Well, hot on the heels of official denial from Capcom about the rumoured buy out by Nintendo, another 'Megaton' rumour arrives to fill the void.

(Thanks to Spong for keeping the flame burning ;) )

Exclusive details: Secret Nintendo technical announcement looms for CES 24th Dec 2002

Nintendo

Megaton rears up again as new disc technology emerges

In a report filed in US Intensity Magazine, it appears that Nintendo Japan is poised to make a major technological announcement at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show, (CES), due to take place in Las Vegas between the 9th and 10th of January.

Although nothing was revealed as the content of this announcement, speculation is growing that this will comprise at least part of the now infamous Megaton Announcement, which thus far has proved highly illusive.

However, we can reveal that this announcement is likely to be in relation to a new form of disc based data storage, which is in development at the moment.

According to reports from Japan today, Matsushita, the firm that partnered Nintendo on certain aspects of development for GameCube, is working in conjunction with Osaka University, (just round the corner from Capcom’s HQ funnily enough) to release a disc-based data storage medium capable of holding up to 15 terabytes of data. That’s 300 bigger than a DVD folks!

We believe that Nintendo will announce a working name for its future console at CES and that this will make up at least part of the machine’s integral DNA.

Expect more soon, and remember where you saw this first…

15 F***ING Terabytes?
Thats about every PS2 game and all your favourite PS1 games on one disk!

(Not that you'd want them again..)

But really! Amazing achievement but who in the near future will need that amount of space for a console game?

'A' for effort though!

This has to be the toughest competition for Nintendo right. At least they are repairing some old partnerships. Whatever this damn Megaton announcement happens to be, i'll back nintendo.

Well if someone would ever make the game I have in my brain *A game based on the first three William Gibson books Neruomancer, Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive* that would be at best described as FABLE meets Shenmue with elements of massive gunplay where you play out your own character or the charas from the books in a non-linear world... then yeah, for the amount data needed for a game of that size, without the use of a Harddrive like on the XBOX... I can fully see truly epic games needing that much data storage on a Disc based format.

I really don't like to speculate much about these things, but would any one else be extremely happy if Nintendo announced that it was buying SEGA? I mean, this would give SEGA the secure financial backing it's been looking for. Not to mention there the two most respected names in gaming history. What do you guys think? A Nintendo/SEGA Dreamcube in 3 years perhaps?

I'd rather see Nintendo buy Playmore as a 2nd party developer and have them release titles on MVS, AES and Gamecube only. Playmore could use the cash and the attorneys from Nintendo to stop the fahqing pirates. I'd rather see Playmore/SNK titles on the cube than on PScrap or Xjunk. Just my 3,1 cents.

If Nintendo bought playmore you really think they would still support the mvs and aes? They would drop it and pick up Triforce in a heart beat. If Playmore could just put some things out on better arcade boards and such it could do so much more for them. I like the Neo too, but it's simply out dated. Piracy could much easily be defended with new arcade hardware and such. I had hoped SNK would have been purchased by SEGA myself. This would give them the all platform thing, naomi hardware, and since sega keeps their development teams to kind of do their own things, it would keep the SNK name and such. dreams...nothing but dreams...
