Flame of Recca GBA--the best GBA fighting game you're not playing

I just got the game Rekka no Honoo (Flame of Recca) for Game Boy Advance, and it's actually pretty good, if a bit simple.

The controls are pretty intuitive: B does melee attacks, A does a distance attack, R blocks. Also, you can double-jump to higher platforms, and execute 3-hit combos with the B and A buttons (BBB, BAB, BAA, BBA) that can knock an opponent back, launch him up, or slam him down. As you progress in the story mode, you learn specials for your character that can be executed by holding R and hitting a direction on the D-Pad and B at the same time. To use the specials, you need to first charge your special meter by holding down, and if you hold down until the gathering energy around you is red and hit A, you can unleash a special distance attack that usually entails a spread shot (or in the case of some, a sweeping weapon). Also, you can get supers that are done by holding R and hitting up+A.

As for the sound, it's pretty good, and the voices are pretty understandable. The graphics are exquisite, and the story seems good enough, but I can't really understand Japanese, and to make matters worse, I've never seen the series. :(

The bosses towards the end are pretty interesting, as well; a sort of biomechanical monster, a man-tentacle, and a freaky snake with an eye in its stomach.

The main character is a boy named Recca, a ninja WITH A BOMB IN HIS RIB CAGE... I mean, seven dragons in his arm. :p He and his allies have to save Recca's girlfriend (I think) from SODOM, an evil organization bent on... well, bent on something. :p

On that note, does anybody know how to unlock the secret characters? I think it may have something to do with either getting a certain number of wins in survival mode or beating the story mode with every character.

the way specials work it sounds like devil may cry, but the way you make combos looks like Sengoku 2001...

So is this a fighter,

scrolling beat em up?

what is it really?

It's a fighter. It's an interesting one, though; you can go to higher ground by double-jumping to ledges, but if there's one flaw there, it's that you can't do distance attacks downward (as far as I know :p ). That's probably the most glaring flaw in the engine.

Anyway, when you beat an opponent in "Battle" mode (vs.), it shows some manga shots of the opponent getting his ass kicked. I've never seen the anime or read the manga, but it occurs to me that Recca really looks a lot like Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing.

Again, this is probably one of the best licensed games you'll ever see... definitely not one of the most-publicized ones, but still very good.

I don't know this game but it seems to be fun. Anyone has some pics of it?
