one of my teachers asked me for the same thing and my answer was:

"it depends on your taste"

really. if he is buying the game for his kid, I can mention some nice titles for PS2 and GC (I don't own an XBox so you should ask someone else about it):

PS2:

-Jak and Daxter
-Ratchet and Clank
-Need for Speed HP 2
-Test Drive Off Road
-Dragon Ball Z
-Kingdom Hearts
-Maximo
-Klona 2
-Tekken 4
-crazy taxi
-Dynasty warrior 3
-Parappa the rapper
-Splash Down

-------------------------------------------------

GC:

-Mario Party 4
-Super Mario Sunshine
-Monkey Ball 2
-Super Smash Brothers
-Zelda (coming soon)

-------------------------------------------------

Both:

-NBA streets
-Sega Soccer Slam
-SSX tricky
-Pac Man World 2

No GC use the mini-DVD disks. I think the Panasonic Q do maybe.

No the GC doesn't play back DVD's. Then again the quality of DVD play back from the XBox and PS2 isn't all that spectacular. Granted, I have not seen the XBox's DVD capability first hand, so I'm going by

What's the size of their television? On larger screen televisions, apparently the PS2's DVD playback will have artifacts around the black areas. (I haven't noticed them when playing on a small 14'' TV. :p )

X Box is one the best DVD players (under $200.00) on the market today. But PS2 is really bad tought! Also how old is the kid? If he's older than 10 he might get bored with the Gamecube's games to choose from fast.

Here's the truth: you wont notice much difference in the quality of most dvd players unless you have a really good TV. This is true of the PS2 and Xbox. Any DVD player is far superior in quality to a VCD or regular VHS, fact.

Also, if this is for a kid, I'd go for the GC. Nintendo make kid-friendly games with kid-friendly control systems. You know, the BIG green button does everything.

However, the PS2 is waaaay more street-cred. If the kid doesn't want get bullied in the schoolyard, he'd better have Vice City. Depends how old he is.

The Xbox is an OK DVD player (the idea that any DVD player is better than any VHS is nonsense though). It has very few strong games though. It has a very small presence in the Far East, apparently finding shops that sell the games can be difficult in Japan.

The Cube only plays DVDs in its Qube version. There is a new version of this coming soon which may mean that prices on the old ones drop. It has a solid range of good games with more good ones on the horizon, it is my most played machine at the momment.

The PS2 plays DVDs but not well. Its the most expensive, the least graphically and sonically impressive and has the most games. Many of them are unimpressive but you can find a playable version of most things on it.

On a desert island I'd hope a Cube was washed up next to me.

Well i'd go for xbox

depends what games the lad likes. If he was anything like me growing up he'd want his share of violence and fun.

The xbox dvd player is of a very high quality and has true DD5.1 support, also there is no pause when changing layers.

I'd say get the Xbox Sega GT/JSRF pack (every kid loves JSRF, and sega gt is a tight racer), you don't have to arse around with memory cards and you get the 'S' pad which is great for small hands.

Even the worlds cheapest no-name DVD players (such as the APEX players sold by Future Shop for like $89 Canadian) will offer a better picture than even an SVHS VCR.

You would put a high quality VCR through an RGB output though.

Just for clarification. A $3,000 VCR will look and sound a lot better than a $75 DVD. That said the $75 DVD will probably look better than a $75 VCR. Getting a DVD is not neccessarily such an important thing if your VCR is up to scratch.

Are you sure you're not talking about Super VHS players? I said REGULAR VHS. Super VHS is twice the quality of regulr VHS, despite using exactly the same tapes. However, DVD is still better quality. Fact.

Well, DVD has the higher potential for better quality. If your source material is crap, and the compression algorithm are crap, you can get a much worse signal. ;)

I've got DVD's with tape rolls and compression artifacts that not even the best players in history will fix it up.

Totally...you're right there. If the kid is 9, GC all the way. Nintendo games might be suitable for all ages, but they have the market cornered on user-friendly software & hardware.
