i just got all new pc parts and im building my pc.

i got an asus A7N266-VM mobo, an athlon xp 1600+ and 256 crucial ddr 133 ram.

NOW. the problem is it wont recognize ANYTHING on the 1st IDE chain. I've tried my old maxtor 40gb drive, and my new (i just bought it less than an hour ago) western digital 40gb drive.

it wont recognize ANYTHING at all, it doesnt even hang trying to auto detect the drives.

but when i use my old, or even the maxtor hdd's (the old one is udma33) on the second ide chain, they work, but i cant boot windows XP like that, which sucks ass.

Sounds like the channel is dead. Try a brand new cable. If that still doenst work check the ASUS website. There might be a compatability problem or a new BIO flash. You might have gotten a bad board though. Hope you can exchange it.

I would start by checking all your bios settings. If you have, don't flame me, I'm only trying to help.

I know this sounds stupid, but when I was working on my Athlon XP 1800 setup I had the cable to the hard drive on upside down . . . it took me a long time to figure that one out. Longer than it should have . . . <img src="graemlins/help.gif" border="0" alt="[Help]" />

well, it turns out that i didnt have the mobo mounted correctly, so it was hitting the case, and must have been shorting the ide channel.

luckily, i put it together RIGHT and now it works perfectly. im using it right now.

I thought all IDE cables and connectors (be it on CD Drives/HDD/Zip Drives/ETC...) were slotted now so that this wouldn't happen? If you managed to put a slotted IDE cable on a slotted IDE HDD connector, you are the man!

Man, have you ever tried the jumper settings on your HD ?

Maybe your BIOS have the primary channel disabled or something...

Asus MOBO's BIOS are the best, if it aint booting, the MOBO must be pretty fucked up.

And about that "I can't boot WinXP", you can even boot it if the drive is in the Secondary Slave position.

You just have to go to the menu in the Asus BIOS and choose the following HDD to be the first bootable device. will work. ;)

i, um, fixed it.

but XP will not boot if it is on a secondary IDE chain. master or slave, unless its on the primary it needs some boot disk.

and it wasnt the jumpers, no matter how i set it, it wouldnt work. it was just being shorted out i think because i mounted the thing wrong, but now its all good.

And don't you forget it!

Actually the Hard Drive was 2 years old or so, so the IDE cable fit either way
