Fuck, that is awesome.

Im happy with my ibook though. I cant seem to justify spending that much on a computer. Apple laptops are the way to go regardless.

I want to get an iBook really bad but the $1600 pricetag is a little steep, I dunno, maybe after a price drop or something.

I for one love MACS, it's just that almost no one I personally know outside of indie filmmakers own one, thus it be impractical for me to buy one and then have to lug it around, and even a portable wouldn't do me much good... but alas I know that to finally get some projects that I've had on the back burner I'll be needing one with all the DIY editing equipment to boot.

That looks super-sweet.

Of course, this happens the week after I get one (combination Bday/Xmas present).

Also, anyone who knows/cares:

I wish to install an Airport card. Should I do it myself and risk a $2000 laptop or send it to a place that charges $80/hour + parts? It's basically a matter of taking out the battery and removing the bottom + 7 screws, so...

What ibook did you buy, the airport installs under the keyboard! It is about a 1 minute install. Basicly there is an internal PCMCIA slot with a single attena wire. Unlatch the antena and plug it into the airport card, then slide the card into the slot... done. Of course power must be off, but you knew that I am sure.

Oh, I got the Titanium G4/667 actually. I have to take out the screws in the exact order with a Torx T-8 screwdriver.

Sorry: I also have to take off the bottom and put it back on, and with laptops, it's usually best to leave such things to pros. With that, I'm going to send it to a store I live near. It'll cost about $80/hr, but at least they won't make a mess of things. (And plus, it shouldn't take much more than an hour)

Great mumbley... your right!

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88058&SaveKCWindowURL=http%3A%2F%2Fkbase.info.apple.com%2Fcgi-bin%2FWebObjects%2Fkbase.woa%2Fwa%2%20F%2 0SaveKCToHomePage&searchMode=Assisted&kbhost=kbase.info.apple.com&showButton=false&randomValue=100&showSurvey=false&sessionID=anonymous|161419928

Still it sounds pretty simple to me, airport is user installable, bring it in if you want to, but I can't see you paying money to install a PCMCIA card! I really think it is easier than you think. I have never installed one in a Ti, I really don't like them and have only used them for a few hours at work... I am all about the iBooks, they are so small and that less scratchable white :) But, I will grab a Ti today and install a card just to see what it is like... I don't think you would have any problem though,

The even worse thing here is you bury a wireless PCMCIA card in the middle of a metal box and only give it one antena to broadcast with. Atleast with IBM's laptops that have embedded wireless they put a dual antenna in the lid around the display.

And I really doubt you will get 54MegB wireless without Apples expensive base station using their propritary format. The current wireless is maxed around 11Mb right now I believe.

But it does look nice!!

The Ti is not a metal case.. it is more plastic and cheap aluminum (inferior metal). Plus... um... Metal is an antena, in case you didn't know :) Thats what they are made out of and is highly conductive. Plus, this is the only mac that uses this install method, most install right under the keyboard and hook into an antena that runs the course of the display. Still, the external cards with the big antenas are better... I get much better signal with a Farllon card then I ever get with airport. As for the 54Mb, yes you need a new base station, 802.11B is only 11Mb, so you would need the new airport base station.

Actully mister smart man metal even cheap aluminu will block RF especially when it is a low power signal. Metal is only an antena when it is hooked to a signal source and shaped to broadcast the signal correctly. And I seriously doubt they have the antena for that card bonded to the case. You can spend a life time just studing how to design antena's there guy. I know that that is the only Mac to use the internal install design. And the weak signal you get because of it is why there is a group of people working to make drivers for the Mac to use the external cards so they can get better reception.

Oh yeah for future referance I have spent the last 14 years working on RF products ranging from high powered applications like radar to low powered applications used in set top boxes (thats cable/satalite boxes). So I might have some what of a clue what the hell I'm talking about.
