Although there are probably very few people who buy handhelds just to collect , I thought I would post this warning to those who do .

A few years ago a friend of mine had purchaced a Final Fantasy Wonderswan Color a few years back He decided never to open it and to keep it as strictly a collectable since he had allready owned a Melon Green one .

While re-sorting his collection recently he noticed a wet spot on the box of his Final Fantasy Wonderswan Color , frantically he searched his ceiling to see if he had any leaks in his roof .... he had no I dea what could have caused the damage suddenly he realized that he should open the box to see if anything else was damaged then he found the culprit ......

The free battery that was packaged with the unit had expired and corroded battery acid was everywhere .

So If any of you out there have handhelds that remain unopened I urge you to open them and remove the batteries ....or your efforts will be fruitless .

I know that to be a true story. In general, it's a good idea to remove the batteries from a portable system if it's not going to be used for a while, whether it's a Neo Pocket, Game Boy, Wonderswan, TurboExpress, etc. I learned that the hard way from one of my old Game Boys. :(

Thanks for the reminder!

I thought I had removed them from all of my portables, but then I remembered my still-packaged limited edition brown camoflage Neo-Geo Pocket, and sure enough, there was a pair of AAA batteries in there!

The original black & white Neo-Geo Pockets were available in three limited edition colors; camo brown, camo blue, and maple blue:

Indeed the battery was wrapped but this is ACID we are dealing with here .....

besides the battery also expands when leakage occurs ...so the plastic will not prevent anything .

Man that really sucks for your friend. Was the system damaged or just the packaging?

well thats why I dont leave batteries in remote controlles I dont use anymore also !

Its usually called common sense.

Dont keep batteries around anything you value .. period. installed or not.

Remember if they burst for any reason they are corrosive !
Damn I just realized I sound like Revquixo , sorry !

LOL

Shit.I knew this but I have over 100 handhelds with batteries in them and some sealed boxed handhelds.
This has got me nervous now.
I'm gonna go take out all the batteries.
This is gonna take awhile.
I'm gonna fill a big box up.
I get batteries by the bulk for free thats why everything has batteries in them.
Thank's for giving me the kick to do this.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up Retrogamer. I can't believe I really didn't give this much thought. I've got all the NGPC systems sealed, so I really thought it was a-okay. Now I'm gonna have to break the seal to salvage the entire deal... of collecting them in the long run.

Thanks for the heads up. This makes perfect sense. Time to go grab the razor blade and do some surgery...

Over and out...

The system was unharmed but , the box and everything else was ruined including the Final Fantasy cartridge . He was totally disheartened by the whole thing .
