A friend of mine is getting his son a DC for Christmas, and I am trying to figure out what games he ought to get to go with it. He does not do much with consoles, although he does have a SEGA Genesis, with stuff like Streets Of Rage II, Phantasy Star IV, the Sonic games, Golden Axe, etc. He is not really into head-to-head fighters like Street Fighter II S.C.E., although he does have that on his Genesis.

On PC, his tastes run more to Diablo II, TRIBES, Counter-Strike, StarCraft, Unreal Tournament 2003, Angband, etc.

For starters I was thinking perhaps Gauntlet Legends, Zombie's Revenge, Grandia II, and Jet Grind Radio, as well as Crazy Taxi. Perhaps HydroThunder and Rush 2049, as well. I thought about adding Skies Of Arcadia to the list, but I think the frequent random encounters would frustrate him a bit.

My three nephews (9, 12, 14) really like the Power Stone games, as well as Rayman 2, Ooga Booga, Looney Tunes Space Race, Bomberman Online and Virtua Tennis 2k2.

Don't see how he could go wrong with a Sonic game and Crazy Taxi. Tossing in a rumble pack and memory card would make it a nice, cheap, but well rounded and essential pacakge, in my opinion.

Go for Sword of the Berserk :) Just kidding.

If he liked those games on the Genesis, maybe you could pick up the Smash Pack CD? If you can find it that is?

I want to say Chuchu rocket, but you know, when you're a kid, you still want to play "cool games." I think Chimpmeister knows what 9 year olds like. Just ask him what "mature games" are on the system.

Get him some 2D shooters for the DC and lock him in a room until he likes them!

Kids these days just don't know what they're missing.

i'd never give such games to a 9 year old kid. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

This guy deserves a hand.

He's either :

1.) A budget-minded dad feeling the poisonous sting of recession like the rest of us,

-or-

2.) A cheap dad.

My guess is #1.

In which case:

The Grinch
Looney Tunes Space Race
Wacky Races
Outrigger
Gauntlet Legends

those games listed above are great, but save some cash and burn some homebrew stuff.

Feet of Fury (kinda like DDR, very proffesional looking), Quake I has been ported over.

<a href="http://homebrew.dcemulation.com/" target="_blank">http://homebrew.dcemulation.com/</a>

also, what kid wouldn't like a NesterDC disc loaded with all the old mario games?

Actually, it is #3, a dad that has seen and appreciates what the Dreamcast is capable of, and realizes what a vast library of good games are available for it relatively cheap. ;)
