Hello,

Can someone explain to me where does the paticular music sound in the Neo Geo games comes from ? Generally the games have like an orgue like sound (Ex: Art of Fighting 2, Kizuna Encounter, etc.)
Does it come from the Hardware ot the Software ?

With its 15-channel Yamaha 2610 sound chip, the Neo can replay samples (7 channels) and synthesized FM sounds (4 channels). The Yamaha chip has an inbuild FM synth that can be fed with so-called patch data to create a virtual instrument by tweaking several audio parameters (ADSR curves, LFO rates, modulation sources/targets, etc.), just like you would create a new sound/patch on a synthesizer keyboard.

This way, a game music composer can create instruments that sound like strings, flutes or guitars without having to use memory-eating samples. A good example for a pure FM sound would be the Neo Geo jingle you hear when switching on your machine.

This technique (combination of samples and synthetical sounds) was very common with 16Bit consoles.

So it's software then ?

Thancks for the reply.
The sound is produced by the sound chip, which is hardware. The sound chip is controlled thru software.

So the sound are technically generated by the hardware or are samples played from the cart. So the sound is mixed and produced by hardware.

I would think that the patterns necessary to make the artificial FM synthesis is stored in software.

Also the software itself generates the calls to these FM patterns. The hardware reproduces the FM patterns as per software. I would then guess a 1 bit DAC(a guess) converts the new software/hardware synthesized digital codes into audible tones and sounds, known as music and gunshots, punches, etc.

So where does the orgue like sound come from then ? I heard that the conversions on other consoles never have the same sound than the Neo Geo version.
