After the atrocious first round of WTC site proposals, it looks like we've finally got some downright spectacular designs on the table. These new building truly give us something NEW to look at. Example:

There were 7 different proposals, I highly recommend that anyone either into architecture or curious about what will replace the WTC should check out the link below.

[There are different pictures on the NY Times site, but I think the ones on the LA Times site are easier to understand in context]

That building looks nice! I wish I could see the other pictures, but it says you have to be a member to view anything. Well I'm glad people are being creative about it and designing awesome buildings that the world may marvel at.

Having known people killed in the 9/11 attacks, and remembering how the WTC was before it was destroyed, I would prefer it if they just rebuilt the Twin Towers with a memorial at the base, perhaps where the atrium used to be.

The NY skyline will just not look right with these new outlandish concept designs.

It also gives a more definant stance to terrorism by simply returning things to how they were.

With modern technology and knowing what we now know there is no reason why the Towers cannot be rebuilt and rebuilt to withstand all eventualities bar an act of god.

I hope I haven't up set anyone here, but that's how I feel. Rebuild the Twin Towers and stick two fingers up at terrorists.

Next to what Tarma said this is the only design that looked good(i.e. an actual building)

Funny....when the Twin Towers were originally designed, people of that generation decried them for being so basic and unimaginative in design. Now you have people criticizing these new designs because they're too 'modern art.'

I personally like the design by Libeskind...the one with the 1,776 foot tower...symbolizing the year America declared her independence. Overall though, this round of proposals is significantly better than the first round, I didn't like a single one of those. Perhaps some distance from the tragedy is allowing the architects creativity to flow better. I think it really is important that they leave the footprints of the original towers alone though. One of the designs from the first round had 'thinking pools' where the towers once stood...it was the only concept from the first round of designs that was at all worth talking about.

I'm just glad they're using the land rather than taking up the whole area with some useless memorial park ala Oklahoma City. That particular designed pictured is kinda funky though.

And sonic, you're confusing modern art with teenagers.

Yes, this is the only design I even remotely liked.

Despite the 'dull' appearance of the Twin Towers they are the WTC and anybody who has ever been around them (and out on to the roof) will tell you what an awesome place it was.

These outlandish designs maybe a tribute to those lost but they're not practical in anyway nor do they make any kind of statement about how America has pulled through the attrocity and united to become a better place and make the world a safer place.

What better way to defy those who hate the West and Capitalism, and believe they struck such a blow on 9/11 than rebuilding the Towers to as they were.

Personally I can't think of a better way - let the designers come up with a more appropriate gesture such as grand memorial chapel to sit on the site so people can actually go to a place of sanctuary and honour the dead while seeing that they've not died in vain.

Sticking up those stupid structures says nothing to me, only 'Hi. We're the New York Port Authority, and boy do we know how to waste money'.

I say rebuild the Twin Towers in the shape of 2 huge Fists giving the Middle finger and point them both toward Afganastan.

Curious design... But I think that they should build a more elegant structure that would redefine the history archetecture much like the Egyptian pyramids had. That would be a great way to honor the people who died on 9/11... :)

Afghanistan? You mean the parking lot? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[LOL]" />

Sorry Bobak, but with all due respect that design looks like shit. Rebuild the towers the way they were, to build something like THAT in its place would be a disgrace to the people that died there IMO. :(

LOL, That's the beauty of artistic expression... I actually thought that particular design was the ugliest of them all. (it looked to old-fashioned, like the Rockafeller center but much more Imperial)

BTW, my personal choice wasn't the one I posted above, CNN.com had a vote on which one you thought looked better, I voted for United Architect's Proposal (2 pictures directly below):

BTW, here are some other shots they added:

This one looks pretty sharp:

I admit, I'm a big architecture buff -some may cringe but the postmodern style is my favorite. I really can't stand the Modern (Le Corbusier) or its progeny (brutalist, minimalist) which was part of the direct genesis of the original towers.

You probably wouldn't be shocked to find out that I love Frank O. Gehry's work.

They couldn't possibly afford to not use at least some of the land. All of the current proposals have a substantially smaller "footprint" than the original towers so they will allow for a large park.

The most pressing critism that's arisen recently is over the need for all the commercial space.

The current trend in Lower Manhattan seems to be towards Bloomberg's proposed "Village of the World" with lots more housing and live/work flair. I think they may end up converting portions of whichever proposal works into apartments or lofts.

Let's not forget the entire WTC site is huge. There's nothing stopping them rebuilding the Twin Towers as they were and including some pointless parkland on another section of the site.

Seems to be the answer to all memorials these days... make a park. Christ, now if that doesn't show a total lack of imagination I don't know what does.
