I use my brother's ps2 for watching DVDs and it's not that great. I mean, he doesn't have the remote, so we use a ps2 controller to operate it... And then you could buy a standalone without region protection... I mean, I hate using the DVD-X cd to boot my asian dvds.

When I play a dvd on my ps2, the sound seems to be lower than if a used a stand alone dvd.

Does your ps2 have this problem, or its just my unit?

what do you mean slower? I mean, normal DVD machines don't force you to sit through the PS2 boot sequence, right? But in terms of moving from chapter to chapter, I guess so. Typical sony construction.

Ever check out the innards of a sony viao? Shit.

I use my PS2 as the DVD player for my room. I have the Pelican remote for it and everything is just fine with it.

Peace

if your choices are ps2 or xbox for dvd playback, go with the xbox.

if you're choosing between all three, go for standalone.

but if the ps2 or xbox are two of your options, you obviously want to be able to play games, so pick one of those based on the games that interest you and live without high quality dvd for a while.

I have a PS2, and a standalone. The vanilla DVD went out into the living room. The PS2 stayed in my room. I hooked up the digital optical tonight, and watched Se7en in DD5.1 and DTS. It was amazing.

Set your DVD volume to +1 or +2 in your setup when you have a DVD in. You have to stop the movie, becuse it can't change on the fly.

I have the official remote, and it is just as good as my standalone. The only thing I can't do is Zoom and turn it off/on.

The Xbox DVD is great, much better than my stan alone Sony DVD player.
It looks and sounds clean, the PS2 is not all that..

I use my PS2 for the occasional DVD. I'd rather use my standalone DVD player, but the Gameshark2 version 2.0 lets you play any region DVD and Godzilla Vs Meagiurus is Region 3 encoded. ;)

Interesting to know about the gameshark.

My brother bought the PS2 with GT3 packed in and it won't work with my Gameshark. What a crock of shit, eh. Makes me wish I didn't sell my own PS2 (one of the early US models).

I still have this complex about wanting to own the scph 10000 model (plays both US and japanese dvds) but I know for a fact that the playback quality is the worst (I mean movies would look better on a slide projector) for US dvds. The colors are always changing, etc. It was a nightmare. At first I thought it was my tv, but then I got the US version and there were no problems at all.

Anyhow, when the messiah card is fully operational I'll probably install it and be able to play my import games and dvds as I please (mainly interested in import games).

What version Gameshark? Early versions had problems with different versions of the PS2. If it is an early version (1.0-1.3), the 2.0 version is only $10 from www.gameshark.com. I recommend it highly.

This is just common sensical stuff, but wouldn't it be a bad idea to use PS2 as a DVD player if you have a stand alone already?

I mean, you're already using it for PS2 (And possibly PS1) games, right? All that adds up to alot of abuse on the lens.

And we all remembed what happened to the original PSX's lens after about 2 1/2 years.

Do you guys think the PS2 will still operate as well 6 years from now as it does today?
