Back when it first came out I tried but got so pissed I quit. Now all these years later after buying a mint Japanese version for my new Mega Jet... I beat it! GAWD I'm Giddy! Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

Now I can brag about...

Contra/Gryzor (Arcade, PCB, Famicom/NES))
Super Contra (Arcade, IBM/Tandy, MAME, Famicom/NES)
Contra Force (Famicom/NES)
Operation Contra (Gameboy)
Contra HardCorps (Mega Drive/Genesis)

now I have only to beat...
----------------------------------
Contra Spirits (Super Famicom/SNES)
Contra "SS"
-----------------------------------

MAN I'm Pumped!

Congratulations, which character and which path did you take?

*Possible spoilers*

I know how you feel. I played nothing but that game for a week straight, and even though I got my ass kicked left and right, I still wanted to play! Eventually I was able to finish 3 out of 4 paths with Ray. I've also gotten the "bad ending", which may be the "secret ending" I've seen mentioned, although I'm not certain because I've never looked at a FAQ for the game.

I'll definitely be playing the game more in the future. So many ways to play it; that's why it's my favorite. :)

On a side note, I think that Shattered Soldier is considerably more difficult. Once you play enough, stages 1-5 are a breeze, but Stage 6 is always positively insane. It's so bad it's sick.

Hey man, congrats, that's really something to brag about!

I love this game, but I only finished it once in all those years, it's fukn hard, just like Shadow Dancer.

the secret ending is hilarious.....
you'll know if you find the hidden path for this....
i stumbled upon it accidentally. If you go thru the hidden route, then you can beat the game really quick.

Well since it's the Japanese version that I beat I couldn't read any of the storyline dialogue between the characters or know what I was selecting.

I started off with Sheena, then played as Ray, then the Wolf Guy and beat the game with Sheena. After stage one I choose a path that had me on a Rocket Bike, then I fought a boss that had MAD rotation/scaling where you're running away from a boss... Later I chose I believe the section option, where I fought some boss that transformed into different signs of the Zodiac, then odd geometric shapes. Anyhow I ended up continuing a butt load of times but fought some weird Mad Scientist dude in a lab (kind of reminded me of Cyberlip with all the biotech stuff) and finally had to kill the proverbial heart... only to learn that some cool looking Cyberpunk dude got away on a Helo, then credits rolled. I don't know how many possible endings the game has but I was happy last night just to have beat it!

wow........Japanese version?
JPN version is quite expensive and that's why I only have US version. Well, US version doesn't have life bar which makes it imperfect

Yeah the game sports a 3-hit life bar just like the new "SS" Contra for PS2, versus the American version that's the classic one hit your dead. Still even with the 3 hit thing the game is a bitch and a half. I'm going to try the other routes mentioned in here. And yeah, the JPN version is expensvie, but it was mint... Heck it's brand new for all purposes and it was worth every penny!

What? You can take three hits before you die in the Japanese verison? In that case, the game should be relatively easy...

Not really man... I still had to continue and restart whole stages 68 times before I beat the game. Just imagine what Contra "SS" is today but made with the hit meter back in '94. True it's not the one-hit you're out of the Genesis, but beating the Mega Drive version still takes luck, skill and a lot of patience.

68 times? What the hell? In the US version, you have only 5 continues, maybe less, I can't remember... do you have more than one life per credit in the Japanese game?

Maybe the version is more difficult in other ways, I don't know. But I have more of a hard time finishing the "Hard" mode of Contra III on SNES (on which I can get only to the level 5 boss) or finishing Stage 7 of Shattered Soldier (which I've never seen) than I do finishing Hard Corps. And believe me, I've played all three of them quite a bit.

Are you trying to lessen my giddiness with having finally beat this game or what? Not going to work if thats the case... I damn near broke the Mega Jet I just got at one point. But yeah, you get 3 lives per gaming cycle w. 3 hit points per man. The difficulty is nuts though don't kid yourself, and the fact that I don't know what's going on doesn't help matters any. As for Contra Spirits for Super Fami... that game still has me seeing red but it's my next challenge, I'm saving Contra "SS" for last.

THE QUEST FOR FREEDOM CONTINUES...

Yeah, you're right... I suppose I'd have to play the Japanese version to make a fair comparison. I'll shut up now. ;)
