? none.

How many times has iraq used weapons of mass destruction on other people? that could be debated...

How about North Korea?

Who has come out and just said that they have weapons of mass destruction? NORTH KOREA!!!

When you look at the month or so...we've heard more about weapons of mass destruction from korea than from any other place on the globe...but, the media seems to downplay it?

Sometimes....just sometimes its a little obvious why bush wants this war with iraq...

greedy motherfucker

I can only begin to imagine what would happen if NK launched a strike against the west coast. If this happened then i predict North Korea will be instantly turned into the planets largest crater.

But seriously that is disturbing news. Think of the other Nations NK could hit. I don't doubt they would blow up our allies just to piss us off. I think attacking the United States allies just to get at the US is just as bad, if not worse, as attacking the united states.

I don't think there is going to be any sort of "war" against iraq. Sure we might oust Saddam but if any fighting occurs im sure it will be against NK. Although i hope both situations can be resolved somewhat peacefully.

These are scary times.

I have a very very long memory. I remember being 5-6 year old in the early 80;s .I remember as a kid watching TV clips of soviet Russia and being in awe of this place. There was a phase in the early-mid eighties post Brezhnev- pre Gorbachov where the Soviet leader would die every 6 months and there would be huge miiltary processions at the funeral.Soviet Russia seemed another planet.
Eventually I visited Moscow as a schoolboy in 1991.

Recently we have seen simaler footage of Korean military parades and shows of strength. That place seems like no other on earth.Who knows where their leader will take them.Much the same can be said of Bush and Saddam

Jesus Christ, this is really messed up. The Nuclear contamination is what I fear most.

The West coast is such a large and important area for the US. So much trade, commerce and other industries are there. The effects would be horrifying.
