I saw Rushmore, I liked Rushmore.
I saw the preview for Wes Anderson's next flick The Royal Tenenbaums, and hoped it would be able to match the wit and originality of his previous movie (the preview certainly was promising).
I saw it this evening.
The Royal Tenenbaums surpassed my expectations. Its very, very well crafted. Full of excellent visuals and mise-en-scene (some of the best I've seen in a while) that load the movie with extra humor and information. The soundtrack (like Rushmore) is well matched and sets the tone well (lots of great 70's-ish music).
The story is terrific. The characters, all funny, all witty, all quirky are developed evenly and with style. Where Rushmore had Max Fischer, The Royal Tenenbaums has an array of equally involving, flawed personalities (crowned by Gene Hackman). The cast adds so much: Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Owen & Luke Wilson, Danny Glover, Anjelica Huston, Bill Murray... all incredible. There's gotta be a nomination in there somewhere...
I hate giving away plot, so I'll save it for you to discover on your own (hopefully from watching it). It opens with a sharp, quick, very funny series of clips about all the characters, their past lives, and their current situation. Its so brisk and humorous you almost loose the desire for a plot. Fortunately, Anderson doesn't deny the viewers a worthy story for his (and co-writer Owen Wilson's) characters. Bringing in drama without ever loosing sight of the dark wit. I'm amazed it was able to blend the two so well. I saw it in a sold out crowd, there were serious applause when it was over.
An amazing movie, proof that intellegent comedy does still exist!
(I never did see Bottle Rocket, now I have to)
It's playing in LA and NY only right now. It should spread to the rest of you eventually <IMG SRC="smilies/wink.gif" border="0">
