Wrong numbers from strangers.
Prank phone calls.
Late-night radio call in shows.
Internet Message boards.
Chat Rooms.
Old recorded messages on tape.
Wire Taps.

Nothing in common at first glance, right?
For some reason, this stuff has always both fascinated me, and creeped me out at the same time.

It kind of reminds me of the title of an old Meat Beat Manifesto song, "Phone Calls from the Dead." Pair that with scenes from other places in the media, such as that old G.I.Joe episode I will never forget ("De Viper"), Metal Gear Solid (Deep Throat's strange codec calls), Shenmue II's wire-taps, and you have a menacing, terrifying aura of tension in every situation.

One movie that I think played off of this invisible tension very well was Joy Ride. Anybody see that movie?

Somehow, tho, I don't think any thing in the media has truly played off of this to the fullest.

(Listening to MBM's "Phone calls from the Dead" Hmmm..) "A phone call in the middle of the night means bad news..." Come to think of it, usually if a guy gets a call in the middle of the night, it means some one has passed away..Hmm.. Now this song doesn't seem so weird after all.

There's just something so weird -and so alluring- about indirect communication.

Well, thanks for reading my late-night ramblings. Hope it gave you something to think about.

You really should Check out "Don't Be Afraid" By Kurt Harlands Information Society. It's not like the old INSOC stuff. It is very unique and dark (includes Raziel's theme). He also did the ST to Soul Reaver 1 & 2, which explains "Ozar Midrashim", or, "Raziel's Theme" if you will. The song "Empty" is al about not being able to sleep. I know what it's like, as you know. Check it out though. It's a great collection of "Dark Themes" for those parts of our lives that we can't seem to reconcile with.
