In an article on the forthcoming GBA-SP, 'Spong' have said the following:

If this is to be believed, then mentioning it at the unveiling of Nintendo's new baby is truly a gaff worthy of Pretendo of Europe.
"Here's our new console! We're expecting something similar from Sony any day, so if you're a Sony fan then just wait!"

With no official word from Sony on the persistant handheld rumours, it must fill their little hearts with joy to have Nintendo sight them as the reason for the GBA2 in front of Europe's press.

Maybe it will be a moblie phone by Ericson? (Sony own them now).

I hope the new Sny conlse will have 3d graphics, PSX style, and that Tony Hawk is released on it.... I can't stand the GBA version...

you can't because it's not even unoffical or a rumor yet. This is just even partially believeable only if the person who wrote this is from washington, as there is no other nintendo headquarters. I've heard too much crappy rumors lately with nothing as the results, just wasted time. I heard about a back-lit gba coming out 2 years ago, and this is the time the come around to it, and it's not even back lit it's frontlit! <img src="graemlins/angry.gif" border="0" alt="[Angry]" />

I'd use it if they put the games on mini-disc. Before you scoff at the idea consider this. The cd's inside would be mint eternally. and it will give more space of corse

Sony won't get my money on no Goddamned portable system... NO WAY! It's bad enough I have to buy another PS2 just so I can quit bothering my friend to play my copy of Contra "SS". Besides there's no way anyone is going to beat Nintendo in this market... waaaay to big a head start, although Zorro's idea of mini-discs does seem neat within itself.

I also had to play on my friend's system to get shattered soldier to work, I just returned it because he lives in a different area, then I got a gba. Contra was an aewsome game though. And the mini-disc idea was going to be passed from me to snk. Me and my friend were sketching out a console for them before they went under. We wanted them to design a new semi-portable

I'd like to think they could do something with the MiniDisc media technology and apply it to portable gaming. Hell, make em read only and make the Memory Stick your memory card for the unit :p .

Heh, I'd be happy with just a really high capacity clip-on battery pack for the PSOne :)

Any Sony handheld would probably be PSX based as they've got the whole thing down to one chip (IOP). Just be cart or minidisk based.

Ports would be easy too, as it would just be a case of pressing/burning to different media ;) and perhaps putting in some extras here and there.

Actually Sony already has protables they are called Clie's.

The problem with Mini disc is that you have to have a motor, on top of that you have to have the now standard backlit, and to really compete with a handheld that already has everything, you have to have something new (vastly superior graphics) and trying to manufacture, and market something so costly against something like the GBA just isn't a smart idea. Not to mention battery life, you would have to have a nice big lithium ion battery to support a good amount of time when you have a backlit screen and motor for mini disc and such. Sony won't try to break into the Gameboy market during the life cycle of the GBA, maybe when Nintendo releases their next graphically upgraded GB system or something Sony would try to hop into it before they get it out.

Maybe it's just the much vaunted Red Jade unit that was making the marketing rounds a few months ago. I think they had some PSone games running on it for demo purposes... maybe they locked Sony up?

However...

Sony and Microsoft have both openly stated in the last year they have no intentions of making inroads into the handheld gaming area. It may have changed, but really.. there's a *lot* of uphill fighting they'll have to do to be able to do it. Face it, so many other companies that were much more able at gaming made stabs at the market and went down hard. I don't think that is lost on Microsoft or Sony. Sony has the inherent advantage right now over everyone in the console market with the PS2... and knowing them to be a very shrewd company.. I don't see them taking on Nintendo right now in an absolutely stone cold lock.. loss. It would only look bad for them.

Then again we said that when the first Playstation rumors were making the rounds.

I may be wrong.. stranger things have happened.

That would probably be the nail in the coffin for Big N, though. If they got swept out of handheld gaming and take that crown of second in the console wars... eek. I know they're not going anywhere soon, but it could be the beginning of a long downward spiral. (see also Sega)

The stuipd thing is... the next thing you will see is Xbox trying to get into the portable market (basically a palm lol). They will invest 1 billion for that too....

but... honestly.... i don't think Sony has a chance...especially if the GBA2 can play all the old GB, GBC, GBA games PLUS the new games... you just cannot beat that. 1 system.. you can play ALL games.
