OK, so this interview is a little out dated, but it gives a fair idea why CN edits their titles, or has others edit their titles.

Find the interview here.

The Anime viewer side of me doesn't want to see shows be edited, but the practical side of me sees why they would edit some things, such as the Star of David slot machine entry on Tenchi Muyo. I'd rather have crazed Otaku hate me than have some crazy religious zealots hate me!

[edit]And WOW I didn't realize how much Anime CN has been or has shown. Interesting. I'm glad they got InuYasha though, as for this AWESOME show, the more fans the better! I may not watch it on CN, but if it gets people into it, I'm all for it.

Well, this just comes back to my theory that CN needs a seperate channel for un-edited shows for people that arent in grade school.

(and that list of edited anime's isnt just for CN, alot of those are on TechTV and various other channels)

True about it not all being CN stuff. I looked over it again and realized some of it's on Tech TV.

Looking at the listing of edits, if you haven't seen Dual and you like Evangelion but hated the ending, this show is for you. It's blatantly obvious they ripped entire scenes out of Eva, and this show has a "real" ending. I enjoyed it.

Anyway, I am curious as to what the Anime Channel from ADV is going to do. Will it be edited Anime? Is it a video on demand channel? If so, my guess is that it won't be edited, but what do I know? Will they show subbed, or dubbed only? If ADV can get other licensers shows on there, and offer a choice of subbed/dubbed for the shows, I could imagine it being a popular channel.

I honestly think we're pretty lucky that the Cartoon Network shows anime at all. I was really glad when they came out with thier Adult Swim stuff because as much as i love some CN originals like the powerpuffs, dexter, and ed edd and eddy, its nice to see some shows oriented towards a mature audience. On plus side i think cartoon network has gotten people more interested in Anime which i suppose is good.

I have always wondered though if CN would come out with an Anime channel -it'd probably do well. I mean hell they have the Boomerang netowrk and apparently people are watching that! I admit there are several good shows on boomerang (yogi bear!) but i dont like most of the older cartoons.

Does the Sci-Fi channel still show anime? I remember they used to around 6 or 7 years on saturday mornings. The Sci-Fi channel was how i was introduced to Vampire Huunter D and one my personal favorites: Project A-Ko.

I actually hate all of the Hanna-Barbara trash CN throws on, especially Samurai Jack. But to each their own :D

But anyway, the SCI-FI channel does NOT show Anime any longer. They stopped it a long time ago. If I'm not mistaken, that is where I saw a bit of Robot Carnival (where's the DVD for that, anyway?). Maybe that was on early Saturday morning on CN? Too long ago to remember.

Iria, Lodoss and a heavily edited Akira (edit for content and time) are the shows I remember most from the SCI-FI viewings.

The reason I don't think CN will do an all Anime network is:

1) ADV has one coming (although it's limited to ADV ANIM right now, what a surprise with ADV)
2) Editing costs money and as long as they need sponsors, editing will be an issue
3) There is a LOT of Anime out there, but is there enough to do Anime ONLY on a channel? Do they even have an Anime only channel in Japan?

It would be cool to get a real, non-"buy ADV Anime" channel, but I don't see it happening. The only other reason I wouldn't want one is because I refuse to watch a dub at this point, and that's likely all they would show, since they probably couldn't get sponsors if it was all subbed.

Slerch, I guess that you have already seen this, but just in case you havent, the Anime Network channel is a video-on-demand service. Other than that, I have no idea if you get a choice between sub/dub or if its edited.
Guess you could always e-mail them or post the question on a forum that ADV staff frequent (like AoD.com or Dubreview.com.

As for the article, interesting read. Not that I watch CN (only have terrestrial telly).
Its interesting to see just how picky some people can be about having something as minor as a religious symbol on a fruit machine. It just goes to show that 'silly' censorship is partly our fault (as in people in general - not just stupid corporate execs). It seems to have lead to huge inconsistencies (spelling?) in what can be shown.
Its OK to show something like Ren & Stimpy , or Cow & Chicken which is completely mental and full of gross close-ups of maggot-filled ear-wax and more snot and mucus than you could shake a stick at, but a close shot of a wound? NO WAY!

Daft, just daft..... oh_no

I saw the VOD thing after I posted. Looks like that's the way it is. I posed the question here, hoping someone was in a test location for the channel. I'll shoot the Anime Channel an email to find out about subbed/dubbed. :D

As far as censorship goes, it's because parents want the TV to be parents and not themselves that censorship exists at all on TV. If parents would take the time to explain the difference between real and make believe (we used to leave THAT to Mr.Rogers :D ). "I can't sit little Jimmy down in front of the TV if the TV will show him blood and breasts, because then he'll bother me about it. I put him in front of the TV so he would LEAVE ME ALONE, not talk to me or ask me questions."

We can thank censorship of Anime on Walt Disney. Walt taught the US that cartoons are for children and children can't handle "heavy" material, such as death. Because of this mentality, it is my understanding that the final episode of Astro Boy NEVER aired, because someone died in it.

Why can't a cartoon be like a soap opera? Why can't a cartoon be like an action movie? Why can't a cartoon be like a sitcom? The Japanese have accepted that cartoons can be any type of entertainment they want, including "adult" entertainment. Why can't Americans accept the fact? Who knows?

Hell, the Japanese have been watching uncensored cartoons for how long (yeah, they do have TV standards, which is why you will see a few bare breast shots, no genital shots, and blood, but not the ultra-violence some of their stuff is known for)? Is their society any more fucked up than ours? No. What does this tell you? Cartoons aren't to blame for a fucked up society. Society has been fucked up longer than cartoons have been around. OK, so the Japanese have more suicides, but that's due to stress, not cartoons.

I can easily understand them not showing Hentai on CN. I can't understand why they can't show blood in Yu Yu Hakusho. Blood is reality. We all bleed. What do you teach a kid who sees people getting beat up and killed without blood?

Anyway, I'm stopping my rant. Hopefully someone read through it. :D
