I know they're kinda defunct now, but there were some top special edition collectors sets, and directors cuts. Many of which haven't made it to DVD yet.

You still can't get the Star Wars Triology or Indiana Jones on dvd as of yet

Some of the Criterion Collection stuff was awesome. Any one got Ghostbusters CC?

I still think that (on a decent pressing) CAV matches the current picture quality of any DVD.

So anybody with a decent LD collection?

I've got about 40 or so LDs, plus the Indy and Star Wars Special Edition box sets

Criterion editions I have:
Chasing Amy, Robocop, Samurai III, Supercop and Taxi Driver

I probably also have about 40 LDs have both the THX remastered and the special edition Star Wars sets and a bunch of Tenchi Muyo anime.

Cool.

I got Robocop CC on DVD (one of the first dvd discs I got) - the extra scenes are brilliant.

The whole ED-209 intro sequence in the office is hilarious!!

I have a very small collection...but I do have the ultra elusive Japanese directors cut of "Until The End Of The World" which is a good deal longer than the 3 hour US release.

I have about 20 LDs, although most of 'em are on DVD now, I just can't bring myself to replace an LD with a DVD unless the DVD has got some cool extra stuff the LD doesn't.

I still will buy a laser if it's real cheap ($7 - $10) or if it's not out on DVD.

The real problem with lasers is that if you buy the best picture quality disks (CAV or CLV- can't remember which is which...), then the movie is stretched over 2-4 disks and even with a dual reading LD player, you still have to switch disks.

The cool thing about lasers was that it was a real high-end thing for the most part, so you got some great, extra feature special editions. DVD is more mass-consumer and has ALOT of crap product on the market, I've ebven got some DVDs that look like they were digitised from video cassette masters.

Yeah, I'm with you there. I don't really see much point in replacing any of my LD's with DVDs unless there is something REALLY extra.

DVD just doesn't feel the same. The disc swapping thing never bothered me as it was still less irritating than watching a film on TV with loads of commercial breaks in it

I'm sure I read somewhere that George Lucas doesn't really rate DVD's and that's why it really took so long for Phantom Meanace to be released on DVD. Episode 1 was out on LD AGES ago (although only in Japan )
He didn't want an Episode 1 DVD and only didd it out of fan presure. I'm sure he has no immeadiate plans to bring the Triology out on DVD.

LD cases were cool too and the box sets like NTSC Star Wars were fantastic (the PAL one sucked).

THX laserdiscs rocked - George liked 'em so much!!

BTW - CAV is short play (top picture quality)
CLV is extended play (still very very good)

I used to love LD's. Wielding one of those big ass silver discs made you feel like you actually were loading a reel of film. And since Lucas is being such a bitch about giving us what we want (Indy, Star Wars...)
Gotta have em around still.

This is actually pretty interesting.

I asked my dad "Hey dad, did we ever at any point own a LaserDisc player?"

"No." was his reply.

Yet i went and looked at the CD player that was in the family room in the corner and it CLEARLY said "LaserDisc" on it.

but... i don't have any LD's. i'd love to get some of those KOF LD's though!

Though I no longer have a laserdisc player I still have many LDS and still buying the Japanese import Godzilla CAV box sets. They used to go for the price of a NEO GEO home cart so I'm still looking for a good price on Biollante (think I mispelled the name) VS. Godzilla and most of the regular series.
They just released the latest G-flick this past December in Japan. Hoping someone will bring it overseas in the next couple of years.
