Portable Xbox in Three Years?

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said that it would take his company at least three years to develop a portable console that built on the company's existing Xbox. "It'll be several years, more like three years, before you could do something like an Xbox in a portable factor," Gates explained. He made this statement in an interview with Reuters ahead of a speech at the Consumer Electronics Show.

I guess it all depends on wether the market really needs a more powerfull handheld console.
When you think about it - the Gameboy was the least powerfull system in its day (compared to GameGear and Lynx), but won out because of its games and stupidly long battery life (in comparison with the other 2 power-hungry machines).

So just how much power is the Xbox hardware going to suck up - even when it gets scaled down in 3 years? I think its the most power-consuming games machine on the market at the moment, so battery life is going to be a big issue if they try to develop it.

And will it have a hard-drive?
I hope not - I work on a Technical helpdesk and you would not believe how many calls I get from people whose laptop HDD has crashed on them.

As ever - I'll wat and see (long wait mind you).

Why? Where will you be in three years? Hot date? Dead? Face it, in three years, if a portable system had the graphics of an Xbox, people would go ape shit. Honestly, 3 years is good because by this time, Xbox 2 (or whatever) will be out, and you can play, still pretty cool games, but portable.

It really doesn't matter unless the screen is huge. If by 3 years LCD screens can be sold cheaper, then I guess even Nintendo would offer such.

As it stands, portables suck. The small screens and general lack of a tv output makes them a pain on the eyes. I actually don't mind the tv de advance, which allows you play the GBA on the TV, but it's not a stable product by any means...

Anyways, even with all the great stuff on the GBA that I am interested in buying, I never do. I'm a die hard NGPC man. There were just so many worthwhile games released for the system, and the way I play them (which isn't 24 7, but just once in a while) I'll be satisfied for years.

I think it might be time to ask for some definitions.

Does portable = handheld? The GBA is a handheld. The PS1 is a 'portable' console because of it's size, the screen and battery (probably also the power drain on the battery.

Question is do they mean handheld or do they mean small enough to put in a car.

Because if they mean handheld...that's seriously interesting.

With the Intel xScale chips, I guess in 3 years you can have the power on a portable. And by that time you'll have nanotech drives (at least some sort will be available by then. I forget who is realeasing one first). If they can handle the power consumption and figure out a way to get the graphics and audio hardware down...

Anyway, who gives a fuck. It would just be a portable form of a console for which there is only one really good game: HALO.

Umm... Okay, I've read the excerpt and all it says is that it's possible for them to have a portable system based on XBox technology in 3 years?

No where does it say that MS is planning to release one, or anything. Hell you can just buy a high-end PC laptop and have virtual X-Box portable right now.

If you want something smaller, then just look at the current crop of PDA's and figure how far they'll go in 3 years.

[Edit: Actually from that one line it just says that someone could have a portable system with the same capabilities of an XBox in 3 years.]

Loopz, you really need to stop trying to copy Kid Aphex, and vice-versa. One of you says the xbox sucks the other one copies. I remember a few months ago you had nothing agaisnt the xbox and were championing game like Tony Hawks 4, Mechassualt and Steel Batallion. Now look at ya. Prick.

Well, there's Kabuki Warriors, Capcom Vs. SNK EO, Namco Collection, and some others. More 2D games will show up...it's only a matter of time.

Must be a rare occurence as I've never seen one or heard of anyone else getting one until today.

That's not to say all systems don't have faults...the Gamecube has a nasty tendency to freeze on Rogue Leader...the PS2 has its history of problems...

yup... they will invest 1 BILLION DOLLARS!!!! into the tiny thing. It will lose 177 million every 3 months... but M$ doesn't mind.

It will also be in the form of a PDA (IE Palm.... Campaq Pocket PC), or a Cell phone.
