Riot...
I think the majority of ppl here in the Neo BBS have all played the Contra series including this one. The fact is however, Contra Force was one of the worst games made in the fact that it tacked on the "Contra" name. As a stand alone game called something like *Phoenix Force* or whatnot I believe the game might have fared better. When ppl think "Contra" they don't think of a team of ppl fighitng humans ala' MS 1 and MS4 for Neo resepectively. Thus just like the HK film "Return to a Better Tomorrow" was actually not a bad film in the action genre, it simply bombed when the movie was done under the ABT title, and with no Chow Yun-Fat it became a largely obscure title.
The reason the game isn't mentioned on the timeline for Contra "S.S." is prolly because the game Contra Force was considered a "Gaiden" of sorts and is not recognized. This kind of thing happens all the time, but I will say that the game was worlds better than "Legacy of War" and that other 3D turd.
My problem with "S.S." is that You play a Bill Gryzor from Contra and Super Contra... yet where is Lance? The Contra Spirits game for Super Fami had the decendents of Bill and Lance so how the heck does Bill miracuously come back from cryogenic sleep in this installment? Why not have defrosted him and Lance in part III? You see this is what I mean, the Japanese love to alternate things and leave plot holes a mile wide. Just look at what they did with Macross, when Macross Plus came out (respectively) Macross II was no longer the official sequel, it became a side story. The Macross movie became a movie created by the characters in the TV series as a retelling of what happened in the TV series... and Macross 7, the trash that it is is considered part of the official timeline? You see, none of it makes an iota of sense... but we'll all keep buying it though
