eBay Announcement

--------------------------

At eBay, we're dedicated to providing you with the most dynamic marketplace we can. We invest a good deal in technology, marketing and customer support to help our buyers and sellers become more successful.

We are announcing a number of changes to the current eBay price structure. Effective Thursday, January 31, 2002 we are increasing Final Value Fees, adding a new Reserve Fee price point, charging a fee to use Buy It Now, increasing eBay Motors vehicle Insertion and Final Value Fees, and in late February, changing how we charge Final Value Fees for Dutch listings. Other Feature Fees and Insertion Fees, and fees for eBay Premier and Real Estate remain unchanged.

eBay.com changes:

Final Value Fees
We are adding 0.25% to each Final Value Fee price point. Current New
$0.01 - $25.00
$25.01 - $1000.00
$1000.01 and up 5.00%
2.50%
1.25% 5.25%

1.50%

Reserve Fee
We are adding a new price point for Reserve listings above $200. Current New
$0.01 - $24.99
$25.00 - $199.00
$200.00 and up $0.50
$1.00
$1.00 $0.50
$1.00
$2.00

Buy It Now Fee

A $0.05 Feature Fee will be charged for all auction-style items listed with the Buy It Now feature. The new fee will not apply to eBay Stores Buy It Now items.

Dutch Fee Impact

The standard Final Value Fee schedule will be applied to each item sold, not to the total dollar amount of the items sold. Thus, the Final Value Fee for each item sold will be identical to the standard eBay Final Value Fees outlined above.

eBay Motors Fee Impact (Only Passenger Vehicles and Other Vehicles)

eBay Motors is increasing Insertion and Final Value Fees for Passenger Vehicles and Other Vehicles from $25.00 to $40.00. In addition, a $0.50 feature fee will be charged for all Motorcycle auction items listed with the Buy It Now feature and a $1.00 feature fee will be charged for all Passenger Vehicles and Other Vehicles listed with the Buy It Now feature. eBay Motors Parts & Accessories fees remain identical to the new eBay.com fees.

eBay Stores Final Value Fee

Beginning in late February all fixed price eBay Stores items that are sold in multiple quantities to the same buyer will have Final Value Fees calculated on a per item basis. Final Value Fees for single item sales already are calculated on a per item basis.

We recognize that price increases directly impact our sellers, so we do not raise fees lightly or without considering the impact to our community. These increases will help us continue to build a vibrant marketplace by allowing us to invest heavily in technology, marketing and customer support, making it possible for millions of people to discover and use eBay.

Yeah, as if they weren't making enough money already.

First they added that annoying "checkout" crap and now this. eBay already had a winning formula established long ago. I think that they need to stop tinkering with the site's UI and messing with the fee structure (adjusting for inflation notwithstanding).

eBay management are getting some fat, fat heads.

They know their site is the hottest thing since sliced bread, and they're getting a bit greedy. "Yeah! Let's raise the rates a bit. They may not like it, but we're number 1! Where else're they gonna' go? BIG COMPANY PROFITS DAMNIT!".

The nickel for Buy it Now doesn't bother me. It's the other increases that do. And WHY for fuck's sake do they have ads on their pages?

Looks like some sellers are going to raise their prices- It wouldn't surprise me to see many of them add the Final Value Fee to their Shipping charge and refer to it as "S&H" instead of just Shipping.

EBay is truely one of the most greedy companies I have ever seen. One time (for reasons unknown...) They email me saying I owe them 4$ and change. I sent them a money order for that amount, but in the time I mailed them the money order, and the time they received the letter, a new fiscal month lapsed over, and they charged me additional interest on that 4$!!! They email me saying I have to pay them another quarter or some crap like that... they wouldn't let it go!

I feel the same way. When I joined eBay in mid-99 the site was just fine. In fact, it looked much better than it does now. The selling form is easily 4X as long as it was then. Come on, how many people use half of those options? I didn't even know about the checkout thing until recently. Confused the hell out of me. What was wrong with the buyer and seller emailing each other within a few days and working everything out on their own terms? I've also noticed that the site now has pop-ups. The sellers are already paying them, so why should they need that?

Maybe they think their site is too big and they're purposely trying to get some sellers to drop off so it's easier to manage?

I recently sold several items on eBay for about $300 total and I owe them over $18.00. That seems like a lot to me. Plus I didn't know about the PayPal slice until I started getting payments...how many times has eBay already raised their Final Value fee percentage in the last year or two? Seems I remember it being lower last time I sold something (I usually buy). But I like that they host your picture now, for free. I dunno.

They have put the prices up on the UK site aswell, by the same percentage but have not taken into acount £1 does not equal $1, so that means the UK prices have gone up more than others!!
At least if think that is correct.

eBay is run by a woman, what do you expect? ;)

Between using Paypal and eBay to sell something, your losing 15-25% of the final sale price to their dumb fee's.

That's why I do not accept paypal for any ammount over 25 dollars any more, they take to much out. The shock that opened my eyes, was on a 300 payment I recieved with paypal, I lost like 12 bucks to their fee's, that's just crazy.

well, the only thing that bothers me about this is that people might start selling less on ebay... I'm a buyer only, and I never sell stuff so this really doesn't worry me. But holy shit, I never realised how much money is lost from these things... that's just plain fucked up.

Pop-ups on eBay? I haven't seen these yet but when I do, it's going right into my POW! filter.

POW!... what a wonderful little program. One of the best freebies ever.
