I'm pretty bored right now since there's not much to do, but I started this after a rousing evening of 007 Nightfire last night.

Bond games have always been great M/P games on N64 and even AUF had a great M/P mode. Nightfire, though, is incredible and although not my favorite (Halo system link still reigns supreme), it's my next choice right now.

The Bots are very intelligent and strategic. The weapons and environments are also first-rate and no slowdown with two players and four bots (I'm playing the Gamecube version).

I ws hoping Unreal Championship would be good, but the framerate hurts it a lot.

List which one's are yours, preferably console since I can't relate to PC gamers.

Serious Sam on the Xbox has a great 4-Player Deathmatch mode. Other 4 player console faves include:

Perfect Dark (n64)
Halo (xbox)
quake 3 arena (dreamcast)
Medal Of Honor Frontline (xbox/ps2/cube)

(i only put 4 players because i think 2 player deathmacth is very boring).

i suggest you avoid Timesplitters 2, god knows why that game got such good reviews, it's total bollocks.

This is exactly why I can't relate.

Online is irrelevant to me. I prefer sitting next to my opponent, not trash talking my 17" monitor.

Control may be better, but I don't miss it. And I loved Allied Assault.

I forgot about Serious Sam. I've heard spectacular things about this game, even though reviews were lukewarm.

I also agree about Timesplitters 2. One of the worst FPS games I've EVER played. A shotgun in close range kills in one shot, not seven. What an overhyped peice of turd. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

I don't talk trash to my monitor, instead I just kill people.

It's much more fun playing against 20 other people, even if they're not in the same room, than only 2 or 3 others, IMO.

Also, I just cannot for the life of me, play a FPS with a controller. Just can't do it.

Halo allows me to play with 16 players. Not quite 20, but all in the room.

But if the controller is the issue, then that's a different topic entirely.

It's the reason why I stated that console FPS players need only apply.

I used to think that certain systems [console or PC] could handle certain games better. for instance, that PC's clearly defeated consoles in terms of FPS'.

Halo completely shattered that illusion, by proving to be the best single and multiplayer FPS ever created.

Halo owns the console FPS category lock, stock, and barrel. The PC FPS gamers can hate all they want, they're simply bitter about the game arriving on the XBox first thanks to MS's buyout of Bungie. I'm thankful they did, 'cause I've had a hell of a lot of fun playing Halo over link-up on the 'Box. The others have said it here, and its true...nothing beats being able to see and taunt live opponents in the same room. The only game that will beat Halo is Halo 2.

How come no-one's mentioned Outtrigger yet?

Might not have quite the depth and variety of arenas/weapons as Quake 3 and Unreal, but you cant beat it for the 'dive in and start blasting' factor.

And heres me thinking everyone here was a die-hard Sega fan.... :p

For consoles, Golden Eye and Duke Nukem for N64 probably rank as my favorite FPS I have played multiplayer.

The one thing I cannnot stand about console FPS is alot of times you have to share the screen with the peeps you're playing against and that can sometimes give you the advantage or put you at a disadvantage depending on who knows their maps and where the items spawn.

I like PC multiplayer FPS 'cuz I get the whole screen to use with no onlookers who are competing against me and I can get in on games that can have 20 or so players in it. I just picked up Return to Castle Wolfenstein on PC and the multiplayer in that if hella fun.

I've heard the multiplayer in Powerslave/Exhumed is supposed to be really good. Any truth to this?

My fave FPS are both on the N64 Perfect Dark folowed by Goldeneye!
Haven't used my PC for games... Found the Game Cube FPS fairly poor bar Timesplitters 2? But the N64 games are my preference.

Yet to play Halo on the X-Box, tho I have a feeling I would like the game.

Having developed a ton of a respect for Bungie after enjoying loads of Halo makes me really curious about the Marathon games. I'd love to see a reworked Marathon trilogy for the Box.
Couldnt be that much of a chore...

You know, alphex, loopz. Much respect guys, but god damn are you completely wrong about Halo being the best FPS ever made.

I mean Halo is decent, but the level design is pretty bad. I mean when you gotta turn around and go BACK through the same levels, but backwards for half the game, well it's pretty shitty.

And I'm sorry, I know LAN play is cool and all (hey us PC players have been doing it for years), but NOTHING and I mean NOTHING can beat the FPS classics. Team Fortress (no not Team Fortress Classic that you Half Life people know), I mean the ORIGINAL Team Fortress mod for Quake 1. One word guys, TwoForts. If you don't know what that is, then don't even try to talk about how Halo is better than any PC FPS.

There are so many great single and multiplayer games. Multiplayer #1 now has to be Unreal Tournament 2003. Single Player #1 has gotta be Deus EX or Half Life.

I mean there are so many different TYPES of FPS games now, you can't even make #1 FPS generalizations anymore. I mean games like Operation Flashpoint and Battlefield 1942 have changed how these large scale FPS matches are done. I mean you think getting in a truck with a machine gun is special? These games you can hop in an Apache Helicopter with a pilot and gunner (or have the pilot put it on manual fire). You can get into a ton of old style planes to go on attack runs. There are tanks, jeeps, military transports, attack boats, everything. And each one is controlled in thier own manner, almost a completely different game comes out when you're flying a helicopter around, it's that damn good. Even now, you just can't match the PC when it comes to FPS games.

Peace

We've had this discussion before dude. Like I said, it mirrors the way I feel about CvS2. To me, CvS2 is just a patchwork toy version of the better SNK and Capcom fighters, with really weak versions of SNK's characters and shite 3D BG's.
Has all those wonderful gameplay holes every Capcom fighter has sported since 1998.

Yeah, Halo isn't close to the best single-player FPS ever (although 2P co-op kicks much ass). For me though, the LAN versus just owns. Nothing like a house full of people trying smoke each other. Halo 2 will be the lone reason for me to actually jump on XBL.

Bold statement. :)

I disagree.

Great game, it certainly is, but not the best FPS ever created. And I'm not one of those pissed off PC people who was mad about Halo not hitting the PC first. But as far as I am concerned, PC FPS games basically beat the shit out of any FPS shooter on a console system, Halo included.

Me personally, if I had to pick what I think is the best FPS ever, I'd say Half-Life.
