I seem to recall you saying something about how we JUST broke 60fps in quake3. Please refer to the following scan from macworld.

proof.jpg

Weeeellllll the top stat is from the dual 1.25gzh tower, BUT the bottom two are system results from the dual 1ghz tower (one is with DDR and one is without). Gee Jimmy, it would be awful hard for the mac to have JUST broken 60 when the dual 1ghz model has been out for so long.

:D :D :D
gutted.

How much better can pc do? Find me some benchmarks to show me that the new macs are vastly inferior to a cheaper peecee. I dont think its possible. Im not saying macs are the best gaming machines out there; Im just trying to show that they can certainly hold their own

geforce 4 ti4200 over 120fps in fucking 1600x1200

<a href="http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/gf4ti4200/gf4_4.htm" target="_blank">http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/gf4ti4200/gf4_4.htm</a>

even a geforce 2 mx can pull over 50 fps in quake 3 at 1024x768x32 which is a $50 card

and look at the geforce 2 ti, ~$100 card i think, can pull over $150

I have a Mac (G4) and a PC. I'm not a big computer gamer, and they make all the big name games for the Mac that I would want, so I use it for gaming. It's much more stable. Never seen it crash in the year I've had it.

Excuse me, but I said that macs just broke the 100FPS marker in Quake 3. I even told you to look at the benchmarks in the latest macworld if you remember. If you really care ask Bonus or Jigen or someone to look at the chat logs from back when we had this discussion.

Sure 100FPS isn't a big difference, but it's still a benchmark level that you can judge gaming performance by from different systems. BTW, to break 100FPS in Quake 3 is something that is extremely sad to just happen this day and age. Considering the PC did it how many years ago??

BTW lets look at some other benchmarks:

UT on a Dual 867Mhz G4:

pm867dp_012_l.gif

Return to Castle Wolfenstien

pm867dp_013_l.gif

View the whole review of the system here: <a href="http://www.insidemacgames.com/reviews/view.php?ID=323&Page=1" target="_blank">http://www.insidemacgames.com/reviews/view.php?ID=323&Page=1</a>

Sure that's not the fastest Mac around, it's the lowest end G4 that is currently available, but I can't find any game benchmarks for the newer systems. BTW, I'd like to add that with that machine being the CHEAPEST G4 you can get from Apple, to get it with a GeForce4 Ti w/ 128Mb of VRAM will cost you $2050+Shipping and Tax. My PC that breaks well over 100FPS on Quake3, UT, and RTCW only cost me $800 back in the SUMMER when I put it together, and it is definitely NOT the fastest machine to be had today.

I would love to see the benchmarks on the newest G4 for UT2k3, but that game isn't even out yet on the Mac, and it's been on PC for how long now? It's ok it'll be "playable" at the next Macworld show in SF, expect it to retail about a month after. BTW, compare that to the latest gaming PC that can be made for about HALF of what your high end G4 will. My buddies Athlon XP1600 and a Radeon 9700 Pro can run UT2k3 at over 60FPS running with FULL EFFECTS AND at 1280x1024@32Bit color. Macs couldn't even dream of doing that at their current level.

Facts are facts, Macs are great for 2D illustration and editing, publishing layout, and video editing. However they are big pieces of ASSTASTIC trash when it comes to games and 3D graphics. And to add further insult to injury, the latest 3Ghz P4 with Hyperthreading (it can act like a SMP system with having only 1 processor since it can compute two threads simultaneously) is eating away at the superiority in video editing that Macs have.

You were saying something about being gutted? Look in the mirror.

Peace

They just opened a new mall in St. Louis and it has a Mac store. Went in there last week and there isn't much I didn't drool over. The OS is awesome and the style is very cool. The 22" widescreen LCD is the best monitor I've ever seen. It's incredible. I'm sure the response time is too slow for gaming but it's perfect for anything else.

I've been dissatisfied with PC gaming for a while and if I needed a PC I'd be pretty tempted to go Mac at this point.

The high-end laptop was sweet too!

B (my dual Athlon MP rig will do for now)

That's probably true, because sadly my daddy doesn't have access to firearms. <img src="graemlins/loco.gif" border="0" alt="[Loco]" />

Three guesses where that line came from (more or less).

Look macs are fun machines, but honestly if you're going to argue them as gaming rigs you're just smoking crack.

I'm going to get a iBook or maybe even a Powerbook when I graduate for general web-surfing and mobile use (wireless is nice). I want it cause I like to play w/ Macs, they're fun. But honestly if I didn't have the money, and I could only have 1 platform it'd be the PC. You can do so much more with it, least of all Gaming. I mean you can NOT deny that PC gaming is better on Wintel than it is on the Mac.

Peace

No, I said 100. Remember I was the one who told you to look at the latest MacWorld and at the latest benchmarks for the new G4's...why would I tell you that and say 60FPS when they just broke 100.... <img src="graemlins/shame.gif" border="0" alt="[Shame]" />

Gutted... :p

Truth is, I love Macs, I have two in front of me now, but what JHendrix said is true, they are far from desirable as gaming machines. I don't really know if that is a surprise to anyone though, they really aren't built for that. They are great work horses for what they do, but I agree the PC is more versatile... It is like one of those driving games... The Mac has great speed and power in certain areas, but lacks in others... where as the PC has nice all around levels :)

To be completly honest... I hate OS X, hate it. It ruined the mac in my eyes. Sure I use it on this G4 since it takes advantage of the dual processors, but I really like classic and I will miss it (it will be discontinued and will not work on new macs after June 03). Ah well, I still wouldn't record and mix down on anything else but my mac, but I couldn't throw my PC away either :)

we are currently in the process of upgrading all our computers in the department (i'm a corporate designer) to the new g4s. so far only 2 people have them and they are not having that great of a time with OSX. i tried it out a bit since i should be getting mine configured by IS this week, and some of what i regularly use in the OS9 doesnt even work on OSX
