According to http://www.centralparkmedia.com , this publisher published 12 volumes of Legend of the Overfiend, and 3 volumes of Return of the Chojin. Is that all that was published in US? Does the story end there, or are there more volumes in Japan unpublished?

Try Yahoo Groups, and run a search on comics, or adult comics. Join a few of them, and ask around. I've had to resort to this in the past for some things I wanted to find out.

Wish I could help you on your question. I like to think I know a bit about comics, but Urotsukidoji was never really my cup of tea.

I can remember going to a theatre and seeing this for the first time. I had some lady sitting next to me, and before it started, she asks: "Is this cartoon supposed to be violent?"

I hadn't heard or seen anything on it before, so I answer: "Yeah, so I'm told."

"I find that hard to believe. Who ever heard of a violent cartoon?"

Two hours or so of mutilations, rapes, gratuitous sex and phallic things out the wazoo, the lights came back on in the theatre, and Sally Soccermom just sat staring at the screen as the credits rolled. She looks up feebily: "H-have a good night..."

I smiled at her and left. I wonder if the old girl's still in counseling to this day... tickled

Thanks, I'll give a try later, I've never used any of these groups before.

So was the movie shown in theatres in US? Here in Spain it only appeared in video format, at the beginning of the manga boom in 1993. The videoclubs put it in the cartoons section, so some parents rented it for their children and were very upset, even though it specifically said in the case it was only for adults...

Unfortunately the comics were never published here, although I think they were in France and Italy. I managed to download scans of the 12 volumes first English serie, and I'm looking for more, either in paper or scanned. They are VERY different from the movie.

Yeah, the movie was shown here in the states in theatres, but not your big mainstream theatres, at least to my knowledge. At the time I saw it, it played at a theatre here in town known as The Vogue, a somewhat small artsy theatre in the more leftist and white collar east end of town.

You mentioning the debacle with the video release happened here in town too. There was a Suncoast store in the mall that had it down on the rack with the rest of the anime they were just starting to sell at the time. I tried to warn the clerk about it, since I'd seen it at the theatre, and he brushed off my comment. I found out about a week later they had some parents up there ready to hang somebody, so they moved it higher up on the rack and put a warning label on that particular shelf. I wanted so bad to say "I told you so!" to that same clerk, but didn't. Oh well...

I can imagine the comics were a lot different than the movie, and I'd figure probably better, at least story-wise. I don't know what made me not check it out further. If I remember right, at the time I had so many other titles draining my wallet I didn't gamble on other titles too much.

You ever see a comic called Faust? If you liked Urotsukidoji, you'll probably dig this too.

Yeah, it was uncensored. And to be quite honest, parts of it shocked my "jaded to it all" ass too, only I didn't sit and stammer when it was over like the Soccermom. :D

I guess the old girl deserves credit for watching a "cartoon" at the theatres that wasn't Disney or a Disney rip-off though. I just hope Urotsukidoji didn't put such a bad taste in her mouth that she stopped viewing anime all together.

Yes, the comics are very different, they are even more violent and sexual graphically, and the characters personalitites are different too. Akemi is a horney-ball, Amano Jyaku (I adapted this name to my lanaguage, Catalan, where "y" and "k" don't exist) is much more a bad guy, Megumi is another bitch, etc... The problem is that the part of the movie that impressed me the most was the ending, and the comics I read don't reach that, so I'm very pissed  .

Usually, when a comic or a book is very long in pages the movie has to be different by force, as it is just a condensed summary of it. Akira anybody?

Here in Spain very few anime movies are displayed in theatres, only the big ones like Akira, the Miyazaki's (Porco Rosso, Monoke, Spirited Away) and the ones for children (Doraemon, Shin Chan, etc.). The others go directly on VHS/DVD. Hopefully you can also watch quite a lot in TV, specially series.

About Faust, I saw the movie based in that comic, as it was filmed in my city, Barcelona, and it was terrible... angry I'm sure the comics are much better.

You're 110% correct, Faust the movie was an atrocity. I hope somebody somewhere lost their ass in deciding to go ahead and make a turd like that.

You're right, the comics are leaps and bounds above the movie. You really should look into Faust and try to erase that shitbag of a movie from your memory with the coolness of the comics.

Here in America, Faust got to be such an underground sensation, that a literal truckload of "me-too" comics tried to ride the gravy train. If you see anything other than Faust on the rack, like Blood Reign, Razor, Clown Shock, etc, stay far away from them because they all suck and it may ruin your image even further of Faust before you can give it a chance.
