OK, for everyone out there who plays import games, I have a quick question.

What do I need to do in order to play Mega CDs (the Japanese CDs) on my US Genesis/Sega CD system?

If I buy a Mega CD system and plug it into my US Genesis, can I play Japnese CDs on it, or does it go by the Genesis' Region?

Is there a good emulator that can read Mega/Sega CDs that works with Windows XP? Maybe I'll go that route instead?

Any information is appreciated. I figured I'd ask the experts rather than wasting shitloads of time browsing for the info on the internet.

The Gens emulator is region free, and it runs 99% of games perfectly.

If you need the bios files pm.

As for actual machines, you might as well get a usa sega cd, then a Pro CDX converter cart, it isnt perfect but runs most games.......apparently

Does the Gens emu work with XP? I've tried a couple of emulators to play games off my CDs, but they tend to not work with XP.

Any idea where I can get a Pro CDX converted cart and how much it'll run me?

Thanks!

I couldnt be sure about Gens on XP, ive only used it on '98.

The CDX converter is banned on ebay uk, and is generally hard to come by, but you could gte lucky.

A Japanese Mega CD will Only work with Japanese Mega Drive. The same can be said with a Genesis and Sega CD.

I had both my Genesis and Sega CD modified by Mas Systems back in 1994. So I will only have to select the switch to play either Japanese or English games. And when I switch my Sega CD into Jap mode, I get the WonderMega boot screen which in my opinion is a heck of a lot cooler that the Sega CD boot screen.

You can still try to find the CDX on eBay, or you may contact MAS Systems and check if then can do a convertion with you systems.

I've also found a really cool utility that can convert SOME games from JPN->US/EU as well. I just tried it with the Record of Lodoss War CD I have (JPN CD) and it DID change the region code, so it now works in my US Sega CD!

Pretty cool.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll use the converter program on an ISO and burn my JPN games to another CD. If that doesn't work, I'm just gonna EMU it for now, using my original CDs. If I see a need, maybe at some point I'll buy a Mega Drive and Mega CD?

If you have read the "modded X-Box users rejoice" threads, you'll know that I can't recommend using the X-Box to play these games enough.

I'm using the Neogenesis emulator on that, and it's so easy - pop the original CD in and play. Haven't had 1 problem with the emulation yet, and the video output (I'm running in progressive scan right now) is about 100 times better than my original Genesis/Sega CD combo.

I'm not a big fan of the X-Box, so I have not kept up on the "X-Box fans rejoice" threads. Although, since it sounds like an easy option for running Mega/Sega CD games straight from the CD... hmmm... that's an interesting idea. I'll wait for the X-Box price to drop some more before I pick one up for this purpose though, since I can't think of many/any X-Box games I will want or have wanted.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction!
