Do your self a favor

Buy an extra xbox to mod.

if you have a Mod chip you can't go live.

You'll need 2 xboxes if you want to mod.

1 for the EMU shit. 1 for regular gaming.

The only thing I know about X-Box modchips is that you can't go online with it after the modchips installed...or something like that... :(

Here's my question (I'm in the same boat as you - looking to buy one)... Do I *need* to buy a new hard drive to use MAME or transfer my XBox games to the hard drive?

Shadowland had one at the MN get-together - he had a new 100+ GB hard drive installed in his. I *assumed* that the native hard drive has some kind of protection against moving these sorts of files onto it and running them... unless that's what the mod-chip bypasses. I guess I haven't heard of anybody playing MAME from a CD...

Nick, you can use your current HDD.

No need for a bigger HDD. ;)

pyrokilla,

X-ecuter 2 is a newer version. I wanted to get it also.

You can add a switch to turn off chip for online.

Let me know how is the Matrix.

Really? Sweet - that makes it much more affordable. Thanks for the info!

Pyrokilla - let me know how your mod turns out. There's a few guys I know (and me, of course) who want to do this mod but want to make sure we don't get the wrong chip (or a chip without a switch so we can still play online).

I have the Matrix chip...one screw, no soldering needed.

You cannot load emu's from a CD-R directly to the XBOX HDD, you can play off the CD though.

If you switch to a bigger HDD you can still go online with just one XBOX thanks to a new software program that locks/unlocks your HDD, but it would require you to remove the chip everytime you decide to go LIVE.

The question of if you can just use the standard HDD that comes with the XBOX to play emu's I cannot answer. I'm fortunate to have more than a few friends that keep me updated on the moding/hacking of the XBOX and handle any questions I may have...I'll ask about this :)

Look at this...

Project Dreamix Dreamix will turn the Microsoft Xbox into the ultimate home entertainment center.

Right now we are in the alpha phase of course, but below is what we plan to complete before Beta release: - PVR Features (Scheduled recording, fast forward, rewind, pause Live TV) - Video Playback (Based on Linux MPlayer - all popular file formats) - Audio/Music Playback (Based on Linux MPlayer - all popular file formats) - Image Viewer (Slideshow + Photo album) - Setup Menu (All configuration will be done with the Xbox controller and/or DVD Remote with the use of a graphical keypad)

Although Dreamix will be based on Debian Xbox-Linux, all necessary libraries will be included in the distribution of the CD image and will auto-excecute upon being inserted into the Xbox DVD drive. This will allow for a friendly install by the average user.

Just though I'd throw this out there as a small example of what the mod chip will do for you. I hope this happens...it'll be interesting... :)
