well guys it's time for another one of those questions to see if something is moral, or the lack of it. I recently got a sould calibur 2 joystick for my ps2. But after playing my favorite game capcom vs snk 2 on it for a while I've noticed it lacks the perfection of my american joystick parts. I can't do custom combos like the sakura or bison on that thing. So I'm considering putting in american parts instead. I know it'd kill the resale value but that doesn't bother me. I'm just wondering how limited were these things? I'd feel bad if I freaked a joystick that only released 500 or so.

Do you realize how much deeper the mounting requirements are for an American (I'm assuming Happs) joystick is? That's why Japanese joysticks can be so damn short, Sanwa sticks are tiny as hell vertically.
Happs on the other hand has a depth of like 3.5" compared to the standard japanese depth of like 1.5". There ain't no way on gods green earth you'd fit one of those in there if you're talking about the Japanese Soul Calibur 2 stick on PS2.

You CAN'T shorten the components! The height is what makes US joysticks feel so much different from the Japanese ones! That's why a Happs Super feels so much "tighter" than a standard Sanwa, the spring is longer and gives you a saller range of motion where the Sanwa sticks motion is limited more by how soon it hits the microswitches, not because of how tight the spring is.
If you can successfully do this I'll send $5 to you via PayPal for pics and how you did it. Right now I'm telling you, it can't be done.
Just buy the Capcom vs. SNK sticks.

Sell it and buy something else..depending on rariety and value.

Dude its your stick, do whatever the hell you want with it. Its not like this is some ethical decision. I agree with JHendrix in that i don't think it can be done - but i won't give you $5 dollars if you do it.
If i were you i would just buy a stick from somewhere like x-arcade or red octane, or better yet: make a stick yourself. Its lots of fun.
