Really liked the first one. I don't know much about Silent Hill 2 other than the fact that there's a new character.

Please give me your GENERAL opinions on SH2 and don't give me any potential spoilers please. If you *must* go in detail and whatnot, please be sure to write *SPOILER* up in the top.

I should get the game within a week...

I'll be back here to post my thoughts when I finally do.

I mean, Harry. :D Gotcha.

"In my restless dreams, I see that town
Silent Hill
You promised you'd take me there again someday
But you never did.
Well, I'm alone here now, in our special place...
Waiting for you..."

From that point on I knew the game was gonna be good.
If you don't know the story its about the dude James, who gets a letter from his dead wife telling him where to find her in Silent hill, so he goes there to find her. The game is very freaky. It has this special way of scaring you, it's not like Resident Evil-pop-out-of-the-closet-ooga-booga scary. It's the make you say wtf! scary. I don't want to give you any spoilers but what happens at the end in the hotel is really cool. I'm just telling you that you won't be disappointed :) I love this game, I only beat it twice but I got the same ending :( So now I'm going after it a 3rd time. It's very good. Especially alone in the dark :)

loved the game.

in the beginning you'll spend a lot of time just standing in one place to scan the whole area wondering what or where sounds are coming from (especially since you have no weapon).

after you finish it the first time you get the option to turn the fog on or off.

Hey, I JUSt got it the other day, too. I am waiting to play it when I have a good stretch of time, but I also loved the first one. Uber-Scary.

About damn time. Silent Hill 2 has a better overall storyline in the context of the town itself, but the game is no better or worse than Silent Hill. Both are masterpieces. The only flaw with Silent Hill 2 is that the linearity of the game is much more blatant. Don't let that stop you though.

If you don't have an X-Box try to get the PS2 rerelease instead of the first release.

I bought a used copy for my XBOX about a month ago and hoped to finish it before I got Shenmue IIx, but I didn't get around to it.

I think I'm 90% done with the game, I'm just at a stage where I missed a crucial item and now have to backtrack for it.

The wax doll. I need it to open the tunnel door (with the horseshoe, which I have) to proceed past the jail/Historical building section.

Silent Hill 2 was enjoyable, but nowhere near as scary as the original. This is due to a number of things...

1. The overall tone of the game is not as bleak.
2. The overriding emotion of the whole thing was one of depression and loss, as opposed to confusion and despair.
3. The story itself (and the answer to the whole conundrum) is much more cut-and-dried. Knowledge defies fear, and the fact that SH2's story is so easily understood undermines the fearsome nature of the game itself.
4. The monsters, while grotesque and horrific enough in their own right, are generally limited in their ability to actually hurt you. The feeling of an ever-present threat of death was lacking.

SH2 was leaps and bounds ahead of SH1 in every possible technical respect. The overall effect, though, is dramatically less than its predecessor. SH1 has yet to be topped in terms of sheer fear value for me by anything. Now don't get me wrong; I enjoyed Silent Hill 2 quite a lot. But for these very real reasons, it simply did not have as profound an impact on me as the original. SH1 had me jumping at shadows for weeks, and to be perfectly frank, I don't scare easily.

I just hope SH3 can recreate that feeling properly.

Silent Hill 3 should be out first quarter 2003. I can't wait. :(

I'm kind of leary though, from what I heard it revolves around some woman going shopping and then getting lost in the town.

Will this game be along the lines of the crap that is Resident Evil 3: Nemesis?

the SH3 story is like some chick goes shopping and gets teleported to another dimension or some crap. I don't care about that part as long as the game is scary and the rest of the story is good.

Ya that cone head was the skariest monster in the game and that was taim in my book. The first game had a better eary fealing that creepy fealing that crawls all over ya and makes you look over your sholder every few minutes. That incomplete story that left the mind wondering into darker places for answers. Just evil. There needs to be more depth in the story for the new one. That cross between nightmare and reality just wasnt there in the second one.

First of all, graphic is way better than the first Silent Hill. I thought Konami can do better than that but I guess their programmers/artists were just too lazy to make it look better.

Second, the atmosphere isn't as tense as the first one. Maybe I'm very picky but it's true. I was scared to death when playing first SH during the night.

Too bad that Konami has no intension to release enhance version of SH2 on US PS2 but Xbox. JPN cover is way better coz it has hologram cover....very cool

What Deuce and Liquid are saying about SH2 is true. I think what it all adds up to though is that in SH2 you just don't feel as PARANOID as you did in the first one, because in the first one if you were outdoors something could pop up on you at almost any time from anyWHERE. The monsters also actually attacked you over and over again and chased after you. The paranoia also comes from questioning what you're seeing. In SH2 you realize pretty early on that every character in the game is mentaly unstable so there's almost no questioning it. The twists and turns in Silent Hill's plot were conducted in a much better manner and did a better job at having you constantly changing your perspective on things but not really knowing if you SHOULD.

The infamous "Dark Silent Hill" is VERY toned down in the sequel as well, which is kind of a shame because if you know where it "comes from" in the original Silent Hill and look at how fucked up emotionally the SH2 characters are you'd expect something even worse than the original game. But no, we just get normal Silent Hill at night time. ><; The Hospital and Prison areas are almost enough to make up completely for that in their coolness, I just wish that coolness was spread distributed through the rest of the game. The prison/labyrinth area especially almost trumps some of Silent Hill 1's scariest points IMO. This is the one point in the game where you're seriously saying to yourself "James is fucking crazy, I think."

you should still get it though. It's a good addition to any PS2 library.
