I alway prefer McAfee over Norton. At the moment, I use McAfee Virus Scan/Firewall Online. The downside, I have to pay a annual fee for each.

same for Norton Kaedas.

I love Norton better..... Macafee SCREWED UP my system before. I do not know how good the newer versions are, but it was bad enough that I will never touch macafee again.

Mcafee corp edition. The antivirus without all the fluff and junk you don't need. Highly recommend over Norton any day of the week. THe corp version is only availiable if you purchase multiple copies. I happen to have one that does not expire.

What will kill you is seeing if both companies are owned by the same organization...!?!?

I myself use both (Norton at work and McAffee at home). I'd have to say that I prefer McAffee.

Norton by a long shot. McAfee is in third place on my list behind Trend.

Norton may have extra stuff you don't need, but if you want the BEST protection available Norton is the only choice.

I run Norton on every enterprise rollout I do. The fluff isn't "fluff" it's extra protection.

On the other hand DO NOT use their personal firewall. It will KILL your speed.

Are you talking for your home PC? Neither. I've been online for two years with a cable modem (constantly connected) and four years prior to that on a dial up. I can count the number of virii I've recieved on one hand and each time it was because of my own stupidity (I corrected the problems shortly after).

All I use now is ZoneAlarm firewall (free download) and if I'm up to it I use Trend's free online virus scan. I feel safe, just know how to run your computer.

Besides, all that virus crap you run eats mad resources.

Definitely true, I found that out the hard way.

The best combo I've found for high-speed connections is Norton with ZoneAlarm. Works like gangbusters. :D

These days I just run Linux to keep from getting Virus infections. But when I use to run Windows I always used McAfee.

Norton both for mac and pc. Funny thing is I've never encountered problems with Norton firewall on my mac...

Not sure if this is going to be of help...

At home I use: http://www.free-av.com/ . It's always being updated with is good, but generally an update means downloading the installer and reinstalling. Can't complain though. It did find a virus hanging around.

Make sure you pick up Ad-Aware too. ;)

At the office, we switched from McAffee to eTrust Antivirus.

Because of security issues, our antivirus software is setup to scan ALL files. It was destroying our system performance. It took 5 to 10 minutes to compile software (it normally took us about 2 minutes.) Playing DVD's was a big pain on the system as well.

eTrust seems to be a lot more efficient. Compiles take a little over 2 minutes (maybe 3 tops). I haven't noticed problems with DVD playing so it's generally benign.

I have a Q, I have norton virus and personal Firewall, but I have never noticed the speed go down with my Cable, but then again I have had it from day one, also I need it cause I try to get invaded nearly every day( Kazza), but how much does it get slowed down by?

I had McAfee pre-installed on my PC and was told by the Sony technical support person to remove it because all the problems I was getting from setting up printers, installing a graphics card, etc, were because McAfee blows up whenever it sees something it doesn't understand.

50% at least.

Yeah, it's THAT bad. It works, though.. I'll give 'em that.

The problem is they do Dynamic Packet Filtering, examination and everything else.. so it's naturally going to slow everything up... just not THAT much.

If you have a residential cable modem, your built in firewall should be adequate. (really) I use linux for my web/file hosting to clients, so I'm pretty impervious there.. and my internal router has a 'wall up to pretty much scoop up the rest.

In all honesty.. the built in security of your provider and router should be enough. (I'm on comcast and I do ethical hacking.. they have everything pretty well covered, script kiddie wise) If someone is good enough to get into your system with the built in stuff, they'd probably get in with even more security.

Just be smart and cautious and you will be fine. That means little-no file sharing.. turning off a lot of windows' native flaws (preview email, processing VB files), filter your email and turn off your cable modem when it's not in use.

Yep, that's what soured my relationship with McAfee. I used to think they were the shit, but now they're just...well...shit.

I really don't have any recommendations, but I had mcafee on my other PS and it slowed everything WAY down. ever since then I've been reluctant to install another anti-virus program on another pc

so instead of firewll get what ? zonealarm is that good and which make( sorry I am not in expert in computers) and I heard that it is easy to get into, is this true. The reason I am asking is beacuse I can still download from Kazza at 60 k a second BUT with a 56 k modem only 5 k a second

Are you saying you don't have any antivirus software?
Do you have a link for ZoneAlarm?

It looks like it's a 50/50 split between VirusScan and AntiVirus...
I really hoped that there would be a clearly better one. :(
