Arcade Honour System

If there's one thing that irks me after all these years on the frontlines of any and all arcades is...

The person who never asks "Do you mind if I jump in?" when you're playing a fighting game like SF or KOF. WTF? How hard is it to ask someone if they mind. A lot of ppl do this on the honor system and I give props to. It shows proper respect for someone who may be trying to actually beat a game, or improve before they're ready for a bout with someone else. Sure the arcade is everyone's turf... but shit man, honor goes a long way in my book. I know ppl who never lose at fighting games but who want to beat the game, and some asshole makes him fight him for 30 minutes by plunking in a token/quarter without just saying... "Hey man, you mind?" In most casese the person playing won't, but to simply assume! Anyhow that's my rant of the night.

I know what you mean man. I ask a person if I can jump in a game before putting my token/quarter in. However it doesn't bother me much when someone jumps in to play against me, in fact, I WANT somebody to jump in and play me. They reason why is because there is little competition in fighting games where I go. Almost everyone is playing those damn DDR games. The people who actually challenge me are either scrubs or like to turtle.

I have always been kind enough to ask before entering. I agree, it's rude and disrespectful. Still, there's nothing like having some jack-ass budge in, only to destroy his ego with your favorite special. Mmmmmmmmm. <img src="graemlins/drool.gif" border="0" alt="[Drool]" />

I'm very happy to see there's still a sense of honor amongst arcade gamers. I feel happier now.

When I ask to jump in, it's gone from, "May I join you?" to, "Is this side working?" There are many a dubious player who will let you join and then not tell you that the 2up side is broken. A young man in San Franciso felt my rage when he failed to tell me that the 2up on MvC2 was messed up. I defeated him without my assists and jumping at awkward times.

Lesson: Please make sure be honest when the 2up is broken. There's no honor in beating up a disabled fighter.

Lesson 2: -Never- lie to me. <img src="graemlins/blowtop.gif" border="0" alt="[Blow Top]" />

The issue of an uninvited 2nd player is especially annoying for arcade shooting game fantatics. Back when arcades were "big" and packed with choice 2D shooting goodness like the "Raiden" series games, some bumbling putz would - without fail - always jump in on my game, totally throwing my "groove" into the gutter.

Oh my god, I agree with this 100%. This irritates me more than when people jump in on fighting games, because on very rare occasions do I actually want to fight the CPU in an arcade fighting game, unless I'm going for a high score / fast time on something. The arcade is what competition is for, so fuck all you people bitching about people joining in on them on fighting games. :D

so anyways, this one time I was playing Shock Troopers (boy, there's a surprise), a game I much prefer playing solo. I like to squeeze as many points as I can out of the game and I can't do that when there's a dumbass shooting all the enemies I want to get with close-range kills. So this dumbass walks up and puts in a quarter while I'm playing. He starts pushing all the buttons before he finds the Start button. Including the Game Select button for christ's sake. He eventually finds the Start button, but Shock Troopers asks you what characters you want to pick when you join in on someone. He did not see this. After pushing the Start button he pushes it again. Then the Game Select button. Then he starts pushing the B, C, and D buttons, everything BUT the A button he needed to press to select some characters. He then starts looking in the coin slot trying to get his quarter back. Eventually time runs out and characters get selected for him. He kept pushing the C button and using all his special attacks. He ran out quickly of course, and then nothing would happen when he pushed the C button. He checked the coin slot AGAIN TRYING TO GET HIS QUARTER BACK! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS DUMBFUCK?!? I just rolled my eyes, reached over and pushed his A button to point out that, hey look, that button actually shoots! He finally seemed to understand that and proceeded to wreck my high score attempt.

Although actually I was pretty close to a boss at that point, so I didn't shoot at the boss at all, I just rolled around dodging bullets and let him die off real fast. :D

But shit, what a fucking retard.

I agree, when you are trying to beat the game it is annoying just to have people jump in without even asking. This gets particularly annoying when someone just joins in then starts button mashing hoping they can do something.

Asking to join in a fighting game ? What for ? I do it sometimes ( esp. if the other guys a newbie ), but sometimes I don't...

It's a fighting game... <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

Honour?

<img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[LOL]" />

I don't think anybody in here knows about honour. <img src="graemlins/annoyed.gif" border="0" alt="[Annoyed]" />

My old arcade ( that doesn't exist anymore ) had a strict code of honour, which included mercy rounds ( if you don't know what this means , then I don't know what to say) , no throwing in KOF ( every throw had to be given back ), mercy rounds in KOF, no infinites, trash talking was fine but no vulgar stuff, etc.
Break the code and you opened yourself up to a quick humiliation by one of the top players.
( Myself included in SS4 ;) And you didn't really want that , because I used Nako and Rimmy ).
It also included not wiping the floor with noobs... <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

I always ask. You know, you pay money to play a game, you want to enjoy it. Sometimes, even playing a fighter, I don't want another player to join in at all. Like when I am trying to get to see the endings. Fuck if I care about a 2p competition then.

PS: Evil Nick and Dark Andy are related. You can tell by his posts...

Same here...

Also, there are some times when I wouldn't even ask to join, for example if the guy's experimenting with comboes... I'll just leave the guy to his practice... Usually you can tell if the other player wants you to join or not... ;)

i dont really have a problem when ppl join in withought asking because in my mind beating a fighter in the arcade is just a faster game over..there are no endings anymore anywayz!! :(

but i usually ask when its someone who i think i can beat fairly easily just because i dont want to take theyre game unless they know what te in for (im not egotistical sorry i just play fighting games alot..and not everyone in the arcade does)

if its someone who looks like a good challenge and and seems just as good or better than i i just jump in and play.

the one thing i have a big problem with is the honor thing..i say good game to EVERYONE i play in the arcade..its kidna a habbit ..win or loose i say good game but rarely do ppl reply...its like being spit in the face..i supose the person cold be angry for loosing..but comon..and i dont win all the time..its the same when i loose..."good game man"..........nothing

i think mercy rounds (seconds as its known here) is good in casual play. but when things get heated i dont think they should be there. no unessasary advantages should

Read my post below, I think you've misunderstood me...

EDIT : I meant to say below yours ( posted at the same time )

That was never a secret, I thought most people knew anyway...
DARK ANDY is my brother, he was the one who found this message board and shown it to me... Anything wrong with that?

And give me a break , I've had a call-in at 12:30 am today morning and just got off work... forgive me if I'm easily irritated... <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

The emoticons are there to be used. ;) And I don't put eight of them in a row either...

You can't do that anymore... People look at you like you're crazy if you do that, don't know why though...

That depends... Most of the time I had to be the one to give the round to the other player... ;) And I almot always did ( the exceptions are when I knew the guy doesn't give them )

I remember when i was on holiday in america and was enjoying a game of House Of The Dead, when some punk kid muddy funster wanted to join in and 'help' except he wanted ME to pay for him to play. I scared him off with my scarey dudley accent.

I have never beaten 3rd strike because in my arcade the cabinets only have 1 joystack and buttons per side and they're bak to back in rows. So you never even see the other guy coming until he starts, it's a fools paradise!

Battle City cabs!

I like them because you get ample elbow room, plu you don't have to listen to trash talk...

ypu it's a battler's paradise. not only do they have those. but all the other fighters are on big screens with big-ass amounts of elbow room. They upgraded just for that purpose. Very kind if you ask me! If anyone's in California I can tell you where it's at.
