I have had a PS2 for over a year now and it has never failed me until today. I got two new games and some DVD's for Christmas and when I whent to put them in it only reads about 50% of the games I stick into it. I have a warranty but this still makes me mad. Sony needs to make better hardware, I am not the only one that has had this disk read error from what I hear. Is there anything I can try to do to fix it? I don't really want to use my warranty up and have the new PS2 break on me later and be stuck without and warranty at all.

Join the club. I've had 4 (or was it 5) PS2s die on me. I'm glad I had the extended warranty, which ran out in October. It wasn't from over use, as there would be times when I would go 2 months without turning it on at all. I also make sure to keep the dust out of all the vents and out of the power supply fan. I also dust the entire unit, to keep it free from dust as well. I even used to run a CD/DVD lense cleaner on it on a regular basis. Going through 4 systems made me realize that cleaning it does absolutely no good whatsoever.

The only thing you can do is find someone who can repair it, or send it to Sony for repair. If you pay someone to repair it, you are also voiding any warranties you may have on it, as more than likely they are not Sony certified techs.

If you send it to Sony, supposedly they fix the problem for "free" (you pay shipping and handling to get it there). Call their tech support and see what they say. If you have an extended warranty, even if you take advantage of it, you'll still be covered on your new system for the remainder of the warranty. And some places actually allow you to buy another extended warranty when the 1 or 2 years is up. If you paid the extra $$$ for the extended warranty, don't just waste the money, use it.

My PS2 has been fine it's entire life since launch. But one of my friends totally died or something. He left it on a LONG time (like a couple of days or something) with GTA on it (I think that he didn't want to save or something...). Anyways he bought a new one, swapped the dead PS2 with the new one, returned it to the store, and now he has a PS2 that works. I don't know if this is good to try because I think that they look at the serial numbers on the console. However, for some reason the serial number wasn't printed out on the receipt. Plus it is kind of an evil thing to do...

To go off on a tangent:...

What I did have MAJOR problems with was the DC at launch. I went through about 4 DC's and 6 Sonic Adventures before I got a working combination. It was horrible, but luckily Soul Caliber worked, so all was not lost.

End tangent.

Man that bites Mike, sorry to hear that. But nothing with Sony surprises me anymore, even so I'm one to talk as I'll get my 2nd PS2 soon enough to play Rygar and the GTA games. I hope you have something (another system) to play in the meantime. :(

No need for fanboy comments here. I love my PS2 and I already have a Xbox. I am just upset that it doesn't work with all of my games. I am going to buy compressed air and clean it out real good, I hope it works.

Most of breakdown PS2 consoles are made-in-China.

Bestbuys has new shippment which is made-in-japan.

Don't ask me why but I love made-in-Japan console. Trust me, it will last longer.

Once I was in a gamestore talking with the clerk about my (then) broken PS2. He got this angry look in his and eyes and said, "Yeah, I know what you're talking about -- this disc read error thing. PS2 hardware is made CHEAP-LY and it is IN-TENT-IONAL." He stretched out the "cheaply" and "intentional" in such a semi-funny accent it has sticked with me even to this day.

Sorry to hear that Mike but before that happened to me I traded my PS2, 3 games , a mem card and a DVD controller for the Xbox massive entertainment pack. :D And I don't regret it.

I treded mine in cause my friend had a PS2 (he had it only for 4 months) and it just stopped reading discs and got worse from there and that put me off heaps. Sony what a joke. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />
