Well, today I sat down with my recently acquired NES and a bunch of unboxed carts from Funcoland (to hold me over until I could afford complete games) and I didn't enjoy myself at all. The games just felt bland and boring. What the hell has happened to me? I used to worship the NES and SMS as a kid and now I get bored almost immediately no matter which 8-bit game I pick up. Is this normal? I still love my SNES and Genesis to death, but anything below the 16-bit systems I just find uninteresting. But worst of all, I don't really care to much for next-gen systems/games either. Well, except for wrestling sims and the DC. I've loved games with a passion ever since my first SMS and now, I only seem to find fun in my 16-bit systems. Is videogame withdrawal normal? Will the love ever come back?

I don't know how typical of a gamer I am, but NES is always gonna be my favorite console. I always find something I enjoy playing on it.

those nes games sucked back in the day as well. Most nes games are utter trash. I remember throwing them out windows (like the 3 stooges game) if they were trash.

I think it strongly depends on the game you are playing. I can still play Punchout, Contra, Castlevania and Metal Gear without having the feeling that something is wrong with the graphics. However I do understand that when you are surrounded by 3D DTS games, sometimes it can be hard to go back to the mono 8 bit NES but great games don't fade away with times.

Try doing something different with the games.
Like playing a 2 player game with someone else.
I don't play Nintendo much but I do play a lot when I have company come over. But I still Love the Nintendo.
Try a different type of game than you usually play.

Set a goal to complete a game or try and pass that level that you never could.

I just had an Awesome time playing Baseball Stars 2 with a friend of mine that came over today.
I did get totally sick of gaming once and got rid of everything.
After that stage in my life was gone I started collecting again.
That's why I'm so into collecting Video games today.
Try Not Playing any games for awhile and do other things.
If you Miss playing games after not playing for awhile maybe your withdrawal will be gone..

Try to look past all the badness in the game and think positive and you will enjoy it alot more.

I don't feel that way at all. I just purchased a TurboDuo, and while the graphics look very dated (particularly with the early Hu-Card games) I still love playing them.

Yeah but that's a 16-bit system.

I have also grown tired of most NES games. It's weird too, becuase I still like alot of Colecovision games. I can play Tapper and Mr. Do! all day long. <img src="graemlins/loco.gif" border="0" alt="[Loco]" />

I think the NES and consoles beyond thata cant even compare to the games released on the Coleco Vision, mainly beacuse they are arcade ports for the most part.

Yes the NES had its share of arcade ports , but the arcade machines were much different at that point and just were not as much fun in comparrison to the earlier arcade machines in my opinion.

Its funny how the simple things in life usually end up to be the most fullfilling.

Yep, PCE DUO is a *Hyper 8-Bit* system no matter what the specs saw about it being 16-Bit :) As for the old Famicom/NES games being boring... well I don't have this problem because I only collect the stuff that really interested me back then like,

Metal Gear
Contra
Super Contra
Guerrilla War
Heavy Barrel
Zelda
Crystalis
Ninja Gaiden I-III
Shatter Hand
Vice: Project Doom
P.O.W.
NARC
River City Ransom
Double Dragon I & II
Punchout!
SMB Trilogy

and a bunch more, but what I'm trying to say is that yeah, a lot of the games, and I do mean a lot of the stuff that came out on the NES was shit. But if you look for the games that were actually done well like the games I've listed above, then you shouldn't feel that old games pre 16-Bit suck. If you're buying ports of arcade games on the other hand and feel let down, then that's understandable... I mean let's face it, Contra and Super Contra for NES cannot hold a candle to the Arcade versions... but when it comes to this, "Buy a Supergun/Supernova" and play the real things. Just my 2 Cents :)

I'm with the school of thought that says if you're not having fun while playing, then don't. Just stop playing for a while. Time period could be weeks to months, maybe even years. At some point you may or may not want to start playing and collecting again. Do other stuff, build model airplanes, read a really long series of books, learn another language, if you're not in school anymore, take a course or two at your local city college. If you still don't like it after taking a break like that, then maybe you've <gasp> grown out of it, or maybe it's just not your style anymore. It happens. I used to be dead set on acting, it was what I did, I did it well and I wanted to keep on doing it. Eventually, the whole concept began to lose its appeal. I didn't like the people as much as I used to, I wasn't too keen on the grueling schedule it dictates, and there were other things that I wanted to do. So I decided to take a break and do other things. It's been a few years since then and I've decided to keep myself out of it, I'm much better off. Point is, take a step back and take a good hard look at what this hobby is. If you don't like what you see after a good long look and investigation, then don't do it anymore. It's your decision, I just ask that you make a well informed, thought out one. My $0.02

Get some challenging games. If you pick up a bunch of games that you have memorized and can beat with your eyes closed, of course it won't be too fun. Also, 90% of NES games are kind of sucky. You need to get the good ones. It's just not the case that the NES can't do any wrong. Conan is the worst game ever made. Even worse than LoSJ or Shadow: War of Succession!!!

I can't play Ninja Gaiden anymore because I feel it's way dated, but Mike Tyson's Punch Out is still excellent. It's a real classic.

When you find a NES game that you can still play today you've found a classic. Not many of the "classics" are really classic at all.

I hope the love comes back man. I bought a top loading NES just for the purposes of awesome games. All I can advise you to do is try to get some of the great classic games that have been seugested such as Metroid or Contra or Castlevania and so many others. I hope everything goes well man.

Oddly enough it seems like Punchout is more frequently referenced in casual conversation by very casual gamers. I'm always really surprised when I hear some random person compare a situation to a fight from Punchout

I collect Neo, SNES and Genesis games, but will always love the NES for the fun it gave me back in the days. The only games I still play are the Megaman series, DD and a couple of others. So just the best games ever made for it (imo)

8-bit was fantastic, but I kind of lost interest in those games as well. 16 bits consoles on the other hand will never bore me. Best 2d graphs and games ever made.

HOw strange, I was just playing Punch out on a NES emulator for the DC last nite.... Punchout is great, I love this game. But like many previous posters wrote, NES has its share of crap games and playing those aren't gonna change your mind. :)

Kirby's adventure is like the best nes game imho. Battletoads, double dragon and river city ransom are great too. RPGs on nes can be surprisingly good. Like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. The biggest drawback for me is not the graphics but the depth of play.

the nes is one of my favorite systems.
alot of great games that i play every
once in a while.
smb series is still great, i have all the
castlevanias and dw 1-3.
with plenty others i really like.
its a good system.
it shared its dull titles, but what system doesnt.
it kinda has an old nostagia charm for me.
but some of the games speaks for themselves too.
but whatever floats your boat man
