Call me old-fashioned, but there's just something missing with the current crop of anime features. Not that there aren't exceptions to the rule (Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop), but even in supposedly action-themed OVAs and flicks there seems to be a real lack of action. Most anime today seems to be hell-bent on incorporating lots of CG and being really mopey and depressed.

Here's three cheers for the likes of:

Super Dimension Fortress Macross (THE GODFATHER)
Genesis Climber Mospeada
Bubblegum Crisis
Fist Of The North Star
Area 88
Appleseed
Black Magic M-66
Dangaioh
Gall Force
MD Geist
Record Of Lodoss War
Golgo 13
Vampire Hunter D
Wings Of Honneamise (mopey, but really worth watching).

Feel free to add more you think belong with these fine old folks.

If it's action you want, nothing beats a dose of Lupin III, granddaddy of action anime.

We're off in outer space
Protecting Mother Earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers

Danger lurking everywhere
But we know we've got to dare
Evil men with evil schemes
They can't destroy all our dreams

We must be strong and brave
Our home we've got to save
We must make the fighting cease
So Mother Earth will be at peace

Through all the fire and the smoke
We will never give up hope
If we can win the Earth will survive
We'll keep peace alive
With our Star Blazers

DBZ.

No seriously I grew up on the fansubbs of this stuff. Yeah it's ass now that they've bastardized it for 6 year olds but back in it's day it was the shiznit.

City Hunter is an old school classic I'm just now discovering, very top notch stuff. :)

Loopz, if you want to check out a really good action anime that's fairly recent Noir is a very very good choice.

Dangaioh! Such a fantasticly cheesy mech anime. I wish I had the english script for that sucker, because there were some classic bad guy quotes in there.

I'd like to add:

Odin (if only for the brilliant sound track)
The Castle of Cagliostro
Gunbuster (Eva fans look here)
Devil Man OVAs
Green Legend Ran
Battle Angel Alita
Plastic Little

I watched tons of both those shows too, but didn't include 'em solely because...

A. Voltron was really bastardized with a horrible dub. This is the same reason I refer to Macross and Mospeada instead of Robotech. Yeah, it's kind of elitist and uber-fanboyish, but fuck it, it's how I feel. I've always preferred subs to dubs.

B. The Transformers cartoon we got here, although based on a Japanese toy, hardly qualifies as anime.

What I was getting at in this thread was the wonder of the 'dark ages' of anime, when very little info was prevalent, and often you ended up risking $30 on a tape at Suncoast just because the back of the box looked cool. I was fortunate here because we have a giant, kick-ass video rental store called Casa Video that got onboard the anime wagon fairly quickly and eliminated a lot of the gamble in buying those expensive tapes.

Nowadays, there's so much info in the form of magazines and web forums that it's pretty easy to find out what's good and what's shit.

Maison Ikkoku - 1986, but feels even older than that. Kind of like the mother of all ronin anime out there, but still unique despite all of the similar shows it spawned.

Bubblegum Crisis - Honestly, I don't remember much of the plot... just the music.

People have mentioned Lupin, but not Castle of Cagliostro in specific. Never seen the original series itself, but the movie was plenty enjoyable on its own.

I'm also currently looking forward (or is it backward?) to my latest acquisition - the Kimagure Orange Road box set on LD!

And a big thumbs down to Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter. A couple of snooze-fests indeed. make_fac

Maybe not G1 series 1 - 3, but from Headmasters onwards it definately leaned more towards anime themes. I cant believe i didnt mention it, i must be losing my touch :D

Well yeah I'm sure the series were butchered to ALL HELL when they were brought over, but I was like 5 years old when I was watching some of this stuff so it's not like I cared much. :)

As for Transformers I was informed (never did any personal look-ups for this) that our cartoon was bastardized from an already released Anime in Japan.

Also if I'm not mistaken wasn't Tundercats also an Anime in japan before being bastardized err dubbed for the US?

I do get your point and luckily I avoided a lot of the pain that you and a few other people had to go through back then when it came to anime. I still remember getting raped, I had an unhealthy DBZ addiction when I was 13-15 years old and was stuck getting fansubs of it off of this one comic book store over here.

$15 a bootleg tape with subs on it was painful but at least I know what the series was like years before the travesty that is DBZ now has come about. :)

I mentioned Castle of Cagliostro...amazing film and still Miyazaki's best in my opinion.

I love Ninja Scroll! And Wicked City and Monster City, too. All of Kawajiri's old anime, for that matter.

No one said Dragonball yet...

So I will.

Dragonball

My first venture into the world of anime ages ago, and still one of my all time favorite series.

Don't think so...it's of US origin as far as I'm aware. They were trying to imitate the anime style, however (or cash-in, however you want to interpret it).

If you're looking for action watch Scryed. They had a big (it seems) budget and they put it all into fights, some of the best fights I've seen yet. Also has a great story, soundtrack and beautiful art to boot. Currently my #2 of all time.

:)
Transformers is an American creation in both series and toys, although Hasbro ripped the idea from a late 70's transforming japanese toy line(forget the name but the info is out there).....

Even worse, the JAPANESE GOT BASTARDISED episodes, basically the first 3 USA series were butchered , remixed and rearranged for asia....had great theme music though. The last 10 or so series have been 100% japanese (excpet CG series), some messed with for the west, RiD inparticular.
