I'm talking about Final Fantasy Tactics, Vandal Hearts, Etc.

So far, I've only played a handful of this genre, including the two I referenced above;

SO what's everyone's favorites in this genre? And no, I'm not including US programmed RTS PC games like Starcraft/Warcraft.

if you liked Final Fantasy Tactics, you owe it to yourself to play Tactics Ogre on the PSX and GBA.

The new FFT on the GBA looks so lousy. I'm getting it just to see for myself, but the "law" system is just gay...

Does Vasteel count? Or would Vasteel 2 and Robotech: Love Song count?

What about Millitary Madness/Nectaris? Dune (SegaCD)? Was there a console version of Dune 2? :p

There was a Dune game for the Genesis as well.

I'm partial to Risk and Pirates! Gold, though.

Vandal Hearts probably requires the most "strategy" of any of them - it's not a game where you can level up - victory is almost soley based on how well you plan your moves.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre are great, too. FFT flows a lot better than TO (there's way to much leveling *required* in TO), but TO scores some points for a non-linear storyline.

Dragon Force was also mentioned and I would agree that you should try it out. I've always thought the Shining Force series was plain vanilla, though - like Vandal Hearts without the strategy...

Was Saiyuki: Journey West ever released? I saw ads for it in gaming mags and it looked pretty cool but I never saw it in stores. Was it ever released here in the US? If so how is it?

I agree with Mog, Ring of Red for the PS2 is great if you enjoyed, say...advance wars.

Yes, and it was awesome. It was only about 20 hours though, but I'm starting to appreciate short RPGs though. Since it was only 20 hours there was no point that it got boring or tired or that I lost the urge to play.

I got bored with it 20 minutes into it, that and it was way to freaking easy, I had to die on purpose cause I wondered what the game over screen looked like. Then there was the theme song, "Magic Son Goku", WTF!?!?!?!?!?

Well, I can't really give any particular reason that you didn't enjoy it. FFT was way too easy too, and had one of the worst turn based strategy systems I've ever used, and the story wasn't any more exciting thatn Saiyuki's, but everyone seems to like that. I definitely think that Saiyuki is one of the better games listed in this thread.

I agree. That's the most crap I've ever purchased for 10 bucks.
