Well, it's over. A lot of things are over. Jason Giambi, the man who hit .342, belted 38 Homers, had a slugging % of .660 and drove in 120 runs, has finally left Oakland after a very productive seven year stint.
As you may know, that offensive machine signed a 7 year deal with the New York Yankees worth about 120 million. Oakland was offering I believe a 6 year, 91 mill offer.
If you saw the press conference, it was a different Giambi. He shaved, he wore some cheap 3 piece suit, he hugged Joe Torre and he mentioned Barry Bonds... when Bonds clearly did not needed to be mentioned.
A lot of A's fans now are torn over this whole situation, some think he sold out, others think it's the management's fault for not resigning Giambi before the start of the 2001 season.
But what's done is done. Is life over for the young Oakland Athletics? Hardly. They still got the best pitching starting trio in the league, (Mark Mulder, Tim Hudson, Barry Zito) a pitching prospect stud waiting to be called up (Mario Ramos) along with two other prospect studs in the making, (Second Baseman Esteban German and First Baseman Jason Hart) and they still got young, good players in Jermaine Dye, Miguel Tejada, Terrence Long and Eric Chavez.
Oh yeah, Jason Isringhausen is now gone, but in his place is a younger, more talented closer in Billy Koch, whom the A's recently traded for. Koch is in his mid 20s, but the kid "only" throws his fastballs up to speeds of 100 MPH....
And now David Justice is an Oakland A's, but will he stay? Rumors have it that the A's are gunning for Gary Sheffield and listen to this one...
Billy Beane (The A's transaction honcho) is said to have expressed a fairly serious interest in acquiring BARRY BONDS! They'd simply allocate Giambi's 91 million to Bonds' table... and I'll tell you what, crazier things have happened.
Word also has it that the A's might try to have BOTH Sheffield and Bonds in the outfield together (both of them good friends in real life, both want to win a Championship)
So stick around. There is life after Jason Giambi for the A's... and 2002 will prove it.
... Jason Giambi will be on the DAVE LETTERMAN LATE NIGHT SHOW tonight so check that out on CBS... let's see what that 120 million bastard has to say. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad2.gif" border="0">
