This is going to draw some flames, I'm sure.. but I have to get this out.

I'm absolutely S-I-C-K of 95% of the people that play AND discuss Halo. Just fucking fed up.

Why? Well, I'm a huge bungie fan. H-U-G-E. Name the Bungie game, I played it, studied it and destroyed it. Pathways into Darkness? Beat it. Marathon? Played it, beat it, got the T-Shirt. Myth? Dominated it. Oni? Well, wasn't my favorite game of all time.. but I digress.

I'm totally sick of the uninformed "ub3r-c00l" Halo "fanatics" out there that think they know EVERYTHING there is to know about Halo and bungie after playing ONE FUCKING GAME.

Now, this may seem hypocritical, but no, I'm not claiming I'm the know it all god of all things Bungie or anything. I'm a real fan of their stuff and there's a VERY large following of their company that just gets pushed out and called moronic when they try to discuss the Bungie universe with Halo fans.

Pathways-Marathon-Halo. Whether you know it or not, are ALL in the same "gaming universe" and have many correlations and crossovers between them. If you played them and are a student of them, you're used to the Bungie style of smattering clues in the games, their weird references, their obsession with the concept of the "eternal hero", mythology, metaphysics and a bunch of other stuff out there.

I've tried to have some intelligent discussions on Halo's storyline and the Bungie universe.. where everything fits, where they might take the series, conjecture on story elements.. hints on what's really going on... etc. with some people. I've tried to discuss some of this stuff with the general Halo populace that frequents gaming boards and they either think that you're completely bullshitting or tell you that you're flat out wrong.

It really sickens me. No, I'm not asking people to bow down to the people who are die hard Bungie Vid-Boi's or anything. I'm just really angry that these people think they "know it all" and have no fucking clue.

Good example. I tried chiming in on the fact that in the next Halo, there's a lot of signs that Cortana is going "Rampant" and they've dropped some little clues as such. There's a good chance it won't happen, but they left things open and gave some cryptic messages as such. (Rampancy is something in the Bungie universe that AI's go through... think of it as becoming more self-aware and going apeshit over it) I've been told that's the DUMBEST thing they've ever heard and also that I'm making it up.

Unlike most posters on boards, when I reference something, I post the link and/or the pertinent information and I never use the ever present... "My friend told me he knows someone who..." I posted some dialogue to back it up, some links to Marathon story pages, Halo Story pages (the REAL stories, not fanfic.) some BUNGIE EMPLOYEE statements and interviews. I was told it's stupid and ridiculous and probably fake..

Ugh.. I really hate it.

A great analogy. IT's like someone buying the DC port of KOF2k, and from that alone.. professing to be a Guru of all things KOF... and you've had every KOF related game back to FF. You then proceed to talk about the Orochi storyline and they call you a moron.

I know this is coming off as "elitist" and "old skool" and I absolutely hate those things... but it's tiresome and frustrating to hear people who have ZERO grasp of the subject. It's really getting to me. Is there any space in the Halo world for Bungie Junkies like me?

Where there's one, there's probably more.

I liked Marathon too. I liked Halo. I never played Halo LAN-style, I'm sure that'd make me like it more.

On a whole, I'd say I like Bungie games. I'm not a fanatic about them though.

That's the problem. If you're looking for people who are really into them, I'll say the vast majority of them running around on the Internet were brought into Bungie's world by or are only intimately familiar with one game...Halo.

Same thing happens with movies. Some one goes "oh, I'm such a huge Peter Jackson fan. I've seen both Lord of the Rings and The Frighteners a hundred times"...but they've never seen Meet The Feebles.

Problem with games, though, is the viewer can be so short sighted. Not as a slam to the average X-Box user, but by thier own admission/bragging/and non-stop agrandizing...what do they love? what is the X-box so good at? Graphics. Eye Candy. Marathon compared to Halo...no chance.

So while a movie person could go back to a 1980's movie, a lot of video game people can't go back to a mid 1990's game.

And that's a real shame, y'know.

But. Like I said, where there is one, there's others. You just gotta find them.

Yeah, I know... I just had to get it all out. I know it's "just the internet".. hell, I say that to people all the time. There's just a point you get to when it just makes you wanna scream.

I'm desperately hoping for some sort of Marathon remake in the works. Those games are just *too* fucking good to not be enjoyed by the masses. *ESPECIALLY* multiplayer.

Sorry about the recent Marthon kick lately... fucking Durandal... just put me back to sleep already. hehehehe

Hell. Jigen and I were both talking about playing Postal recently. I know where you're coming from.

Actually. I could go for a game of Marathon or Crusader, now that I think about it.

Being strictly a console gamer, I never heard of Bungie until Halo.

Since this is my only point of reference for judging the company and their dedication to quality, I think it's more than enough on it's own to draw the conclusion that Bungie has one of the most magnificent, inventive and talented team of programmers and artists in the business.

Lots of PC games get so much hype and fanfare that console-only gamers find it impossible to escape notice. Since I've never heard of their previous work, Halo must be Bungie's masterpiece and greatest achievement because I doubt they have received such acclaim from a game before, and on a platform that that doesn't have anywhere near the same audience as it's normal target: PC.

I'm sure Loopz will be along shortly to offer some enlightenment on the subject, since there isn't anyone on this forum with the same love of Halo multiplayer I have as he ;) .

Actually, Bungie started out on the Mac didn't they?

I remember playing Marathon 1 & 2 on my Amiga through the FUSION Mac emulator.

However I must state that I don't know the company more then that. However I will state that I tend to enjoy more games that have references to older titles in them. ;)

[Edit: Said HALO instead of Bungie... Eep... Need to get more sleep.]

Hehee... well, one problem was that Pathways, Marathon and Marathon Infinity never saw a PC release.. all MAC. Microsoft picked them up largely for their reputation for their MAC work... that's telling you something about their talent. Halo was ORIGINALLY conceived as a MAC game... funny, in retrospect.

Marathon 2 was released on MAC and PC.

Yeah, Halo is REALLY good.. definitely arguable as their best game.

I dunno.. I'm just disenchanted.

I don't know... it's coming out soon, I know that.

I'm really hoping they work some of the original Halo concepts into the next installments. One of them was that there was no level-by-level stuff.. you were in a MASSIVE online world and you were a marine... and you fought in humungous battles. Never came through. How cool would that be for an online game? A FPS that's a WAR?

*drools*

There's been so many permutations of the Halo project, some of them just incredible.

I remember SyQuest cartridges (waaaay before zip drives) used to come with a free demo of Marathon. I was hooked immediately. We'd get like 7 or 8 of us to play at the ad agency. The Marathon series is one of, if not THE best FPS series ever created. What was so cool was that as you're getting shot, you could run to various recharge stations and power your suit back up. Unfortunately, there'd always be 2 or 3 snipers waiting for you.

It was almost finished for PC when they decided to port what they had to the XBox, and they ended up enhancing the graphics a fair bit in the process. There is a great interview with Bungie in a couple-year-old issue of NextGen magazine where they discuss developing Halo.

The Myth games are a lot of fun. Real time strategy with a fantasy perspective...good stuff.

There are some fairly cheap Myth collections out there now in the budget bins...worth checking out.

I liked the Myth games as well. Halo I must have played at least for several months and I'll be waiting for Halo2 to be released later this year as well.

So far Bungie has done very well with Halo and I wish it could of been on the PC online.

There never was a PC version before Bungie was bought by Microsoft. Halo was shown at a couple MacWorlds (which subsequently made all the attendees wet their pants). The amazing thing was (if I remember correctly) this was back when Macs didn't have any true 3D cards, it was all being rendered by the processor.

Ahh, Marathon 2 and Infinity, great games. One game was something called Minotaur that I had. It was an AppleTalk network game where you ran around in a maze in an RPG fashion. Speaking of AppleTalk, my brother and I used to play Armor Alley on our home AppleTalk network...(remember Rescue Raiders?) :)

Not sure why though. Oni was servicable at best. Noting spectacular but fairly solid stuff.
Just wish there was a little more detail to those buildings and furniture.

I've used to own a Mac in the late 1990's, so of course I'm a huge BUNGIE fan.

I've played Minotaur, Pathways Into Darkness (the PowerPC enhanced release) and was a HUGE fan of Myth 1 and II (there weren't many good games for the Mac back then, so Myth was played to death!!). In fact, some of you may remember me on bungie.net playing Myth...my user account was "BOGDAN"! I wasn't a big fan of Oni and Myth III just wasn't the same (it wasn't even made by Bungie!).

I still remember seeing the early Halo shots when it was still a Mac-only game. I didn't think much of it back then, but what a great game it turned out to be!

When I heard that Bungie was acquired by MICROSOFT for XBOX development, I was elated! For once, this small publisher could publish their games on a platform that would experience more widespread distribution, and when I heard their first project was HALO, I was even more grateful for MICROSOFT's brilliant strategy!

Maybe someday we'll see a Myth game on the XBOX! They saw fit to include a short Myth track as a secret in Halo, so anything is possible!!!
