You can be general and vague or you can go in-depth, breaking down the years even if you wish. Give me your thoughts on the N64 and what you think of it today. Failed miserably? Underrated system? Take it away -- I'd like to read your comments.

The system failed miserably from the start. Complete crap games with a few exceptions. Essentially all that anyone missed by not owning one was Mario 64.

Project Reality as it was dubbed, man I remember shitting my pants seeing the demos of this in action, the wondermega-esque CDROM layout and the SGI-chipset inspired graphics.

First time I saw Mario64 is action.. I was blown away, I got my N64 a few months later, and Mario64 remains one of the greatest games ever to me, both technically and gameplay wise.

sure, nintendo easily owned the 2D side of things but Mario64 gave a big "fuck you" to other games designers who just didnt know how to utilise the 3D capabilities of the machines.

Look at the pad, it was designed for M64. As for the rest of the games, hmm some are ok.

Hmmm...

Well i'd hardly say it failed, since its the most popular game seller at my used-game store; so the games were popular and still are among parents and young children.

It helped stir about the pokemon craze. in that way its successful.

But it crippled Nintendo by reinforcing the "kiddy" image with its lack of third-party mature support.

Regardless, it had a few amazing games, that I still own the system for, and only for.

Mario 64
Zelda
Zelda: MM
Perfect Dark [surprisingly still fun]
and a few others.

I liked it and still have mine.

Hell I even play it too , Blitz absoutly rocks on the N !

So does Gretzky , Im not sure what everyone wanted from it to begin with ? But I think for the time it was produced it kept me entertained and thats really all that mattered.

I dont think the PS was really any better in any way shape or form , just different.

I scored on mine , I bought 2 the first day they were released both with Pilot wings and sold one the next week for $1000.00 in my local paper when the shortage hit.

That was a good christmas for me !

I really didn't like it much. It was a massive disappointment to me. I would've been perfectly happy never owning it. Sure Mario 64 was tops. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were nice too... but that was pretty much it for me. I really couldn't get into any of the Zeldas at all. I love Zelda, but I just hated their N64 counterparts.

Oh well, at least the GCN is shaping up to be great.

I'm a big fan of my n64

Still own one with around 50 games

Some absolute belters on that systems which are only just getting eclipsed now

Goldeneye was the finest fps around and only now are slightly better games appearing - now Halo owns that crown

for me i still enjoy the n64 - but hey i am a big fanboy :) :)

I've played all the games you listed, and not a single one was worth buying the system for. The Playstation had plenty of action rpgs that the Zelda platformers didn't even compare to, and the PC has much better shooters than anything that came anywhere near the N64.

My brother brought it on launchweek. Mario 64 did blow my little world away -- yes. I ain't never seen anything like that up to that point. I remember just taking the time to appreicate the water in Mario 64 and going for a little swim... oh come on! Fess up, I'm not the only geek who did that... :p

I remember the WCW wrestling games on N64 by Aki... great stuff. 4 player modes were always a delight to experience. My friends and I spent the time triple teaming on one another until that person bleeded... ahem...

Golden Eye was sick. Straight up.

And of course, I was very impressed with the 4 controller outlet of the system.
FINALLY!
A system where you don't have to buy some fucking 25 dollar multiplayer tap! About time!

Overall I say it was a disappointing system, but it had its moments as every system does. (well... almost every system)

Out of all the consoles I own(around 40) the N64 has to be just about my least favorite out of the bunch. With the exception of a few good games I'd have to say there was lots of trash released. Most all of the games look the same IMO, they all use the same damn textures.

The controller is shit, that I am sure of. I've seen so many of those controls die due to stick falure it's really sick. They just get "limp" and become worthless. Games like Mario Party don't help this either.

Well that's all I have to say this subject at the moment. I'd just like to add that the N64 gets a double down form me. :p

K. that's still just your opinion. personally, i think the n64 was a great multiplayer system. lots of fun involved.

but the psx-action Rpg thing? like what? Threads of Fate? lmao. yeah that's better. if by better, you mean $10.99

Alundra, Alundra 2, Granstream Saga, and Azure Dreams to name a few.

[edit] Brave Fencer Musashi was also better than the N64 garbage[/edit]

Oh of course -- the dreaded N64 controller. That was not one of my more favorite controllers as well. In fact, I hated the design. It worked well for certain games, sure. But others, not a chance in hell.

I'm happy to see all these varying replies. Some love the N64 up to this day, others think it's OK, but disappointing (like me), while the rest think it's plain crap.

Keep them coming!

The last note I wanted to make:

The one thing I really hoped for in the N64 was that it carried over the success of SNES. I was hoping for N64 to take gaming to the next level. I don't think personally that it ever happened. I think Nintendo lost a lot of fans with the N64. No Contra, no Metroid, no 2D Castlevania, etc.

While as a whole I think the system's okay, it could have and should have been much more.

I think Nintendo really did drop the ball.

Just my take -- and I'm sticking to it.

I could never get 'into' Mario 64, despite the claims of many that it was the 'best game ever made'.

The game that drew me in was Wave Race 64, which was an incredible game, and still my favorite out of the very few games worth owning.

I think that they could have done more with this. Many GC games (Animal Crossing, Dinosaur Planet) were originally designed for the N64. I wish SNK and Nintendo hadn't fallen out (SNK used to develop for the NES; they ported over Baseball Stars, Ikari Warriors and Alpha Mission, I believe, among others (I think Lee Trevino was one of the games they did).

I think that if Nintendo hadn't done so much to alienate developers prior to the N64's release, and released it sooner, it would have had a better chance. Samurai Shodown 64 couldn't have been worse on the N64 than Warrior's Rage 2 on the PSX. At the least, it would have benefited from the faster processor (64 bits and 93.75 MHz as compared to 32 bit and 38.8688 MHz) and increased system RAM.

Yes the N64 is the worst Nintendo system only cause after the fantastic game I have ever seen back then (Super Mario 64) it just made shit ones. I mean Zelda was another blow away for me. And Zelda MM. They also screwed up badly by saying they were going to bring out this Nintendo 64DD. It did not come out and that fucked them up super style! People were heaps excited about it and it did not come out (well not to Europe and America anyway). But Super Mario 64 was and is the best game ont N64 and the Zelda games.

Also no Metriod fucked em up heaps too.
The new system is doing great for me.
OOOOOOHHHHH yeah one more other thing I found one important part about Nintendo that they have held for ages in thier consoles.
PIRACY! That's right none of the Nintendo consoles can be pirated. NONE! That is really smart on Nintendo's side how amazing I think! EVEN the new system games can't be PIRATED! go Nintendo! :D

No it didn't, Rainbow Six, Castlevania 64, Turok and Duke Nukem sucked.

Star Soldier rocks, but still doesn't make the system worth owning.

I'm happy with my n64...

The game that I keep my N64 out for is Sin and Punishment (Tsumi to Batsu). The Child of God is a rail shooter. The game is lush, beautiful, gripping, and actually replayable. Keep yourlady away from this game because it will make her loins wet with desire, and make sure to bring a spare change of pants for yourself.

I thought I was just going to be playing another shooter - I wasn't expecting a new religion...

If you like Anime, and you like shooters, and you liked Vagrant Story's style of art, get Sin and Punishment and dust off the N64. It's worth every penny.

Other than that - and all things other than that are deeply overshadowed - you must get Bust a Move 2, one of the best versions of Puzzle Bobble on any system, also known as Puzzle Bobble EX on the MVS. Only difference is that the 3D intro is real on the N64 version. ;)

Personally I loved Yoshi on the 64. It had a lot of character. It was cute, very easy, but worth my time, yeah.

Mischief Makers - solid platformer. Like Top Hunter, but very very Treasure. That is a good thing.

Needless to say ISS 98/ISS 2000 (is there a ISS2000? I heard there is...). I'll only play a few sports games. This series is one of them.

Mario Golf - even if you hate mario, it's a damn good golf game. I don't like mario, but I can deal with him in this game.

If Blaine were alive today he'd say Conker's Bad Fur Day...
