Microsoft is planning to make a handheld device for use with it's X-box as well as a stand alone computer in it's own right.

From what I gather from the story the size of the unit is a questions, whether it is a Pocket PC size unit or more of a tablet computer. The unit is to be more than just a gaming platform but it's exact functions are unknown as the article itself seems to be a little confused on it's purposes.

But as far as we're concerned it appears to be a handheld console and may be Microsoft's attempt to wrest the handheld market death grip that Nintendo has held since the inception of the handheld market.

Can they do it? I don't think so, but at any rate this type of competiton will only make better games and products so...what the hell, more power to them.

Personally I think Microsoft is a little arrogant to think that they can suceed where so many have failed, in a field that they have just entered (game consoles).

ANother American attempt at upping the bar for stupidity.

Of course people will buy it, and let it collect dust next to their Phillips CDi.

Hey! They invented CD-Technology pal!

That was just a system that was way ahead of it's time...unfortunately, it's 'time' was about a 5 minute window.

Yeah, the phillips CDi was cool, but unsupported. For more examples of how unsupportedness effects a machine, look to another piece of fools gold: the Atari Jaguar.

Or maybe the Tiger game.com

In an alternate universe, I was playing Metal Gear Solid on my Philips CDi.

It was a FM-video-based game and I was really enjoying untill I realized that I had to go home.

You know, I only expect evil from the X-box and anything an american does for gamers. It's like how Sony makes games and computers, but their computers only look cool. The Vaio sucks for reliability though. Just not a well made computer.

I know, I have one.

Anyhow, the only big company that supported the Game.com was Konami (metal gear, right)

Look which japanese companies supported the X-Box already: Konami

and Tecmo (bunch of slut whore mercenaries who can't make a real "fighting game").

So I don't think an american device, even made by M$ will garner Japanese support, and that's what they need, because American game companies only make sports games.

So yeah, M$ will probably try to make this a gaming device, and people will buy it to play solitaire or freecell on the bus while going to work.

Don't forget that Tiger sought out to purchase licences from Konami and make their own games based on them. Remember Gamecom also had Capcom and Sega licensed games as well.

Also, Konami also supported the 3Do with some heavy hitter titles like Policenauts (in my book, its a heavy hitter).

Yeah, exactly, Konami is a slut.

And I don't know, buying licenses... For some reason I don't see this working because I was really into the NGPC, and the NGPC had licenses for everything. Even look at the Wonderswan. What a great machine.

Who knows. maybe it doesn't matter if your jpanese or american. It's just about if your product looks to sell a lot on that platform, and every kid already has a Gameboy Advance. So...

Man...all this American game designer bashing is weak, yo.

If you guys would say something like 'for fighting games' then that'd be cool. But I consider PC games to be video games, and the US not only produces good PC games, but arguably the best.

Show some harm for the man trying to get into the field, huh ?

I don't consider PC games as video games. I can't play them. Tried last year with Black and White (felt like a PC game, screwing up my system, slowing it down in other areas). Don't feel like bothering again.

Video games are either on video game consoles or arcade PCBs.

Blaine, I have tried and tried and tried to get into PC games, but I just can't. There are a few reasons.

1. I hate FPS games. Very boring and stale.

2. Art direction; When I used to work at a game store, I'd see the new PC games come out and with each new release, the art on that box just drew me away more. Man, bad art. BAD! I know it s all about that game and not baout the shallow art, but it still gets to me.

3. RTS games. BORING!

4. System requirements: when you buy aNew PC, you can play new games for 6 months. Fuck that, yo.

*shrug* you guys are entitled to your opinion. Personally box art doesn't mean much to me and honestly it's not as bad as a lot of the console box (I mean...come ON! compare the US release to the Japanese release of any game and find me one where we're better. Find me one and I'll show you 3 where the US box is worse). Black and White isn't a very good game in my opinion. I didn't like it at all. I'd suggest trying Fallout.

Thing is, I don't want to clutter my pc with any more games. They compromise my means to the neo-geo.com page, with their potential of slowing me down to a turtle trot.

But you know, can have your optinion.

How's Pittsburgh these days. I feel like I've been gone from there forever already. I still read my schools Misc market. People selling tickets for the steelers playoff games... I wish I lived by a team that could get in the playoffs. (damn skins)

Well...Fallout is like 300MB for the FULL install. The game is several year's old so it shouldn't cramp your style...enough of the PC games.

Pittsburgh is white. Foot of snow..well....6 inches at least.

Trust me, I really appreciate The Steelers doing well. Those were some rough times in the 80's. One day the Redskins will be back. Don't you worry.

Yeah, sorry we didn't get a chance to get together when you left. Give me a call when you get back, we'll hang out or something.

Dude, that's nuts. I can understand not liking PC games, that's perfectly OK. But what's on the PC are games. Nothing else.

BTW, what are the specs on your machine? You probably have a kick ass machine except it probably has a built in video card (Vaio's do). All you'd have to do is upgrade that and you'd be set.

Black and White sucks, IMO. Return to Castle Wolfenstien is kick ass. And BTW, Counter Strike sucks, it's like the equivalent of Tekken. Every idiot on the block loves it, but most hardcore fans loathe it's existance.

Peace

I'd like to think in a year I'd either be working for a game company or maybe even have my own.

You can do some QA work for me if ya want. They pay will suck though .

TFC is great. We had our own mod of it called warfare. It had a huge amount of sounds in it from full metal jacket, the simpsons, and we even added the "Nut Shot" the scream that followed was just so awesome....

Just those damn Marines pissed me off so much! Demoman forever!!!!!!!!

I was on the James Journal Expansion Pack, it was a TFC mod that focused mainly on the engineer (named James) in the single-player mode and revamped the weapons for the multi-player.

It was fucking epic-big. I remember doing the story boards, there was something like 90+ maps all in non-linear story format each with something like 10 possible endings. It was pretty damned cool. I did the Double Barrel Pump shotgun as well as some grenades and level textures.

Unfortunately the mod fell apart, as 80% of them do (MOD's fail just as much as California Weddings).

I was talking with a couple guys about making a TFC mod for Castle Wolfenstien...and have it exactly like the original .

A microsoft hand-held system? I'm guessing that it'll be the same size and weight as a freaking cinderblock.

Tru that, but look at Sony. They stole the market from Nintendo about 5 years ago.

It's the whole big corporate bully thing. As long as you have money, it doesn't matter how bad your games are.

Just take that $$, play the dual roles of carney and oily carsalesman, and volia! pimp your shit, however low quality it may be, to the mindless masses.

Sad.
