I think it's terrible. Everyone else I've talked to seems to think it's hilarious...

Lots of running gags and "obnoxious" (on purpose) humor.

I got maybe 2 laughs out of the 2 volumes I was force fed - I wouldn't recommend it. I'm sure a lot of others would, though...

Good artwork, though!

BTW, if you're looking for a good, new "comedy" series, Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri/FLCL is quite good. If you check my links, Rightstuf has it for, like, 20 bucks (volume 1)... should be on special for a few more days, at least.

It's really, really wacky but the characters are very likeable (and original). Good dub, good commentary (by the Japanese creators). The soundtrack is phenomenal, too.

GTO is a really good series, too. Very unique style (and premise, really) - solid characters, voice acting, and music. There's a certain amount of lewdness to it, but somehow it manages to be in good taste and never gets out of hand.

IMO, they're both much better choices than Excel Saga.

In a word: Yes.
In two words: Hell yes.

You really have to see it to know the goodness of it. But watch it with the original dialogue... the dubbed voices just make my ears bleed. ;_;

That said, I have the utmost respect for Mitsuishi Kotono for being able to do Excel so well. Particularly, the self-parody in episode 16, I believe (In the name of the Moon, I'm gonna whoop your ass!). And all who see will come to fear the power of the Afro.

I already have GTO, I'll give FLCL a try. While I at it, I'll buy the first volume of Excel Saga. If I don't like it, there's no big loss. ;)

I've been reading the reviews, does this series have a actually plot? Or is it like a South Park?

Excel Saga is OK, but not as funny as ADV tries to make you believe. It's not a show with non-stop laughs, and it's definitely not as funny as people have tried to make it out to be. They do a lot of making fun of other Anime/Manga, which is mildly humorous on it's own, but I don't think I got any really good laughs out of it. Maybe a few chuckles here and there. I recommend renting it or borrowing before buying it. It's not a show for everyone.

If you want funny anime, you should check out His & Her Circumstances, Love Hina, and Iketeru Futari (only available as a download fansub).

I've watched a couple of episodes of Excel Saga and laughed only a few times at best. I guess I couldn't get into the yammering spaz that she was.

Hail Illpalatso-sama!!!!

Excel fucking rules, it's awesome. Funny ass shit. Poor fucking Pedro, he can't get home to his sexy wife, and then he dies, only to be molested by the Universe. I haven't laughed so hard in such a long time.

GTO is also one of the best Anime's ever FUCKING MADE! I gotta watch FLCL, although I hear it's as much a mind fuck as it is a comedy.

Peace

I hella loooooooove Excel Saga. Before watching though, it's good to have a decent anime vocab, since the anime makes a lot of references to other ones.
Pedro oh so burns my potato ;_; Why can't he be my lover?!

I also agree that FLCL rules. I wouldn't put it on the same plane as ES though, since ES is goofy 24/7. FLCL has lulls/serious parts.
Hella got me into yellow Vespas though.

I didnt like it. The story was to weird and the jokes were to transversed to get my laughing attention. Thats the problem with expected humor. I do not enjoy it. To each his own. I tried to get into this, found it a bit immature for my tastes.

I absolutely love Excel Saga. To really appreciate it, you need to be a fan of parody. Admittely, the running gags could get old on their own, but I just find them an added bonus to the already great parody main plot.

Yes, it has a plot. Several, in fact.

1) Excel (the main character) works for a secret organization called Across, whose leader (Ilpalazzo) desires to cleanse the world of its rottenness. However, she sucks at her job. Also, she has a pet/"emergency food supply" called Menchi and lives with a space princess named Hyatt who tends to die at inopportune intervals.

2) Pedro, a Colombian man who was stuck in Japan trying to make some money for his family at home, dies in an accident. The Universe molests him (and beats the audience upside the head with a brick called "Metaphor") and he finds out that his wife was sexing his best friend behind his back.

3) Nabeshin, aka Watanabe Shinichi, the producer of the show (and the king of afros) crosses the other characters' paths at various points in the series. He's pretty much always there in one form or another.

4) Three young men--Watanabe, Iwata, and Sumiyoshi--work for a law enforcement agency in "F City," in which the series takes place. Their boss, Kabapu, is evil and has a weird mustache. Watanabe seems to cross paths with Hyatt a lot (I believe he thinks her name is "Miss Ayasugi" or something), Iwata tries to mack on a psycho bitch named Misaki Matsuya, and Sumiyoshi doesn't talk; rather, his thoughts appear as solid words.

5) The Puchus--cute, teddy bear-like aliens--make random appearances, turning into ugly freaks when attacked.

I've only seen up to ep. 16, so I don't know much else. Hope that helps explain, though.

Excel rocks the house! I own all three releases, and I plan on purchasing the others when they're available.

Ah, yes -- Lord Illpalazzo! I noticed that you're using him as your avatar.

Here is something worth noting:
Fans of the Excel Saga series can visit http://www.excel-saga.com for episode information, reviews, and character sketches.

Excel is great, but in most aspects GTO did a better job imo. Still if you have the funds, they are both worth getting.

Don't buy FLCL before you watched Excel Saga, FLCL is E.S. on a trip with a lot of misteriousness added to it. (and it's just as hard to understand as Lain is..) I watched it 3 times already :)

Exel Saga is absolutely brilliant!
One of the best-presented, manic and downright hilarious anime shows I have seen in a while!
It does help if you have a good background knowlege in anime, but there are enough jokes in there that arn't anime-referances to keep everyone hapy.

Also the dub is excellent, wehther the new voice of Excel can keep up with Jessica Cavello's manic pace for the next 3 volumes is yet to be seen, but for now Jessica fires of dialogue at 100-rounds-a-minute, bombarding viewers with a multitude of silly accents and insane lines.

Definately a good purchase for anyone with a sense of humor.

I 've decided to buy some Animes instead in videogames this month. Are there any other good recommendations? I'm into all animes except the following, horror, war, adult, and Anime movies.

These are the ones I already have:
3X3 Eyes, Ah! My Goddess, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, Burn Up-W, Celestial Legend, Cowboy Bebop, Dual, El-Hazard, El-Hazard, Fushigi Yugi, GTO, Gundam Wing, His and Her Circumstances, Irresponsible Captain Taylor, Lost Universe, Love Hina!, Magical Knight Rayearth, Martian Successor Nadesico, Maze TV, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Orphen, Outlaw Star, Pilot Candidate, Ranma ½, Rurouni Kenshin, Saber Marionette J, Slayers, Sorcerer Hunters, Soul Hunter, Soultaker, Tekkaman Blade II, Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo, Trigun, Vandread, Vandread The Second Stage, Yu Yu Hakusho.

What are your recommendations? I prefer Anime DVDs only.

You could give Dai-Guard a shot. I quite enjoyed the first volume of that.
Also you could try Berserk, if blokes and swords are your thing. it can be a little corny and over-serious at times though.
Oh, and dont forget Burn up Excess (if you liked Burn Up W)

For some mysterious stuff, you *need* to get Boogiepop Phantom and Serial Experiments Lain.

For some adventure-ish stuff, I'd give Escaflowne (the series, not the movie) and Macross Plus a try.

I'd also recommend the Love Hina manga. I think you'll enjoy it even more than the DVDs.

Not the first volume, at least...
