I have two versions of Capcom MERCS (MERCS II): Genesis and Saturn.

I like Genesis version better than Saturn one is because Genesis has one extra mode: Original.

If you are a hardcore gamer then you'll find out that Level 1 in MERCS has been copied and used by other companies. The best example is Saurus' Shock Troopers, and that is Neo Geo game

Yeah. When I played Mercs on Genesis for the first time, I was surprised about the similarity to Shock Troopers. Too bad I had not chance so far to try the SAT version.

The Genesis version is my fav. I still play this great game once or twice a week, can't get enough of it!

You can get Saturn/PS version of Capcom Generation 4 (MERCS) new for around $30 or less anywhere.

I strongly suggest you to pick one up and compare it with Genesis version.

Sega of Europe also released Master System version of MERCS and I've never played it.

MERCS is awesome !

BTW, how's shock troopers compares to MERCS?
Tell me about it because I've never played ST before

You're right LS, MERCS is a great game!! I have the Genesis version, Saturn version (which as you said is on Capcom Generations 4), and the full blown original MERCS arcade cabinet!! The cabinet I got for only $300 complete, 25" vertical screen, but needs a cap kit installed because it has a "squeezed" area on the monitor. Overall its a really fun game, and the arcade PCBs are very common and very cheap (you can get MERCS arcade boards for around $25, and they don't have suicide batteries like later Capcom games).

Hm, I should check out the SAT version as well. Can't get enough of this game!

Of course the gfx of ST is better than the Genesis-MERCS, and in ST there are more (and bigger) enemies, but I still prefer MERCS, prolly because it's closer to Commando, which I loved to bits. However, the first three end bosses of Mercs could be a little more demanding.

The arcade version of Mercs is graphically up to par with the Neo ST IMO. I was looking for a Mercs pcb, but sadly couldn't find one, at least not for a reasonable price...

MERCS all the way!

Well, the SMS version isn't that good IMO, it has sloppy controls and lots of slowdowns.

Telegames (and others) sell it for about $20 (too much).

Wow.....$300 is a very good price

I wish I have big house so I can collect the following Capcom arcade games:

MERCS II
19XX (damn that suicide battery)
Varth (no idea if it has suicide battery)
Warriors of Fate 1 & 2 (I have PS version of WOF 2 but still )
Dungeon & Dragon 1 & 2 (Saturn version is good but I hate slowdown and loading time...)

I don't have Varth but I wish I can have arcade cab.

Varth has over 30 + levels but you'll see the same enemies in the later levels over and over.

Varth isn't Capcom's first game......
I don't even know what's the first Capcom game......

LS, here is a perfect site for Capcom games, has tons of details about all of them:
http://www.arcadeflyers.com/strider/capcom_list.html

I've been to this site many many times, covers detailed specs about all the games including which ones have suicide batteries, dip settings, etc. GREAT site!!!!

Yeah, Mercs is awesome.

I've got the PS Capcom Generations version.

Commando is still a bloody good game, and Gun Smoke is tough as fuck.

What's Mercs 2?

Mercs is the sequel to Commando. In Japan the full game title was Commando 2 - Mercs.

chimpmeister, thanks for the info.
I'll check it out for sure.

Here's the funny part:

In US, we have MERCS for Genesis. But MERCS is actually MERCS II in Japan. Look carefully on the title screen when you play Capcom Generation 4 disc and you'll see it says MERCS II.

Even JPN version of MERCS says MERCS II

I have a Genesis 1 with US/JAP switch, so I can "swap" to both versions. The title screens show MERCS in US and MERCS II in JAP version, too.

Commando's legacy can be seen on many spots in MERCS, for example in the death anim frames of enemy soldiers.

Takumaji, good job!

I don't like Commando that much but I used to play it at local arcade during high school year.....

Shock Troopers = way better than MERCS

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy MERCS a lot. In fact I've finished the arcade version on one credit with a maxed-out score of 999,999. But once you've played it through a few times, or in my case, played it enough to finish it on one credit... that's it... Shock Troopers on the other hand has oodles of replay value, and I'm still finding new ways to get high scores on that game.

Oh, and the level you said was "copied" off MERCS is the first level on the Mountain route... you're probably referring to fighting that jet at the edge of a cliff. That's not even the main boss of the level. What else was copied? How can you claim it's a copy when you haven't played the game?

Oh, c'mon. I saw the screenshot of Shock Troopers and I was shock. That airplane fighting is almost identical to Capcom MERCS.

I did a thread regarding Shock Troopers and MERCS and even showed photos side-by-side earlier this year....

Capcom did MERCS in 90/91 and Shock Troopers was out in 1997.......

You tell me Saurus didn't copy it from Capcom......

Ahem. You said:

Are those screenshots similar? Yes, I'm not denying that. What I'm saying is that the jet you see in the Shock Troopers pic is just a sub-boss, it's not the end-of-level boss like it is in MERCS. Do you know what the rest of Stage 1 on the Mountain route of Shock Troopers is like? There's a section that scrolls from left to right on a bridge, with enemies on a mountain across from you shooting at you. There's also some tanks up there that attack you... do you remember either of these occuring on Stage 1 of Mercs?

Also keep in mind that Shock Troopers has a total of 17 different levels in the game, so some overlap with other games was inevitable. Oh wait, you didn't know that because you haven't played it!

BBH, I agree that Shock Troopers is a better game than MERCS. It is truly a masterpiece action/platform shooter for the Neo, with great hand-drawn graphics and even excellent music!! Both games are excellent, but Shock Troopers is certainly better . . . too bad Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad was such a disappointment, it really didn't measure up to the original at all!!

I havent played ST1, but I have the 2nd.
I would say Mercs 2 is 10 times better than ST2

This game is one of my all-time favorite.
If anyone has the Japanese version for sale (orange), please let me know.
